Some Election Monitors Pulling Out of Pakistan

December 28, 2007 6:26 PM

ABC News' Kirit Radia reports: The International Republic Institute is cancelling plans to send as many as 65 election monitors to observe Pakistan's parliamentary elections, scheduled for Jan. 8.

While they aren't the only organization scheduled to send monitors, one source says the EU is also currently reconsidering sending monitors as well.

According to sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because IRI does not plan on announcing the decision publicly, the decision was reached today, due in large part to the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto yesterday.

Other factors are said to be security concerns for monitors and IRI's ability "to observe in a credible way," given unspecified concerns about role of Pakistan's election commission.

IRI has informed the State Department about their decision, but a source says senior State Department officials are still unsure how to respond and whether the United States will urge IRI to reconsider.

Many pundits have urged Pakistan to reschedule elections given recent turmoil in the country, but the State Department has maintained that the decision is up to the Pakistanis and the United States will support their decision, even if it means a delay.

Pakistan president is going to remain in power or he is going to appoint his NUMBER 1 man. Either way there is no Political Freedom since the only female voice with the conviction to stand up against oppression has been silenced. Guess in the middle east and all across the world it will always be the good old boys club since women are willing to bash other women to satisfy their men.
But I will always continue to fight for the right to speak out because 'I am woman hear me roar in numbers too big to ignore and I know too much to go back and pretend.' Good luck in closing your eyes to the truth and continue with your bashing women for speaking out.

Hillary Clinton's remarks to the Pakistan government were wrong and
warmongering. She is a silly woman to
voice opinions that she knows nothing
about. It is obvious that she gave
little thought to her spew. We though
she had learned not to speak up unless
she had been cleared to do so.

Hillary does have a few good point but
her negatives greatly over-shadow them.
She should have been working to become
more honest with the American People
and instead she has become more beligerant in striving to be thought of
as an intellectual. She is certainly
"NOT" an intnellectual! She does not
have the capacity to understand that
there is more to being a president than
showing them "..how smart 'you' think
you are.."!
