How Britney Worked 'Your Mother'
March 24, 2008 11:18 PM
It was a Britney Spears we haven't seen in a long time. A Britney who reminded us of the sweet southern girl who came to Hollywood to make it big. A Britney who's been overshadowed by a club-hopping, kid-ditching, hysterically-crying alter ego. A Britney who ...
Fine, enough with the hyperbole. It was a Britney who remembered her lines, enunciated her words, and looked like she'd bathed and brushed her hair that morning. But considering the bulk of her performances in the past year and a half, her guest appearance as a secretary on Monday's "How I Met Your Mother" deserved a standing ovation.
The British accent recently adopted to address the paparazzi? Gone! The raggedy, dark hair extensions? Replaced by natural-looking blonde ones. The glazed-over eyes and aloof expression? Transformed into a bright, sunny disposition.
The guest spot was brokered earlier this month by her agent and producers of the CBS sitcom -- one source told TMZ.com that Britney's agent and father saw it as "a small legitimate project that will keep her busy doing something."
Her role was of little consequence to the plot -- she played Abby, a slightly inept dermatologist's secretary enamored with Ted (actor Josh Radnor). She flirted shamlessly from behind her desk, admired his moustache, and compared him to Tom Selleck.
But the gig was a huge boon to Britney's career. Her last TV appearance, flailing her limbs while attempting to lip synch "Gimme More" at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, was widely regarded as a train wreck.
Her competent on-air skills could be a reflection of her off-camera life: after two stints in a psych ward and weeks of separation, she was finally, last month able to visit her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, currently in the custody of ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Talking to reporters last week after filming the episode, "How I Met Your Mother" co-star Alyson Hannigan said she hopes Britney's performance will make people remember that the pop star can do more than sell tabloids and cause traffic jams.
"I think it will remind people of how talented she is in comedy as well," Hannigan said. "She's just normal."
VOTE: Is Britney destined to be a sitcom star or a TV train wreck?

Gotta crawl before you can walk.I am not a fan of hers at all,and I dont watch sitcoms so I only know what I read in the rags.It seems her dad is trying to help a daughter her dropped the ball on and she is trying to starighten herself out. I wish them both continues luck. Some of you people need to realx a bit.

I watched it. It was a small part which is good. With only a ninth grade education, I worried that she wouldn't be able to read her lines. Sarah Chalke was as ever, beautiful, articulate and professional. Britney was cute. She does that well.

I watched it. I watched some of this show last year, and started watching it again. I thought for the part she played, it was perfect. Funny how we comment about a CBS program on ABC website.

I am happy for Britney. The poor girl might have made pretty big mistakes, but give the girl a break! Finally she has one. I hope that this is a sign that she's turning her life around.

Everyone makes mistakes... and I am happy that she is trying to set things straight.
Good luck Britney! :-)

I actually walked into the room during her spot on the show and I was amazed how much better she looked and sounded. I just hope that pig of a so-called friend is forced to stay away from her. Why should he be fighting in court to have contact if he is not a relative? He just wants to get into her good graces so he can poison her with drugs again.

I think Britney looked well and was funny. Britney was never one of my favorite people, but the hard times she has been experiencing is sad and I think we should just hope that she gets well enough to be a mother. Unfortunately, this is the result of too much at too young an age.

Who cares!!!!!!!!!! Can't you all report on anything else. When will we as a society grow up??!

I happen to watch "How I Met Your Mother" and I thought(even though it was a small part) that Brittney did a good job. For everyone else out there how would you like it if everywhere you turned you had people snooping in your business. Yes she has made mistakes but give her some credit for trying to fix things and be a better person if not for herself than for her kids!

I dont usually watch sit coms but put that on my dvr nott miss it, I am glad she is getting to see her kids Fed man has two by an african american and two by Brit, so hes trying to milk her for all he can to pay his other child support, if he had went in to get Jayden instead of sending a body guard all that probably could have been spare, I thought she did a great job and hope to see some serious parts.

Sharon K: If you had read ANYTHING about her in the past few weeks you would know that she has seen her sons multiple times now...

I saw the episode and without paying too much attention I saw an pretty young actress do a fine job on a minor role. Both interesting and sad to find out it is Britney Spears -- for better or worse that will color future appearances. Who knows - maybe this will be the start of her transition to a bona fide acting career?

Did Heidi and Tiger "straighten" her out? Clue: Check her golf game.

Go Britney! Noone ever really reads these comments, but what the heck. She did a good job. People seem to forget that she's normal too. What if this out of control girl we've seen in past months was your daughter, niece or sister? Then, would you be so quick to write bad things on a website? Time to think before you speak & relax.

i wish brit the best and i am not going to be one to diss her BUT how in this world can a parent allow their child to have a ninth grade education - no amount of material 'success' will compensate for such a level of intellectual ignorance -
