Two Best-Sellers Bound to Touch and Thrill

March 27, 2008 5:25 PM

Two best-sellers are now available on home video. One is an appeal for peace. The other will just give you nightmares.

The Academy Awards didn't give director Marc Foster ("Monster's Ball") very much love for "The Kite Runner" -- his big-screen adaptation of the best-selling book -- but the movie did win the best foreign language film award at the Golden Globes. The tale of a man returning to his homeland in Afghanistan to save his friend's son is now available on DVD. Extras include commentary from the director and author. There's also a public service announcement, but it's not like the PSAs you saw between Saturday morning cartoons.

Stephen King -- the worst bedtime storyteller dad in the history of literature -- returns with "The Mist." Based on King's novella of the same name, the psychological thriller is about a storm, some ugly creatures with healthy appetites and the atrocities we can commit out of fear. There are a slew of extras on this DVD, including a look behind the scenes and "The Horror of It All: The Visual Effects of the Mist" featurettes. The special two-disc version includes a starkly different black-and-white version of the film. Don't watch either cut before bed.

"Kite Runner", I had the chance to see this film on DVD and I was emotionally moved by the story. I was so distraught on the outcome, but I was also hopeful that by people viewing this film, we can try to make a difference. I am disappointed that a once beautiful country can be destroy by human greed. I trully enjoy the movie.
