‘Green’ Bible Stirs Controversy Among Evangelicals
December 31, 2008 10:05 AM
ABC News' Ki Mae Heussner reports:
The Bible has gone green. But some in the evangelical community object to spreading the “good news” through an eco-friendly Good Book.
Released by HarperCollins Publishers this fall, the Green Bible emphasizes environmental messages laced throughout the pages (the book's Web site says it includes 1,000 references to Earth in the Bible, compared to 490 to Heaven and 530 to love). In addition to highlighting Earth-related passages in light green, the book is printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink.
Supporters of the new book, including those in the creation care movement who believe that their biblical faith is crucial to solving ecological problems, hope it will encourage others to take environmental action.
"In every book of the Bible, there are references to the world and how we should take care of it," Rusty Pritchard, editor of the eco-friendly evangelical publication Creation Care Magazine, told the Arizona Republic newspaper. "When you look at it through that lens, it really jumps out at you … that God is calling us to care for the world around us."
But some evangelical Christians argue that the new Bible distorts and cheapens the meaning of the scripture.
“As an evangelical Christian, it’s my belief and the belief of many people like me that the central message of the Christian Bible is the redemption of fallen man through Jesus Christ, not the redemption of the polluted Earth through creation care advocates,” James M. Taylor, a founding elder and Sunday school teacher at Living Water Christian Fellowship in Palmetto, Fla., told ABCNews.com.
Taylor is also a senior fellow of environmental policy at the Heartland Institute, a conservative Chicago-based think tank, but he said he was speaking for himself and not his organization.
But it’s not just the Green Bible that some evangelicals contest. It’s the greater creation care movement that stakes positions on the environment – particularly global warming – that mainstream evangelicals say the Bible is largely silent on.
Some recent surveys and initiatives between evangelicals and the scientific community have suggested that more members of the community are retreating from their skeptical stance on global warming.
But mainstream evangelicals say that those members are in the minority, pointing to the National Association of Evangelicals’ assertion that it does not have a specific position on global warming.
“When we interject religion into environmental debates, we are taking the focus of the church away from God and, instead, placing it on a hotly disputed social values issue,” Taylor said.
Still, the Green Bible has received a significant amount of praise from those within and outside the evangelical community.
The new Bible includes a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and has been endorsed by the Sierra Club, the Humane Society and the Eco-Justice Program of the National Council of Churches USA.
More than 37,000 copies have been printed and the first 25,000 sold out within just a few weeks, according to the Arizona Republic.

"you will find that good, solid, science points much more heavily to global warming being an even caused by human activity rather than 'a warming cycle."
Here is a good, solid example of the paranoid attempt to constantly prove fraudulent science. I would add, all for the sake of convenience.

Some people will complain just to complain and this what is going on. Anyways when god made the earth he said that is was good, and if you tarnish anything that god has made then that is a trespass against God its pretty simple.

Calis - If you knew the bible then you would know how strongly God feels about the earth that He made & loves & how He feels about mistreating it, which is to me this green thinking so many are concerned about....My pastor does not dictate to us on what to think. Never has he told us what to do. He strongly tells us to read the Word, investigate & test the Lord & pray.
I do thank you for the advise though & hope you have a blessed New Year.

How dare someone NOT think as the evangelicals tell them too.

Why would the bible even account for global warming. That is a science issue not a religious issue. I wonder how the bible would explain solar expansion and the future (yes a few billion years) destruction of the earth.

"I love how people can have a "position" on global warming."
Al Gore profited 100s of millions and attracted a multitude of insane on just that position.
Do you love him?

Syn - No God said to take care of the world he created for us. Obviously you are one of the scientific elite. Geeae. Have you ever been in an incrediably beautiful place. If you have been thank God , he made it for you and for me to enjoy and take care of.

*****
The bible itself is a distortion, written and edited by man through the ages to fit the christian agenda of the moment. Who are these people kidding with this holier than thou crap? I agree with the earlier poster, Evangelicals just go away!

"No God said to take care of the world he created for us."
I believe God said to be good stewards of the land not paranoid spastics who believe they can control the weather.
As I understand it, God would say that worshiping Gaia is worshiping a false God. Of course, God gave you free will to choose between worshiping God or worshiping the false God Gaia; that's entirely up to you which God you choose to worship.

