Can't We All Just Go to Rehab?

June 10, 2008 4:48 PM

Abc_drdrew_080610_mn A new batch of boldface names just checked into rehab for stardom and sobriety, probably in that order.

VH1's "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" welcomed its second set of celebs yesterday. The most high-profile patient? Rodney King, the man whose videotaped beating by police officers sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

Joining King is "Taxi" star Jeff Conway, who attempted to detox during the show's first season but left early; stripper turned "American Idol" alum Nikki McKibbin; Rod Stewart's son Sean Stewart; model/actress Amber Smith; actress Tawny Kitaen and ex-Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler.

Also joining the cast is an unlikely sober buddy: Actor and artist Gary Busey, who kicked his cocaine habit 13 years ago.

They're all corralled in Dr. Drew Pinsky's chemical dependency unit at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. Though Pinksy's probably best known as the stern voice of reason on "Celebrity Rehab" and the "Loveline" radio and MTV show, he has been treating addicts for over 20 years.

As it did in its first season, "Celebrity Rehab" will chronicle the crew's 21-day regimen of detox and therapy, which began Monday. Season Two will premiere on VH1 in October.

In January, before the first season premiered, Pinsky told ABCNEWS.com that cameras and a weekly paycheck for the patients helped the process.

"Cameras sort of hold people accountable -- they motivate them to keep them going," he said. "I was able to do more intensive work because these people were getting paid by the week. They wanted to get paid and they wanted to be on TV."

But while the people who participated in season one of "Celebrity Rehab" got PR because of the show, not all of them got sober. Conway, clearly, needs another session. After production wrapped, "American Idol" finalist Jessica Sierra got arrested for disorderly intoxication and resisting officers. Her punishment: Another stint in rehab under Pinsky's supervision, this time for one year, no cameras rolling.

Here's to rehab sticking this time around.

I commend people who to to rehab. It indicates a desire to get well. I know celebrities are kind of kooky, well, it kind of comes with the territory, but I wish them all well.

What is wrong with these people? Compared to the rest of the people on earth, they have the world by the tail and all they can think of doing with their seemingly unlimited resources is drugs and/or booze?

After the loss of so many due to this behavior, what makes any one of them believe that they, alone, will be the exception to the rule of addiction/death?

Too bad their unlimited resources couldn't go to a worthy cause(s) or to people who wouldn't spend it is such self-destructive ways.

Unbelievable. Try paying people in Omaha, NE to go through rehab. There'd be a bunch in line!!

Congratulations to all who have the desire to stop using drugs. I now realize that the strongest addicts are those that can quit.

Why's R. King in rehab? Where to start with him, huh? So many, many things to fix with that man. They certainly have their work cut out for them.

Rodney King is no celebrity!

I think it's great that Dr. Drew is doing another celeb rehab series. The first one was great, and although I read some objections from psych/addiction professional types who didn't like the out-in-the-open nature of such private, personal treatment, I think this series will do untold good for thousands of addicted people and may make rehab less scary to patients need it. It has been fascinating to watch the next chapter of the story we see unfold every week on A&E's "Intervention." Good luck, Drew and second rehab crew! It works if you work it. (And it teaches if you watch it.)

Ridiculous. It would cost the average person an arm and a leg to go through a month of rehab - these guys RECEIVE money to do it. Most of them already have money... not fair. I'm glad they want help, but they should have to pay for it like anyone else. I won't watch it.

Oh Icky, you should watch - it is SO much fun. It's like an educational train wreck. I love this show and cannot wait for it to start. OCTOBER?!?!?

I'm not sure what I find more offensive that Rodney King is called a celebrity or that he and others get to profit from his 15 minutes. The police had absolutely no right to do what they did, but he wasn't going to church when they pulled him over. I lived through those riots, I drove to work with the national guard at the ready, police checking cars, being escorted home, being shot at for eating a diner and when it was all over going and assisting in the clean up because of the senseless destruction of innocent people's homes and property AND NOW we want to call Rodney King a celebrity WHY? I guess for most people unless you live it you don't realize the pain. The show is basically giving a criminal a showcase and making him even more famous.

They need a proofreader... Conway is misspelled twice.

I have watched both seasons and the second one was really good. Yes, these people get paid for the show but think what they have PAID with their lives and their families lives with the drugs and alcohol. I do not know one person that if given the same chance would take it. So rather than sending negative emails why dont you all send them encouragement. I wish all the best and truly hope to be able to follow Steven from Guns and Roses and pray he succeeds from now on. He seems to have a wonderful "mama" wife standing beside him and encouraging him . I love it when she calls him papa and he calls her mama. Blessings to you both you have helped me more than anyone will ever know with my own issues and problems by watching you. Thanks

I've been watching Celebrity Rehab on Much More Music here in Canada and I don't think some of the participants are taking treatment as seriously as they need to take it.

What nonsense some people write! Rodney King is known all over the world.People like Tawny and Amber and the American idol singer are only known to Americans.
And contrary to what some people believe, that is not the whole world.

Watching Sober House now and wish them all the best.

I found Rodney King to be an inspiration in going to the site of his beating and forgiving the scum that beat him mercilessly. As far as celebrity, I agree with several other of the posts that they are rich and the $$$ should be going to help poor people who need the help and can't afford rehab. But that is an intregal part of modern American worship of fame and power that allows CEOs to get millions of tax $$$ to use for their own bonuses and steal other companies while the rest of the nation is starting to look for the local bread line. I would also like to say that aside from King and Gary Busy that most of the other celebs won't be remembered 10 years from now. American Idol and being a supermodel or a competent supporting musician is not REAL fame.
