Hasselbeck: I Was 'Soft' on Obama
June 19, 2008 3:18 PM
A day after Michelle Obama took her turn co-hosting "The View," regulars Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck chatted about their impressions of her.
Hasselbeck, who gave her reaction to Mrs. Obama's 'View' appearance last night on Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, said she's received some flack for being friendly to the potential first lady.
"I've probably taken some heat for being soft on her, you know, 'the role of the Republican was soft on Michelle Obama,'" she said. "But I think it was a nice environment here. We were actually able to have a nice talk."
"To think that as women, you couldn't sit down and have a civil conversation about the many things you do have in common, aside from the politics that you don't, I find ridiculous," Hasselbeck said.
Watch the ladies debrief about Michelle Obama's "View" debut HERE.
Co-host Sherri Shepherd said she was touched by an exchange between Mrs. Obama and Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
"What I thought was so touching, she made you cry, you guys were talking about your kids," Shepherd said.
"We were talking about traveling and leaving the kids because we're going to Vegas and what we do when we leave them," Hasselbeck said.
During yesterday's show, Hasselbeck showed the ladies her jam-packed chart of instructions for her children's diet while she is away in Las Vegas next week taping the show.
At a commercial break, Hasselbeck burst into tears while telling audience members it's going to be the first time she'll be away from her baby boy, Taylor, since he was born.
Later, as Hasselbeck was trying to compose herself before the next segment, Mrs. Obama asked if she was okay, and appeared to briefly commiserate with her.
Read about the moment HERE.
Hasselbeck, 31, a Republican who often defends President Bush and the war on terror on the air, has been vocal about her criticism of Obama's husband, Sen. Barack Obama -- grilling him when he appeared on the show in March over his association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
But the two women appear to have bonded, with Hasselbeck offering praise Thursday for Mrs. Obama.
"She works out! We were doing push ups in the back," she said. "She's an extremely confident woman which is so great."
Whoopi Goldberg said she was surprised people were anticipating tension on the show.
"We weren't rude to Cindy [McCain] and we didn't go after her," Goldberg said. "It wasn't about us fighting her, it was about her saying who she was."
Sherri Shepherd said she thought Mrs. Obama showed a "different side of herself" as a wife and mother on the show.
"I found her very, very comfortable to be around," Joy Behar said. "She's extremely comfortable with herself and you know, we were kibitzing, and she's very charismatic, " she said. "People were drawn to her."

who gives a f*ck? Really. Is this what choosing the American leader is about these days? Such meaningless, superficial crap...and The View is completely stupid...

Perhaps the Republican softy will reconsider when she has her kids say good bye to her to go to Iraq to fatten the President's pockets!
"I was soft," between her ears!

Hasselbeck Really Britney Spears?
Both are bleached blonde.
Both talk about subjects they know nothing about.
Both support Republicans.
Both share similar intellects.
And you never see the in the same place at the same time.
Hasselbeck Really Britney Spears?

Yet another Republican goes soft on Obama, This is becoming almost a daily event. "I was soft?" That is an understatement. It was a soft gooey coffee morning girlie girl thing. She had her chance and missed it. To bad.

She said that Hannity and Colmes is her favorite show...........Is there anything else to say?
Posted by: Jim | Jun 19, 2008 3:56:20 PM
Michelle Obama was REALLY good on The View yesterday.
She is a cool lady.
I thought it was great that Hasselback and Michelle Obama could bond just because they are mothers who have to be away from their kids every once in awhile.
I liked the fact that Michelle praised Laura Bush. Laura Bush is a CLASS ACT. It would be nice if Cindy McCain could follow suit as Laura Bush.

So what's new?
How about doing some jounalism about Americans rights being trampled. Seems like while US journalists are all caught up in the moment, international journalists see what is happening to our democracy......

First of all Michelle Obama wouldn't even dignify Elisabeth with going back in forth with her for one and then Elisabeth is only on the show because she was on Survivor...... She to dumb to be a democrat so of course she a republican look how stupid Bush is...... He's dumb and knows it...... I'm still trying to figure out why the troops are in Iraq....... But the good thing is that with Barack does get in office like Bill Clinton before him he will have to clean up behind a Bush the only bad thing is that Jr. had 8 years so there is a lot of work to do and his dumb daddy was in there for 4 but Reagan was in there before him God Rest his Soul

SadState, the Canadian article really isn't relevant and says nothing about your imaginary "loss of Democracy"...
Posted by: Jazz | Jun 19, 2008 5:04:55 PM
I think Hassleback was so "soft" because she she is used to making unintelligent comments about topics she knows nothing about. She wouldn't dare make a fool of herself by trying to debate Obama. Michelle would blow her out of the water.

