Where the Oil Is

July 23, 2008 3:29 PM

Arctic_oil_rig_080723_main The U.S. Geological Survey has taken a look around the part of the world north of the Arctic Circle, and in a new estimate, out today, it says there are probably "90 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil, 1,670 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas, and 44 million barrels of technically recoverable natural gas liquids in 25 geologically defined areas thought to have potential for petroleum."

What do those numbers mean?  The USGS says it could be 22 percent of the undiscovered petroleum on the planet -- 13 percent of the oil and 30 percent of the natural gas.  There's a fact sheet HERE, and more at the USGS Arctic Assessment site HERE.  They'll give more of an idea of how the estimate was made.

84 percent of what could be drilled is probably offshore, says the report.  That makes it harder and more expensive to reach -- but if indeed more of the Arctic Ocean is more ice-free in summer than it used to be, there are fewer complications than there used to be.  (See last year's report from the National Snow and Ice Data Center; it's HERE.)

One more bit of fodder, perhaps, for the debate about powering the economy in the future.  But while 90 billion barrels sound like a lot, the USGS says that's the equivalent of the world's demand for about three years.

Do both! Drill and Develop. Be careful though. If this story gets out the price of oil will go down for sure.

Why don't we just learn to not rape the earth...who cares about the "undiscovered" oil...we need to quit being natural resource hogs!!

There is no "one" answer to our energy problems. We so desparately need new sources of power and we need current sources of power to get us there.

Everyone screams Yes but did they read the last sentence? "But while 90 billion barrels sound like a lot, the USGS says that's the equivalent of the world's demand for about three years." Yeah, that will fix everything!

The joke is on the ones who believe tdrilling off shore or in protected areas will bring down the price of oil. Oil goes on the WORLD market, not the LOCAL market! If the middle east wants to control the price, all they have to do is cut production to offset the increase. Wake up people. They WANT the oil prices to be this high, it's windfall time again. In Texas, at $30 a barrel, it's not worth getting out of the ground, but at $130, they want all they can get. Those old idle wells are pumping again. If you want to see what drilling will do to the environment, just take a little drive out to the Midland Odessa area...aka Bush Country, and you'll see the "footprints" it's called JUNK! And lots of it! We need renewable energies, not oil!

It's not worth it for 3 years or so.

To HECK with Renewable, go Wind and Solar for CLEAN Dammit!

Posted by: Patrick | Jul 23, 2008 6:58:11 PM

Everybody's talkin

Talk talk talk, Gore, Boone, Branson, the EPA, Senators, you, and me, every one talks about the problems. But little or no action is going on. Bush says the US wont do anything til he is gone. I see all the stars talking, but lip service oesn't make change happen. While alot of people talk about the problems, I see very few bold enough to take action. Boone, for instance: Wind and solar are very acceptable, but the notion of compressed fuel tanks in vehicles is not a real good idea to me. Do we really want to manufacture or alter a vehicle that can explode. Too much liability. One major wreck with a chain reaction explosion. And while you keep talking, these problem are getting worse. Carbon emissions and high fuel costs.

So, I am here to propose a solution. Efficiency and cleaner emissions.

Microwave Plasma can be used to ionize earths atmosphere into Nitrous Oxide and Ozone. Pollution compounds in the atmosphere are broke down to their elements, and solids such as carbon fall out. The Nitrous Oxide and Ozone can be used anywhere fuels are combusted. Exhaust gases can be recycled for reuse. The Coal and Automotive industries emit the most, so we will start with them first.

We can have commercial models this year. We are selling stock, looking for partners and a Power CEO. PurePowerCorp.com

You can stand around and talk til you are blue in the face, it is time for action.

Put your money where your mouth is. I have put myself on the line. We all have contributed to the problem. Who is willing to stand up with me.

Wow...this is staggering information...

(quote)while 90 billion barrels sound like a lot, the USGS says that's the equivalent of the world's demand for about three years....(end quote)

I will accept that as fact... but further up in article is what is truly mind boggling...

(quote)The USGS says it could be 22 percent of the undiscovered petroleum on the planet -- 13 percent of the oil (end quote)

You do the math... if 90 Billion barrels is equal to 3 year world supply AND the undiscovered oil is 13 percent of the oil on earth ... that means "we" run out in 8 years !

That doesn't bode well for OUR generation....

Great, another reason to go to war. Who owns the Arctic? Hope it's not the Native Indians or palestinians, they already have had land stolen.

So...

The next war will be fought over who own the rights to get the stuff if its there!

We never learn. In the 70's, we went through an gas crisis and vowed to develop alternative fuel sources. Earlier this year, we made the same promise to ourselves. But, now we are spending vast resources to find and develop new oil fields. We never learn.

Posted by: Beto | Jul 23, 2008 7:12:22 PM

SO WHAT!!! LEAVE IT THERE. We have the technology for cleaner more efficient energy. Let's stop the madness and start using solar, wind and the myriad of other sources of energy....BECAUSE WE NEED TO BREATHE AND THE EARTH NEEDS A BREAK!!

Posted by: dee white | Jul 23, 2008 7:12:51 PM

See? Global warming makes drilling easier because there is less ice to drill through. So, if we burn more fossil fuel and cause more global warming, it will be easier for us to get to the fossil fuel so that we can burn more.

Until we run out, of course.

Posted by: incog-nito | Jul 23, 2008 7:16:13 PM

Like any other so called crisis it's all about the money. They want access to that oil and they will run gas prices to whatever it takes. Congress will fold because their lining their pockets with oil money.

Posted by: paranoid1 | Jul 23, 2008 7:27:27 PM

wow well if this is really there and bush didnt get the reporters to just say so then i tk we need to forget about it and go for solar and wind cuz if we drill there well were screwed and congress gets TONS of $ from oil companys so if mccain gets elected thats where shell and exxon will be on january 21 2009

Maybe this explains why Russia put a Russian flag under the polar cap so they can claim sovereignity over the possible oil site? If not, maybe Canada can lay claim to the territory!

Posted by: Thomas Gunn | Jul 23, 2008 7:37:13 PM

o and incog-nito, love ur idea except for the insane repercussions; extreme weather (hurricanes, tsunamis, ext) and well many many other things which will pretty much scr3w the nxt generation of humans

Posted by: eco_dude | Jul 23, 2008 7:39:27 PM

Since so many seem to have been living under a rock, let me point out that the Russians have already literally dropped their flag from a submarine on a ridge under the north pole considered a key area - they are claiming the ridge is connected to and part of their outer shelf and thus Russian property.

We will never completely get off oil. Too many uses besides gas for your SUV. We should drill and ramp up production of alternative energies. Treehuggers should put their money where there mouth is and make serious pushes for alternative energies. We've been hearing 'alternative energies' for over 30 years. It's time to put up or shut up, treehuggers.
