Quickly, Before We Leave....
December 12, 2008 6:04 PM
Every administration, on its way out the door, leaves with a flurry of actions that it couldn't do before, or wouldn't do because of the likely backlash. Remember Bill Clinton's pardon of the financier Marc Rich? Jimmy Carter's White House famously got busy with new rules before handing off to Ronald Reagan.
Depending on your point of view, a "midnight regulation" is not necessarily dastardly, just not something the incoming administration might like. Emma Schwartz wrote a piece for us back in October on what the Bush Administration might have in mind; take a look HERE.
Yesterday the Interior Department came forth on the Endangered Species Act. "Interior Publishes Final Narrow Changes to Regulations," it said in its release. "Bush Administration Undermines Endangered Species Protections," replied the Endangered Species Coalition. (The AP's version of what happened is HERE; Dina Cappiello writes that the new rules are meant to "reduce the input of federal scientists and to block the law from being used to fight global warming.")
There will presumably be more between now and Jan. 20. Couldn't help noticing this bulletin late today; the Sierra Club did:
BC-APNewsAlert
WASHINGTON (AP) -- EPA exempts farms from reporting hazardous gas releases from manure in last-minute rulemaking.
Here's to a good weekend.

Does this man not have a soul? I've stood up for President Bush for years against so-called Bush bashing. I know regret every single time that I have stood up for the man. It's one thing to have a different point of view. In this case, he's just being plain evil.

Eric, it is a pity that it took you so long to see the truth...

I can't wait until Bush is out of the White House and Barack is in, so that he can repair all the damage done by Bush and the Republicans. America, are you better-off now than you were 8 years ago???

He is still president. Let him enjoy his full term. He won fair and square regardless of how anyone feels about his policies. What's a few more weeks anyway. His salute to his father was admirable and moving. He is indeed lucky to have a great family. Gob bless Mr. Bush. Wish you the best in the future. What is done is done and we all must look forward.

Funny. Lately I've read conservatives whine about corrupt Chicago politics. The Second City has nothing on Texas. I know, you think this is Bush bashing. Go back to LBJ and ballot box 13. Corruption has a long tradition in Texas. Republicans love to use Rove's tactics to marginalize their critics. Once Bush had 80% approval. It's 23% today. Most "Bush bashers" once liked Bush. Bush is like a cockapoo. You really want to like him. He always wets on the carpet, floor and you.

This man is an oil man and all he cares about is money no matter who or what is in his way and that is a fact.
I can't stand him and never could ever he is thief and a liar like all the rest. Texas hated him for what he did there. While he was there their taxes went out of sight. He bankrupted one of their savings and loans and so much more that is why I never voted for him and I mean both times.

Zorra, Why would God bless a man who is systematically permitting the annihilation of the planet. I just don't think that would make him happy. And as for his speech today, did you also hear the cheers when he said this was the last year of his Presidency??? Looked a little shocked, didn't he???

Bush and Cheney have hated the country's environmental protection policies all these years. Now they are wasting no time harming as much as possible for the benefit of a few rich and powerful that these changes will benefit. No, Bush has no shame. He has not been a president for the people of this country. He has been the president for corporate interests, lobbyists and the chosen few greedy corrupt people who will profit.

Regarding his speech, I think it's a bit scary how gushing (to the extreme) he is about his father on this and many other occasions. It does make one wonder about the theory that Sadaam's removal was simply Dubyah's revenge against his father's assassination attempt. Who knows? Dubyah does seem like the kind of simple-minded dude that would do something like that.

Instead of HATING on Bush get your facts straight, and stop being crazy.
Posted by: jon | Dec 12, 2008 8:49:37 PM
What facts aren't straight, Jon? Bush made his own bed.

lets see... liberals were right about the environment, right about george bush being incompetent, right about religious fundamentalists, right about the demise of capitalism... hmmm... something to think about while george bush does his last minute dastardly bullying against humanity and the planet

Every single independent media count of the votes in Florida in the 2000 election, no matter which way they counted them, showed that Bush won the majority. I challenge "Dr. truth" to show a link to even one count of the vote by a non-partisan/non-biased organization that showed Bush lost the popular vote in Florida. He can't and won't.
But do not simply take my word for it, or the word of "Dr. Truth"...research it for yourself.

To Don,
I work in the pulp/paper industry and I can say that only by practicing sustainable logging practices can we hope to achieve long term access to the resources we need.
I believe Species extinction is a natural part of evolution and I don't care a bit about the plight of the spotted owl. But its endangerment is a symptom of the real disease— an Industrial Age approach to harvesting of natural resources predicated on the obsolescent belief that supply is unlimited.
The answer is that there must be careful coordination and regulation of industries dealing in natural resources, and unfortunately for those like myself who believe in minimal government intervention, this can only be ensured through legislation.
The practice of spending your resources faster than you can replenish them works no better in the context of natural resources than it does in managing your personal finances, or as the Bush administration has proven tragically, managing your government's finances.

Bush has no pride, no soul, no sense of stewardship. Not only that, he doesn't care that his name will be smeared and his legacy tarnished. He is a truly appalling person and I wish this country had never had to endure his blundering. Even after eight years, he is still creating havoc. Bush is totally despicable.

All that we ask is that you give President Obama the same respect that we've given President Bush.