I think Hasselbeck is a racist and thinks that only white republicans can e intellighent and nurturing parents. MO showed class, beauty and intellect, something that Hasselbeck hasn't learned yet

Al (From NJ)(Now in VA) - you should try to refrain from calling people stupid when you make so many spelling and grammatical errors in your posts. I counted at least seven mistakes in your one, very long run-on sentence.

They had just hired Theresa Heinz-Kerry's handler to babysit Michelle and they needed a freindly show to put her on to see how the reprogramming was working. Therefore, everything you see and hear out of MO from now til Nov. will be scripted for her by her handler. Truly sad that the Obama campaign and the DNC thought it was necessary. I'm waiting to see if the woman has more success with MO than with her last pupil.

Hasselbeck is a waste of space. If I were a Republican I would pay her to switch sides. Idiot woman....Her kids will probably be glad for the break.

Elizabeth, a fashion major and jock-oriented woman, is not a very knowledgeable person. When she pieces together an argument, she relies on tradition and sentiment, but rarely on any hard facts or data. She's sort of the "Stepford Wife" of "The View".

Michelle showed herself to be a perfect first lady, intelligent, warm, caring and lovely. Not a Stepford wife like Cindy McCain. Can she not get past that phony republican issue of Pride in America? It is like a creepy sound track coming out of her mouth every time a camera is near. Perhaps she should get comfortable in the kitchen and stop plagiarizing recipes.

Why does EH talk so much abt her screaming match w/ RO? That was a large part of her interview on H&C. Yet they act like RO can't let it go. EH can't let it go b/c she doesn't have the talent to stand on her own merit. She in fact said her favorite show was H&C. She is just tacky.
One of the worst personalities on tv.

What a mistake getting on this show w/ Lizzy (I'm the only one prepped before each show, and still make a fool of myself), Sherri (the world is flat) and Baba Wawa (I'm happy to share details of my extramarital affair to make a buck).
When you go, do Joy a favor and take her with you.

This is considered to be Top News on ABC? It is pathetic how what this women says is considered sooooooo important by your internet site. I don't care what Hasselbeck says or thinks. I know she is a republican Bush lover and has said horrible lies about Obama that she has no business saying. Why do you never have a comment by Barbara Walters or Whoopi Goldberg about how important it is for Obama to be our next president?
Posted by: Vicki | Jun 19, 2008 10:34:08 PM
Why is abcnews.com obcessed w/ EH? Everyday a video clip that shows her talking about sex, her breasts, or the daily repub talking point, given to her by Geddie.
Why not promote Ellen's show? Why always a View clip and almost always EH?
No mistake that abcnews.com rarely allows comments regarding The View or EH.
EH doesn't draw many positives, does she?
Posted by: Lori | Jun 19, 2008 10:55:48 PM
I can't believe I even read this story when I knew it involved EH.
When the View was first on, I enjoyed it. There was actual intelligent conversation. But then they lost Meredith, Babs became an empty suit and of all people they could have hired, they brought in EH. I haven't really watched it since the first couple of shows she was one. She is an annoying little nobody who's only claim to fame is being on Survivor. Perhaps if she actually had something to contribute other than her loud mouth, I'd respect her, but I just can't. Too many times she's mouthed off about topics she is totally uninformed about or completely out of line. Yes, she's pretty, but that's about it. If I wanted to see an empty-headed woman speak nonsense, I'd rent "Mannequin."
I love Joy and have been a fan of Whoopi for years. Sadly, I never get to hear what those two thoughtful women have to say because big-mouth EH won't let anyone else get a word in edge-wise. I've tried to watch it since Whoopi and just can't stomach that little twit.
PLEASE, someone, shut EH up, take her off the air and bring back the intelligent show that existed before the advent of skinny Star and brainless EH. ABC - I don't want to even see EH mentioned on your website. She is the WORST!
BTW, Babs - get over yourself. You've brought down your respect factor many times over by ruining this show with who you have as a host. And that bio of yours - could have gone my whole life without hearing about your indiscretions. I used to admire your integrity. Not anymore.
Posted by: Sherilynn | Jun 19, 2008 10:57:50 PM
MO had Hasselbreck in her grasp when she reached across the desk and grabbed her hand - she targeted her, and Hasselbeck fell for it.
What a joke - I don't watch the View, I watched the clips/never will watch The View again.
Worthless program - very Obama biased

The Elisabeth Hasselbeck Show!
All the others are there to merely support her when abcnews.com wants to feature her in the video clip of the day.
Posted by: Pamela | Jun 19, 2008 11:10:56 PM
This show is so republican biased. Anytime Joy or Whoopi wants EH or Sherri to defend one of their comments... go to comercial...topic over.
That's because the executive producer is a staunch republican.

