Michelle Obama Consoles Teary Elisabeth Hasselbeck
June 18, 2008 3:42 PM
When potential first lady Michelle Obama sat across from Elisabeth Hasselbeck Wednesday as a guest co-host of ABC's "The View," it wasn't the hair-pulling "girl fight" some anticipated.
Mrs. Obama -- wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama -- co-hosted the program Wednesday, appearing relaxed and cracking jokes alongside "View" regulars Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd.
Early in the show, as if to diffuse any tension between Obama and Hasselbeck, a self-professed and vocal Republican, co-host Whoopi Goldberg said on-air, "Okay you two, no more hair-pulling!"
"I'm sorry," Obama deadpanned. "We're through," Hasselbeck said, smiling at Obama.
Later, during a commercial break, Hasselbeck broke into tears while explaining to audience members that she is sad to be leaving her baby boy, Taylor, for the first time next week to tape the show in Las Vegas. The potential first lady appeared to briefly console her as all of the ladies sat on the couch in preparation for a group interview of celebrity guest Matthew Broderick.
Obama looked over at a teary Hasselbeck and appeared to whisper to her and fellow co-host Sherri Shepherd, "Everything okay?"
It was a stunning demonstration of concern between two women of very different political views.
Hasselbeck, 31, a Republican who often defends President Bush and the war on terror on the air, has been vocal about her criticism of Obama's husband, Sen. Barack Obama -- grilling him when he appeared on the show in March over his association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
For her part, Mrs. Obama, 44, has never been shy about voicing her opinions and has come under fire from conservatives for a remark early in the primaries that her husband's candidacy was "the first time in my adult life I am really proud of my country."
On the air today, Hasselbeck said it was ridiculous for people to anticipate a "girl fight" between herself and Michelle Obama.
"We must be enemies because we disagree politically?" Hasselbeck asked rhetorically.
During the show Obama said of Hasselbeck: "This girl is solid, she's got great kids, she's funny."
Adding to the scene: Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley sitting in the front row, sporting a natty pinstripe suit and a Barack Obama pin.

Michelle Obama = classy, unlike the liars trying to drag her down.

I agree Michelle Obama shows a lot of class, hopefully the next first lady in the white house.

Michelle Obama is really classy. I think she will be able to do what Hilary Clinton tried to do as First Lady.

I agree with you all! She is a classic woman. After watching her yesterday, am happy to say her husband will get my vote.

The Republicans like to paint people as raving lunatics ..What else is new. The way the describe Mrs. Obama.. is like she was going to come on the show and eat everyone head with a knife and fork.
For those who will come to know her; she is smart .. caring and a dignify woman. All the qualities you look for in a first lady, and she is a SUPER MOM to boot.
Its a free country to knock her on the Democratic issues, but as a solid human being, only you and a mirror knows.. what your problem is.

Hasselbeck have issues,
most of the time she speaks is like listening to FOXNEWS.I guess she goes home watch fox and head right back to the VIEW like a PARROT who pick up a new sentence or 2.
BTW .. Today was really weird , thats some prozac type behaviour.

I've always been impressed with how "real" the relationship between Barack and Michelle looks on TV. Michelle holds his feet to the fire and keeps him grounded. The good-natured chiding, stern with a twinkle in her eye, is pretty darn cute. I loved the fist-bump when she left him to make his speech. Couldn't believe some idiots tried to make it terroristic! Sheesh! She has taken a lot of insults with incredible grace.

I think it's strange how so many news web sites give Hasselbeck video clips on their sites so we can watch her latest quip on The View. Do people really see her as a guru of knowledge about the political scene? She's a talk show host and one who has had a hard time getting along with other hosts. I'm no big fan of Rosie O'Donnell's, but really Hasselbeck needs to get over herself and the news sites need to quit pandering to whatever she says.

Saw the show and really enjoyed it. Women can hold different political views and still be respectful of one another. Michelle Obama has always impressed me as a woman of incredible grace and class. She is a breath of fresh air.

John McCain kept Cindy under wraps during his bid for the presidency but now that she’s out there telling us she’s way prouder of America than Michelle Obama, So I’m doing America a service by telling the truth, and nothing but the whole truth about Cindy.Michelle Obama is proud of America too, but she’s not Republican, garden club, percocet munching ex-cheerleader like Cindy. And she doesn’t steal drugs from charitable organizations.Michelle never had a trust fund like Cindy and she grew up under humble circumstancesw on Chicago’s South Side. Her father was a pump operator and she managed to overcome her disadvantages as a working class black woman and attend Princeton then she graduated from Harvard Law School where she met Barack Obama. Michelle has paid enough dues to be far more credible than dozen stoned out Republican trophy wives when she tells you she is proud of America. America should be proud of Michelle Obama. The whole thing is a bunch of nonsense. Most people have the common sense to understand what this political posturing and xenophobic flag waving from the McCain camp is all about. Call me harsh, but I’m tired of Republicans wrapping themselves in the flag and smearing perfectly decent Americans. It’s time to take off the gloves.

I am a huge fan of her husband's politics and policies but I have to say - the more I see of Michele the more amazed I am. She is something VERY special and she will be a TREASURE as first lady! What a great show! Thanks View.
