Al Gore's Newest Friend

February 23, 2007 5:54 PM

An update to Thursday's post: Never mind using one ABC blog to cite another, but on Political Radar, George Stephanopoulos reports that he's done an interview with Jimmy Carter--who endorsed Gore in the 2008 race:
Carter
"If Al should decide to run -- which I'm afraid he won't -- I would support Al Gore."

The comments George's post drew suggest that with friends like these....

Gore has, in my presence, repeated the answer he always gives when asked about running again for President: "I can't imagine circumstances under which I'd run...I'd never say never because you learn not to do that in politics, but I'm not being coy...the atmosphere in politics has gotten to be toxic...."

Personally, I get the sense that Gore has enough that's going well for him--in the climate realm, in his business ventures, in books and speeches, and (dare we forget) "An Inconvenient Truth"--that me may feel he doesn't need the White House.  As the old joke goes, he couldn't handle the pay cut.

I fully agree with your assessment, Ned. With his prestige at a higher point than when he served as VP, Mr. Gore certainly has nothing to prove to himself or to anyone else. But if he ran in 2008, he'd be the person I'd vote for withut any misgivings!
