Hasselbeck Gets Heated, Teary Over N-word

July 17, 2008 2:09 PM

Abc_abc_view_hasselbeck_080717_mn Elisabeth Hasselbeck let her emotions get the better of her, again.

The “View” co-host, who last year got into a shouting match about the Iraq war with former moderator Rosie O’Donnell, almost broke into tears today during a heated debate about why it’s OK for some people to use the n-word but not others.

“Sometimes I think it’s almost worse to use it privately than publicly,” she said, talking about how Jesse Jackson allegedly uttered the n-word during the same off-camera moment in which he said he wanted to castrate Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama.

Sherri Shepherd explained, “I can use it as a term of endearment [but] I don’t want to hear it come out of your mouth,” and Whoopi Goldberg chimed in too. But despite their reasoning and Barbara Walters’ remark that “everybody is giving you an answer,” Hasselbeck only got more heated.

“This is upsetting to me,” she said four minutes into the discussion, choking back tears. “This is a conversation that is hard and we’re going to have it here and we have it here well because we love each other. When we live in a world where pop culture that uses that term, and we’re trying to get to a place where we feel like we’re in the same place, where we feel like we’re in the same world, how are we supposed to then move forward if we keep using terms that bring back that pain?”

Goldberg offered an emphatic, “You must acknowledge the understanding of what it is and why it is,” which eventually quieted down Hasselbeck.

Hasselbeck, 31, last got teary in June, when Michelle Obama sat in on “The View” as a guest co-host. During a commercial break, Hasselbeck broke into tears while telling audience members she was sad to leave her baby boy, Taylor, for the first time to tape “The View” in Las Vegas. Obama looked over at the upset Hasselbeck and appeared to whisper to her and fellow co-host Sherri Shepherd, "Everything okay?"

Why is she always hating and concerning her self with black peope. More days then not up in the corner of the ABC sight there is a watch button to see how her spoiled as s is critizing Obama over non policy issues. Matt neads to keep his hoe in check.

She needs to shut up already. I am so sick of Elisabeth Hasselbeck and her views on politics and race. She is a dumb blonde who was on Survivor for pete's sake. Get over yourself Elisabeth, you are a nobody.

Matt does need to keep his hoe in check. I believe yesterday's watch was: (Haselbeck: Obama has identity crises). Sounds like she the one is having the crises

I haven't quite figured out what's more annoying lately .. the constant babble about "black this" and "black that" OR Brett Favre possibly coming back to the NFL!! Stop it .. I'm begging you!

As a white person, I want to know why it is ok for a black to say the n-word, but I can us it in the exact same context and it is racial. "Because it is our word" or " Because you aren't black" is not a good answer. If I got hurt so deeply because of a word, I would not use that word myself. She has the right to ask that question.

She has a point. Why should anybody want to use the n- word?

Come on Eric - name calling very unnecessary. Real classy fellow.

Posted by: sunny | Jul 17, 2008 2:44:07 PM

At least she's asking .. you know the other 3 left wing looneys aren't going to dare approach that subject! Props to her - she's probably just over the top frustrated because that question will NEVER be answered. Well, unless you just take "because it's OK for us to use it - not you" for an answer! Whatever

“Sometimes I think it’s almost worse to use it privately than publicly,” she said, talking about how Jesse Jackson allegedly uttered the n-word during the same off-camera moment in which he said he wanted to castrate Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama. HEY ABC WHY DO YOU HAVE TO USE THE WORD 'ALLEGEDLY" WHEN IT COMES TO BLACKS SAYING THE N WORD, HELL WE ALL HEARD IT AND SAW HIM SAY IT THERE IS NO "ALLEGEDLY" I BET IF A WHITE HAD SAID THE N WORD THERE WOULD BE 'ALLEGEDLY" ABOUT IT....

Posted by: MARK | Jul 17, 2008 2:45:12 PM

RIGHT ON ELISABETH!

Posted by: MARK | Jul 17, 2008 2:46:55 PM

SHE IS SURROUNDED BY 3 LEFT WING PRO OBAMA SUPPORTERS, ITS NOT FAIR!

Posted by: MARK | Jul 17, 2008 2:47:42 PM

Not that it means much, but I know I use the B word when I'm talking to my girlfriends. I say "what's up my B**tches?". And that's fine for us and it doesn't bother us, but if a man were to say that to us, we would probably deck him. I say it's their word, if they wanna use it, more power to them. Does it really affect me at the end of the day? NOPE!

Posted by: Jen | Jul 17, 2008 2:48:47 PM

This woman is unstable, period!

Posted by: jeez! | Jul 17, 2008 2:48:50 PM

Boycott this show until they make it fair .. sheesh! 3 left wing nut cases against her point of VIEW! How fair is that?

Posted by: Boycott | Jul 17, 2008 2:49:34 PM

Hey morons...she's married to Tim, not Matt Hasselbeck.

Posted by: B | Jul 17, 2008 2:50:06 PM

This poor pretty woman is just not right? I think she’s beautiful thoughtful and I can appreciate that she wants to represent a more right leaning view on the “View”. I log on to ABC News daily to catch up on the news but cringe every time I see a video snipit with her picture. Her problem is that she does not have enough depth to support her assertions and not enough balance to lend credibility to her argument.

Posted by: Stephen | Jul 17, 2008 2:50:32 PM

So now a group of people can "own" a word? Really?

Posted by: Nonsense | Jul 17, 2008 2:50:45 PM

She needs to go home to her little wonderful white world and leave the real world alone. Obviously, she can't handle it.

Posted by: hang | Jul 17, 2008 2:50:53 PM

Her 15 minutes are almost up.

Posted by: billp | Jul 17, 2008 2:51:33 PM

One has to wonder if ABC keeps her on just to have a token rightwingnut because she's really darn annoying.
