We're giving our web site a makeover, and we hope you like it. Aside from the new look, you'll find more video, more pictures, and--this is key--more ways for you to take part.
Click around. You'll see that a lot of things are layered. The top stories rotate on their own, or you can speed through them. Below that, on the Technology & Science page, are some categories we've set up for now (global warming, space, reviews and buying guides, Amanda Congdon's videoblog); click on the tabs. We're figuring this out as we go. If you tell us what interests you, we'll change things.
Look on the right side of any news story you open and you'll see a place for comments. We hope you'll weigh in, especially if a story launches new thoughts in your mind, or you have information you can add. This is not a gimmick. We'll read what you write, just as I read everything you post on this blog.
Which gives me a chance for a quick reminder of what I hope this particular page does. I do not intend this as an opinion blog--there are plenty of other places on the web for that--and I don't think of myself as some master of information, hurling thunderbolts of news from on high. Instead, I hope this will be a quick, informal way to pass on stories, and start a conversation on them. I'm glad to say the level of our conversation has been pretty high--people are not throwing insults at each other--and I've learned a great deal from the things many of you have posted.
Today, my main question is simply...what you think of our new page. Please, please, let us know.

I'm always ready for something new, but only time will tell. Kinda like a shakedown cruise for a new naval vessel. A few days motoring around at various speeds will pinpoint the loose nuts and bolts, if any. In any case, good luck in the new place.

Pure crap. Nothing that particularly distinguishes this site from its predecessor. And nobody with a life would really care anyway.
Why don't you guys concentrate on actually providing worthwhile content, instead of screwing around monkeying with your web page?

Wow! What a change! It was quite a shock when I clicked on the ABC News link. So far it looks good, I will just need to learn how to navigate the new site.

Well, I do like the home page. Nice color, etc. I did have to do some clicking to find this place.
One criticism: I think the "Fame and Shame" and "Scandalwatch" are a touch on the salacious side.
The rest will take a bit of getting used to. My first post came between the old home page and the new "Science and Society" page. So, that took some getting used to, also.
Anyway, onward, upward, excelsior.

It will take some getting used to. The main page is a little busy, and it's hard to find stories -- too much going on, I miss the simple list of headlines and links. I do like the new comments feature on news stories.
I also like that you've got your monthly archives up now (if they were there before, they were invisible).

I don't really like the new look of the website. While it is supposed to be better I find difficult to get the information I want; there is simply too much information on each page. Although I generally like change, this is not one of them. This will force me to go to other sites for my news, which are much easier to use.

Well, I'll agree with Andy, the whole scandalwatch and fametoshame is a bit much. Other than that, the site looks good, and will take some time for me to get used to. Keep it up.

I agree with the second poster...print news that we can use instead of pushing your agenda. Ever since the VT tragedy you guys have been pushing for more gun control, I've seen it in the evening news and on the Sunday morning debate shows...don't you guys get it...the public doens't need anymore laws and the Democrats won't touch it. So why do you keep pushing it? Its not a wonder that I spend more time watching the BBC news they the US media...they have something you guys don't....professionalism.

More places for readers to interact? Um, this is a news site, not myspace. I don't come here to interact, post gripes about current events, or anything of the sort. I come here to read news.
The new design makes that harder. I can no longer scan through the headlines in every category at once. I don't pay enough attention to some categories to feel the urge to click on them daily. Before, it was just scrolling down the page and scanning. Categories I was interested in, I could open up the separate page for, but I could at least glance at the other headlines for interesting topics.
No more! Oh, well, no more entertainment news for me. I'm probably better for it.
So, in summation, like the *look*, but hate the lack of overall headline page, and wouldn't give you a penny for "interaction".
And where's the math guy?

I like the more compact style of the home page--no more scrolling down to select a particular section. The tabs are a nice idea, although I had to do some searching since there's no heading for "Blogs" anymore. I also think the animations are most certainly eye-catching with broadband access, but I'll have to see how effective they are on my dial-up internet connection. The only problem I have is the unintended humor sometimes generated by the juxtapositions of the headlines and the feature stories: it's a bit jarring to see "Rachael Ray's Buffalo Chicken Filled Tortilla Cups" ("You'll say yum-o to these fantastic appetizers.") next to a headline like "Corruption Investigation Stonewalled --Is Iraqi Prime Minister Hiding Something?"

Hmmm... It is a STRIKING design change. But I agree with many others. The new design makes it harder to figure out at a glance what's actually worth reading. I'm also not a big fan of lots of animation and online video and Flash automation. (Yeah, it's great on my home broadband connection. But my network servers at work are trying to keep streaming videos in check to manage bandwidth issues.)
I'm also disappointed with the layout.
Let's see, the left-hand column of any particular news report is the story itself. then you have a whole middle section devoted to "interacting" with the story -- which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Do you really want folks to start adding their own two-bits to wire reports and your OWN reporting? Doesn't that just add yet more "noise?" Aren't YOU guys suppose to be the "professionals" in determining what's creditable fact in a news story? If I want to hear some Net surfer's take on global warming, "what we should do in Iraq," well... I might as well just go into that time suck known as "The Blog-o-sphere."
And lastly, there's the whole right-hand column devoted to ads. I know you guys got to pay the bills. But with many Web browsers, security software (McAfee, Norton, etc.) and other ways to "turn off" and filter online advertisement... Well... Just seems like a waste of space to make the ad area EVEN BIGGER!!! (And for now, not many of your "skyscrapper ads" fill the whole slot anyway.)
I'll give the new design a try for a while... Maybe I'll be able to adjust... and you guys will further tweak the design and layout. But right now, it's a bit of an antithesis of why I come to ABCNews.com -- to get the top news and headlines at a glance and then easily drill down to what interests me.

I really hate this line-up for ABC news. It is not really user friendly when you can't find what you really want to read. I HATE IT! Go back to the original one you started with!

Put another way, less ability to scan the bulk of new stories at once means I'll be clicking on fewer stories. Less clicking means fewer page hits. Fewer page hits means less money for ABC. Less money for ABC means the redesign is a bad idea, surely.
