Jon Stewart Cracks Up Crowd for Good Cause
March 26, 2008 1:08 PM
Like much of his audience, “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart considers the invasion of Iraq “a dopey move,” but he was deeply humbled when he received the United Service Organization’s (USO) Merit Award last night.
The comedian was awarded the USO of Metropolitan Washington’s Merit Award for his commitment to the military community. Despite his comedic questioning of the war, the Emmy winner has made several trips to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to visit wounded veterans.
“I always leave Walter Reed feeling that this country is on a far stronger footing than anyone imagined” he said.
Stewart recently invited 13 patients to a filming of “The Daily Show” in New York where they enjoyed a private meet-and-greet with the host and the show’s producers.
“I don’t hold policy against individuals” he said of the troops. “They weren’t liberal, conservative, Republican, Democrat; they were this country, but braver.”
To attend the USO of Metropolitan Washington’s 26th Annual Awards Dinner last night, Stewart drove himself from New York to Arlington, Va. -- a surprising move for one of the entertainment industry’s best known comedians.
In front of hundreds of service members and their families, Stewart joked, “while many of you have been through some things ... I don’t want to diminish what I went through to get here ... it was a long drive”
The applause was deafening and the laughter a welcome sound for the Iraq veterans filling the room.
Last year, “Daily Show” correspondent Ron Riggle reported from Iraq, taping short, YouTube-like segments for the nightly broadcast. As for Stewart’s own plans to visit the region, he said “I would go there but I’m ... uh, what’s the word chicken-s***, can I say that?”

Sure, humble now, but when it's back to taping, the military becomes a punchline again.
