Google Earth Shows More Chinese Submarines

October 15, 2007 4:40 PM

Jinclass_subs_oct_2007 Back in July, Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists created something of a stir when he reported the sighting of a new Chinese nuclear-missile submarine, known as a Jin-class SSBN (Type 094).

Now he writes, China has at least two, and perhaps three

How does he illustrate this?  From spy satellites or by going into restricted territory (as others have done)?  No, you can see them by poking around Google Maps.  The location is HERE.

We had posts about this back in July.  You can find them, with background information, HERE and HERE.  The first sighting was made at a bse called Xiaopingdao.  This newer one, he says, is at a shipyard at the city of Huludao, about 400 km (or 250 miles) east of Beijing.

"Whether China has now launched two or three Jin-class SSBNs is still unclear," writes Kristensen. "The image of the first SSBN discovered at Xiaopingdao in July 2007 was taken on October 17, 2006. The new image of the two SSBNs at Huludao was taken six and a half months later on May 3, 2007. One possibility is that the Xiaopingdao SSBN returned to Huludao for repair or further adjustment and was captured on the 2007 photo together with the second SSBN. Another possibility is that the two Huludao SSBNs are indeed the second and third boats of the new Jin-class SSBN."

The Chinese Navy has not, as best we can tell, announced anything about its submarines.  But it's also not hiding them.

It's pathetic that the CIA has to learn things like this this way.

Umm, the story does not indicate at all that US intelligence did not know about these weapons...

Posted by: Jazz | Oct 15, 2007 5:52:51 PM

Jamie, That's because the CIA probably now needs to ask Congress if the can use Google. It might just violate the civil rights of our enemies and Ted Kennedy and Reid and Durbin and Schummer won't like that. Also the ACLU might sue.

So let's allow them MORE importing to help fund their weapons...HELLO!

They are sneaky little trolls...remember Vietnam?

Our government is SO stupid to trust these ppl!

Even more worrisome to me than the new Chinese nuclear subs is the amount of our debt the Chinese government is buying. At the rate we are borrowing money to run our government, and the rste Chinese are financing us, we should all be afraid of China's ability to cripple our economy.

At least they didn't invade a country killing over 100,000 innocent people for oil. Why would people be surprised that they are investing in their military with all the money they are getting from us. To be a dominate force on the global stage you need to strike fear in other countries. That's what the Americans do.

A pyrrhic victory for the Chinese. They'd gain only an economy in ruins, a crumbling infrastructure, a health care system second only to Darfur's and a really PO'd population. I wonder if they'd really want to set foot here.

As the beloved Molly Ivins once observed, "there's not a battle tank in any army that could stand up to 10 heavily armed rednecks in a Cadillac convertible."

Down with W, wow, you are extremely short sighted and have zero history experience as well as factural experience. These boats are SSBN's and the Chinese have very little compuction about using them. As far as intellegence goes, we probably have the full plans on them. The Chinese probably copied them fromt he Russians and or bought a boat and reversed engineered it. In my opinion... substandard, still deadly, but not really that quiet.

We can still defeat anything they have.

old, and dumb story, moving on...

These subs are props for a Chinese propaganda film called 'Nuclear Attack for Militant Revolution of Peace' - (losely translated). You'll notiec there appears to be a missile loading hatch open on the upper sub. This hatch, which is clearly where the ICBMs would be located is, in fact, far too large. This is where equipment is stored overnight, as theft of movie equipment has become a bit of a problem lately. The film is already grossly over-budget, and it remains doubtful if both ships will be used in the climactic end-sequence, where they collide into each other and create a time vortex after detonating all their missiles simultaneously. This of course being the only method to produce a sequel, 'Nuclear Annihilation to the Future'.

What makes you think the CIA didn't already know about these? Do you think knowing about them is going to get China to stop making them? I don't think so...

China owns us and there isn't anything we can do. It's funny how we brand all these countries we do not like as evil or terrorist sympathizers but we embrace China like a sibling. Does anyone remember that ground unarmed students into paste with tanks??

Posted by: brent | Oct 15, 2007 10:48:39 PM

There is a strong chance that the Chinese military owns Cosco, so, all you people who purchase cheap Chinese goods from Cosco and elsewhere are probably financing the construction of those subs that will one day be used to hit us with nuclear tipped ICBMs. Is cheap really worth the chance of financing our own incineration?

Posted by: SunnyOne934 | Oct 15, 2007 11:07:32 PM

SunnyOne934, COSCO is a Chinese shipping/logistics company owned by the Chines government. Not to be confused with COSTCO (notice the T) which sells wholesale goods unlike the Chinese crap like Walmart sells.

COSCO does not have any retail presence. They are one of the many shipping/logistic companies that COSTCO and many other companie use though.

I wonder what kind of paint they used when they painted these subs.If the subs are anything like the stuff they sell to walmart then I wouldn't worry to much.

We have tarifs on Cambodian clothing imports, a democracy, and none on China, a totalitarian government. This is after we set up Cambodia to be a model of fair labor in Asia as opposed to China.

Posted by: Swamp | Oct 16, 2007 2:45:48 AM

One of the reasons we can rant about this is thanks to the ACLU's relentless protection of the Bill of Rights, something alot of Chinese people wish they had.

You people are all idiots, liberals and conservatives alike...Bush is a fool, and everyone who doesn't support him has no backbone. I'm pretty sure the American economy is going to implode before a missile over DC from a Chinese sub does. You people love to deal and embrace fear-mongering. How about our government invests in a domestic policy other than "Let's bomb Iraq", and how about we the people stand up. This Republican and Democrat model is ridiculous...neither side has an ideals or standards anymore.

Posted by: Pete Rock | Oct 16, 2007 2:51:21 PM

We can all thank "slick-willy" for approving China as a most favored nation regarding international trade. We can see the results of this in the satellite photos. You lazy, gutless, liberals blame George Bush for all you do not approve of. Invade a friendly country and kill 100,000 people for oil? Remember the more than three thousand people killed on 9/11. This is less people killed than at Pearl Harbor! We solved the problem we had with Japan with a couple of well directed nukes and got "pay-back" for this dastardly act.