Did I read right - Evangelicals are looking for something in the Bible about Global Warming - and not finding it. That's possibly the most stupid thing I have ever heard. Tell me, does it talk about the earth having over 6B people with cars and factories polluting the air and the water? Just a hint - the Old Testament was written thousands of years ago during barbaric times and the New Testament we believe was written around 2000 years ago. I doubt very much if there is a "Thou shalt not Globally Warm" passage. Maybe you should just check with Nostradamas going forward. Evangelical beliefs grow more absurd and irrelevant with every day that passes.

Hey Christians, I think you could make good on this. Why not demand, that the greenie's get greener. Tell them to save the planet by turning off their TV's, require them to not fly at all. Take out their computers for their homes. and not be premitted to buy a laptop. They cannot own a yard blower, have to use a rake. And demand that they use a bicycle for travel. Not allowed to buy a DVD, or own an MP3 player. etc, etc. Ought to be fun.

What insanity, yet it's okay to pull two references from the Book to condemn homosexuality? You cannot have it both ways, the Bible is God's word whether you heed it or not. Many will cite passages pertaining to an issue or point they feel strongly about.
“As an evangelical Christian, it’s my belief and the belief of many people like me that the central message of the Christian Bible is the redemption of fallen man through Jesus Christ, not the redemption of the polluted Earth through creation care advocates,” James M. Taylor, a founding elder and Sunday school teacher at Living Water Christian
Why do some Christians only read the New Testament? The Old Testament is historical and provides the basic laws, Ten Commandments. The New Testament is not just Jesus dying for our sins, it's his teachings. He taught people how to live, forgive, be charitable etc. To sum it up as just a Book of redemption is very simplistic and ignorant.

"Scientist don't play politics, idiots play politics with science."
Really? If Scientists aren't playing politics why then are they so eager to have the Great and Awesome United Nations fund their fraudulent research?
And since 'idiots play politics with science' how come Al Gore received a Nobel Peace Prize and a Hollywood Oscar for his work in Global Warming oops.. it's been changed to Climate Change fraud?
Listen, if you wish to dwell in irrational emotionalism and all the insanity it brings that's not my problem. All I ask is that you do not force your tyrannical Luddite laws upon my freedom.

This is crazy. More loons to make our country great I suppose.

i hope you find freedom from religion and the peace that comes from being free of religious racism, tribalism, dogma, and terror. >>> if your god is omnipotent and omniscient why would it need the crude technology of a book to communicate? if you are made in the image of your god . . . well, you must have a pretty incompetent god - look at you - wasting time debating a fairy tale book when so many children and others are suffering around the world. oh, but the suffering of others is irrelevant as long as you profess your dogma and get your place in your imaginary heaven. you have the same priorities as every jihadist. if you believe really hard and sincerely, does it make leprechauns real? >>>imagine no religion. it's easy if you try. >> please do not enable in the lies and propaganda of the high priest politicians and theocons: you can be free; the world will be a better, greener place.

Now there is something I can read! The book will inspire me to focus on Gods creation rather than his Only Begotten Son, then I can use the pages as a replacement for toilet paper to send down the sewer to pollute it when I'm done reading a page as I sit on the pot.

“When we interject religion into environmental debates, we are taking the focus of the church away from God and, instead, placing it on a hotly disputed social values issue,” Taylor said.".............. O.K.....Um, haven't they been REALLY into "social values" for the last several years? Abortion, gay bashing, etc. It seems to me the evangelicans should respect the fact God created the earth more and as a tribute to him they would wish to see that his creation isn't harmed.

"insulated yourself with your beliefs"
If being insulated by reason rather than irrational emotionalism is my belief then I shall take living in my world over an irrational world any day.
Indeed, thankfully we are free to disagree.

I wonder if they highlighted the part where God says this earth is parishing and there will be none to help.
"Global Warming" is an understatement compared to what is going to happen.

They forgot to mention and highlight Gods take on Global Warming. When he returns he will burn it the whole Earth.