The only thing soft about Hasselbeck is her reasoning. That girl needs to get her some syllogisms!

I'm republican. EH only hurts and embarrasses the party, as much as her beloved GWB. She is so self promoting and disrepectful to everyone on that show. Even in the Rosie spat, I'd have to side w/ Rosie, as much as I disagreed w/ her. EH set her up and was the one doing all the screaming and pointing.
abc... end our misery and get rid of her.
Posted by: seethelight | Jun 19, 2008 11:33:51 PM
EH is incapable of interviewing anyone. She is ignorant of the guests and will interrupt them constantly.
But she sure does love talking about her reality tv shows.

I look forward to the day this country is taken back by adults who behave more like adults. Men who act like men, not little boys, and women who act like women, not little girls. The fact that Hasselback and Michelle can be civil, even nice to each other, despite disagreements, is called maturity! Maturity, what a concept! I think both Obama and McCain do act like adults--thank God for that! We have have good candidates this year! Unfortunately they both must deal with a large group of people in both of their respective parties who've taken immaturity and selfishness to be a way of life. They slap a flag on their behavior and call it patriotism when it's little more than school yard bullying. I'm voting Obama this year. I like McCain too, but unfortunately his party went down the path of bullying and immaturity about 8 years ago, and I've definately had enough of that! It's time for a change, a new direction, and even Hasselback is starting to want some change; a little bit more civility in the way we treat each other. Perhaps maybe even a little more understanding, God forbid, of her opponents?

Most of you should be ashamed of yourselves. If you don't like EH, then why even worry about it in the first place? I am not a huge 'View' watcher, but when I do watch it I hear more than just one voice. You all only choose to hear one voice so that you have something to complain about. Grow up! It doesn't matter if you are democrat or republican, it matters how you feel about certain issues. This piece was about a democrat & a republican getting along. Maybe you all should take a cue from them!

Posted by: Jazz | Jun 20, 2008 11:33:57 AM
Sorry Sandy from Jun 19, 2008 4:00:39 PM, but you're are certainly misinformed. First of all your article is an opinion piece based around the rantings of a man who can't even pass a polygraph when asked about his accusations. Larry Sinclair is a certified nut, and as your 'journalist' is using Sinclair's baloney as fodder for a story he loses all credibility. Sinclair is guilty of defamation, so really he's the one breaking the law. Secondly, I wonder if you have even ever left the US. I've been abroad and have visited 12 countries over the last two years, and your 'journalist' is part of a very small minority. In fact, the world generally feels that McCain is business as usual, which means a liar and an elitist. Get real, get the facts, and until then, get a life.

Elisabeth is so two-faced. She went on Klannity and talked as if she was some big thug. BTW wonder how she feels about Sean and Hal Turner? Since she is into the "Guilt by Association" thing. Does that make Sean indirectly to balme for the Oklahoma bombing? Tim McVeigh/Hal Turner/Sean Hannity

I very seldom watch the view but did watch this particular show. After reading the opinions I now know why Elizabeth seems so out of place on the show. The other women gel and respect each other but I don't see that when Elizabeth is speaking. When I hear her speak, I feel sorry for her as she is so much out of her element and she knows it. Elizabeth is the type of person most women just won't even deal with because of the attitude she displays and it is too bad she does not recognize it. This is a personality flaw not whether she is a republican or democrat. I never watch survivor either, it is such a ....why would anyone want to be on it. Barbara,
why would you put your life out there like that in your book and why would any of us care about your tiny little life

When did Hasselb**ch become an authority on anything??? She was a prep school girl that ended up on Survivor. She's had her fifteen minutes, shut her up already. It's not that I'm against republican rants (and I'm NOT a republican) - but geez, at least get someone with a little more meat to their resume. She was raised with a silver spoon in her mouth and it's been stuck there ever since - and she can't figure out why everyone doesn't just live like she does. After all, it's so uncool to be poor. Yuck!
