Marty! We've Got to Go Back! Back to the Future!

January 26, 2007 12:16 PM

Forgive a dated joke, but if you remember the "Back to the Future" films, you'll get a kick out of this.

Remember the car Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) used for his time machine?  Even in 1985, when the original film came out, the DeLorean was a dated joke.

Here's a picture of John DeLorean and the dream car that Detroit hated, from 1982.

But there's still a DELOREAN.COM, based in Texas, for the few who still have the car, and the others who thought they were fun.

Now: Go to their ONLINE STORE.  Type in Doc Brown's key, er, "invention," the "flux capacitor."  See what happens.

Not only do they list the part, it's free! Although mine is not yet worn out, I may order one for a spare!

It's bice to see that someone at the company has a great sense of humor. And since we're speaking of interesting websites, does anyone know where I could order some parts to fix my Interocitor? (If it helps anyone, it's the basic model without Planetary Drive.)

I know what you're talking about, Chuck, but I can't remember the name of the company who sells them. I can look it up, probably, on a movie website for "This Island Earth."

Andy, thanks for the help. From what I understand, Exeter is testing me to see how fast I can repair the machine. (Maybe I should've ordered the deluxe version with Planetary Drive.)

Wow, Ned... Thanks for my second reminder to this movie today!

Has anyone else seen the commercial for a certain satellite TV company using a "Back to the Future" clip -- the one where Doc Brown just sent Marty (Michael J. Fox, pre-Alzheimer days) back to 1985 -- to tout how the company will have more high-def in the future because of two new satellites being launched into orbit?

DOC BROWN: "1.21 gigawatts!?!?!?! Great Scot!! 1.21 gigawatts!!!! 1.21 gigawatts!!!" (Runs out of the lab...)

MARTY: "Hey, Doc! Wait!!! What's a gigawatt?!?!?!?"

[Note to Marty: It's about how much energy we'll need to keep all the PCs in NYC running WIndows Vista without crashing! ;-)]

(Wow... DeLoreans, Michael J. Fox, Alzheimers, 1.21 gigawatts, HDTV, and space-based satellites all in one post.... "Science and Society" indeed!!!!)

Note to redtech5. If memory serves (no pun intended) I think MJFox has Parkinson's, not Alzheimer's.

And, yes, "Science and Society" is the name of the blog. I think Ned has done a grand job gathering up strange and satisfying stuff to set us at each other's throats. Ever been to a party where the invitees don't like each other? Now, *that's* interesting.

Note to Andy: Thanks for the correction. (My caffine hadn't fully kicked in at the time of my post.)
