Secrets of the Chinese Navy

July 09, 2007 4:28 PM

Jin_class_sub_070709_main The Chinese Jin-class submarine, spotted on Google Earth near the Chinese city of Dalian by Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists, continues to intrigue.  Thanks to all who weighed in.

One person, who gave his name as Steven Simpson, steered us to a website called Chinese Military Aviation--and to a picture there provided, not by a satellite on Google Earth, but by someone who shot it at ground level.  The image is HERE, and to a lay person's eyes it appears to be the same submarine.

In a paragraph on the Jin class sub, the site says:

"Type 094 (09IV, 8,000-9,000t dived) Jin class is the new generation of SSBN replacing the old Type 092. Its most leathal weapons are 16 JL-2 SLBMs (CSS-NX-4, 3 or 4 MIRVs at 90kT each or a single nuclear warheard, range 8,000km) which enable Type 094 to strike the west coast of United States from west Pacific near Chinese coast. Little information has been released for this highly classified project. However it is believe to be quieter and safer than its predecessor. Shown here is probably the first boat floating inside a naval sub base near Dalian. The photo indicates an enlarged design based on the Type 092 without drastic changes. Type 094 is expected to be escorted by the new Type 093 SSN during its combat mission patrolling in the West Pacific. The construction of the first Jin SSBN was believed to have started in 1999 and it was launched in July 2004 at Huludao Shipyard. A total number of 3-4 094s were projected."  The text and additional material is HERE.

(SSBN is a U.S. Navy classification for nuclear-powered subs carrying nuclear missiles--Ship Submersible, Ballistic missiles, Nuclear. And SLBM stands for Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile.)

Other media--REUTERS, for instance--have noticed the sub since we mentioned it on Thursday.  Reuters quotes Kristensen as saying it's no accident that the submarine was visible: "The fact that they have it and the fact that it moves around, I'm sure they want the world to know about it," he said.

I'm not at all concerned about China having a nuke sub. I'd find it hard to believe that they would ever be willing to attack us right now. Especially since a majority of our goods are made in China. And besides, why is it that we, the US, can have nuke subs, and missiles without anyone telling us to get rid of them, when we tell everyone else they can't have them. Even more so since we are the ONLY country to ever use them in combat. Kind of hypocritical if you ask me. Good for the Chinese.

Why would a country that sells us billions in goods want to bomb us. We don`t want to bomb them. They should thank us, or do they have something else in mind like Pacific Hegemony without any interference from the U.S.

"I'd find it hard to believe that they would ever be willing to attack us right now."

At the moment they won't attack us. But, when the chips are down remember that a gov't that is willing to shoot its own people who are simply asking for more freedoms would even blink an eye about nuking us.

No one is going to Nuke anyone except the crazy Administration we have now. Go Hillary!!

It would appear that a lot of folks on the postings above wish to bury their heads in the sand and take and 1800's isolationist policy to believe that if we ignore all the evils of the world they will allow the US to just go our merry way and live long peaceful lives!! NOT REAL WORLD PHILOSOPHY

The ground level pick that you received of the jin class sub and the satellite image of the jin class sub that is real on google earth are two completely different places. I do not know if the ground level one you received is even the new jin class.

At this time China's leadership knows
better than to attack us with nuclear weapons. They would be toast if they wen there.

A bigger problem is OBL. He would and will attacks with nuclear weapons if he gets the chance.I think the area he lives will be vaporized, but he does not care at all

it's a guarantee if we default on the bonds when china wants to cash them in

Posted by: Alex | Jul 9, 2007 10:37:38 PM

Yay!? The Americans have nuke subs but the Chinese can't? Lol.. Thats sounds kind of stupid. Americans like to stick there big fat noses in everyones business. Hopefully someone will put these people on a Weight Loss program and teach them a lesson

Posted by: Blank | Jul 9, 2007 11:01:52 PM

I agree, we Americans DO need to go on a weight loss program. We are a VERY unhealthy nation. But I still don't think the Chinese would attack us. What would they gain? There's no motive. And to those who think my words are treasonous, think again. I served my nation, proudly, and still consider myself a soldier who will still give my life to protect the freedoms all of us hold so dear. We need China just as much as they need us. Our economies depend on such bonds, attacking us would break that bond, and crush us both. They wont do it.

ummmm any of you lazy boy/sofa lounger political/military experts ever read any books ( i mean specifically about things political/military?) or newspapers articles?i mean other than the national enquirer?

anywho, while you all are doing all your googleing why dont you also type in "mutually assured destruction"?btw, fyi, its the base principal and nexus of our (and most of the other nuclear arms capable nations') overall national defense scheme since about 1962. (also of note, china has had nuke capable subs for quite some time now.)

sigh...

The lib on here are typical. They would never imagine that an accidental launch could happen from the reds, they have not perfected the technology they stole from the U.S. quite yet. One rogue commander decides to fire and it's all over. The lefties would go, well, they deserved to have them too! The more who have them the higher the odds of accidents and launches on purpose, the U.S. has a track record of being responsible... get a clue, gawd I hate snivelling libs who are also for amnesty.

I think this is one of those "secrets" which China wants the whole world to know about. The development and the successful launch of the Jin-class nuclear submarine shows the technological and military potential of this up-and-coming industrializing nation.

Posted by: chuck | Jul 10, 2007 8:21:58 AM

America has a 'no first strike' nuke policy unless the survival of the homeland is at risk. The Russians, French and UK, the other three nations operating SSBNs, have the same 'no first strike' policy in effect. China hasn't advertised nor sought recognition for a 'no first strike' policy. One can speculate as to why, but one could assume that China feels that it's strategic objective would be limited by agreeing to such a policy. For instance, all know that Chinese industrialization is requiring more oil and gas. If China decides to claim the S. China Sea oil fields, or invade the "renegade province" of Taiwan, they want everyone to know that they now have the ability to act locally plus interdict globally against any potential nay sayers (US) to such actions. The sub photo(s) on this blog are nothing short of a 'coming-out' announcement to the traditional superpowers for China. They wnt the world to officially know that they have a 'blue water' navy capable of world-wide nuclear strike operations. So cheer for the Chinese if you wish, but the world suddenly became a much more dangerous place!

Oh my goodness! how dare those chinese follow our example? *cue the right-wing fit of rage with massive racist undertones and hypocritical narcissism*

The chinese and american economies depend on each other to survive, obviously. But if I were Chinese, just trying to survive in a globally competitive world that capitalism created, i would be afraid of america's xenophobic, gun-toting tantrums too. And sure, maybe a little military clout might ease the collective fear of the American Bludgeon of Self Righteousness. But as soon as anyone starts showing a little progress, our bored conservatives immediately wet their pants.

This was what America wanted wasnt it? Freedom and competition?

(not unless you're a crybaby with a suspicious supply of weapons and ammo in your house)

Yes however, one day we make wake up and hear the news say that China has sent 6 carrier task forces to the gulf. Also China is sweeping thru Afganastan to stablize the region. They plant their flag in the middle east and we will send a strongly worded letter to the u.n. voicing our displeasure.
