Is 'Juno' Star Ellen Page Gay?
March 03, 2008 11:57 AM
Petite brunette loves Melissa Etheridge, the Indigo Girls, Ellen DeGeneres, and most other women: How could she not be a lesbian?
That's the question floating around the Web after the latest episode of "Saturday Night Live" in which Ellen Page played a "straight" girl who gushes about the awesome time she had at a Melissa Etheridge show.
Raving about the experience to her boyfriend, who questions whether she went "gay at that concert," Page's character Marty says, "Why does everything have to have a frickin' label? Why can't I just hug a woman with my legs in friendship?"
The sketch ends with a hug and the boyfriend, played by Andy Samberg, promising to "go gay too" if it turns out Marty's "a real lez."
Maybe Page, the 21-year-old Oscar-nominated star of "Juno," used the sketch to mock increased speculation about her sexuality. On Feb. 27, Village Voice critic Michael Musto blogged about the indie actress, asking, "I mean, come on already, is she??? You know, Lebanese! She certainly dresses like a, you know, tomboy. And if you google 'Ellen Page boyfriend,' not a whole lot comes up, except for a link to some interview where she refers to an old beau."
But the sketch raised another question, asked by the blog Jezebel Sunday: Did Page essentially come out on "SNL?"
ABCNEWS.com's call to Page's publicist was not immediately returned. But regardless of her intentions, the sketch's message of acceptance came across loud and clear, and it seems to be as well received as the actress herself.
"Even if it's just her addressing the rumors, and not an 'outing,' I still think it was a ballsy, strong move," commenter ChampagneofBeers said of Jezebel Sunday. "Way to go , Ellen. Even though I have a bf, I'd totally wrap my legs around her."

I'm a gay old fart and I love Ellen Page. I hope she's gay and won't hold it against her if she's not!

exactly why is this news and why does anyone care?

I guess if you can't google it, it must not be true!

Lisa, if you didn't care, why did you respond?

Lisa responded because it's EVERYWHERE even when your looking on a child's website.

Michael Musto needs to get a life, he comes across as a creepy stalker. Outing people before they have the opportunity to do it themselves is just low.

I wish those dastardly homosexuals would quit trying to make us gay. Now they're trying to get a cultural icon and role model to young girls. This is almost as bad as gay marriage. Which would most assuredly turn everyone gay and destroy society as we know it. That's it. No more mojitos until Ellen Page is straight again. Keep it up and we're taking Express and making it into a camping store.

Let's hope she isn't.

I thought this movie was kool...and interesting.

Right on, Greg. Then we could totally date her!

It's none of our business if she is gay or not. The Gay community just wants to label her. They feel the more Celebrities that are gay will make them feel more accepted.

I really don't mind straight people, as long as they act gay in public.

I guess they do this because it sells papers or something. Of course, if she did the sketch purposely to mess with their minds, it serves them right. Then again, it was just a sketch, and she could have been, you know... acting!
and anyone who thinks looking for old boyfriends is a reliable way to answer the question is a little clueless; but then anyone trying to answer the question in the first place is a little silly anyway.

I'm so freakin sick of people who post "why is this news or why does anyone care?" That's what the freakin headlines are for - so that you can skip over it if you don't find the subject noteworthy.

Well, of course she must be gay. She certainly couldn't just be acting in a sketch. Which means she must have also tortured a pedophile and gotten pregnant as a teenager; she wasn't just acting in movies. And if we're going off of her sketches on SNL, that means she's also really Miley Cyrus.

Oh, and if Michael Musto is right that Ellen's a lesbian just because she doesn't have a boyfriend, there are a heck of a lot of lesbians out there. Shut up, Michael Musto.

Scott - LMAO!

I liked it better when homosexuality was considered a mental illness in every text book. What happened to that? By trying to legitimize it we have in effect resorted to normalize it instead of the proper aspect of calling it what it is, mental illness. Now I will probably be flamed for having a opinion contrary to "politically correct". Oh well, some one needs to say it!

I agree with Jim.

Jim -- I agree. That's why the more celebrities they get to label the more normal they feel.
