Sherri Joked About Walters, Not Abortion

July 23, 2008 12:56 PM

Abc_abc_view_sherri_080723_mn Sherri Shepherd stirred up a scandal. Now she’s blaming it on her sense of humor and lack of shame.

In a recent interview with Christian magazine Precious Times, the “View” co-host, a born-again Christian, said she’d like to preach the word of God to Jewish “View” creator Barbara Walters.

“Oh sometimes I say, ‘Lord [evangelists] Juanita Bynum or Joyce Meyer would be so good at this table. They could lay hands on Barbara and get her saved,’” Shepherd told the magazine.

Today, Shepherd sat down at Walters’ table and promptly apologized to the media matriarch.

“It was a joke that I made, it didn’t come off the way I wanted it to,” she said. “I called Barbara in France and she laughed … She didn’t ask me to say this but I do want to say Barbara, if I offended you in any way I apologize, I love you.”

With that faux pas cleared up, Shepherd moved on to the other headline-making quote from her Precious Times interview: That before finding God, she “was sleeping with a lot of guys and had more abortions than I would like to count.”

Shepherd didn’t go back on that quote on “The View,” but she explained, “I suffered from a lot of shame and guilt … I wanted everyone to know that not everyone’s perfect. Some people do it more than once.”

She also said that she met a woman who offered her advice that assuaged some of her guilt.

“She said ‘Sherri, when you get to heaven, all your babies are going to be there to say ‘Hi Mama!,’’” Shepherd said.

“View” moderator Whoppi Goldberg closed the discussion with a call to not judge her co-host.

“As long as you talked to God and you worked it out with God, who are we to say anything else?,” she said.

Jess...take your own example and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS and don't judge my opinions with your pro choice rhetoric.

Jess, I don't know which God you worship (if at all), but I believe Thou Shalt Not Kill refers to all human life. Go back to church and learn your bible.

I am not standing on soap boxes preaching my relgious views to people, or going on camera saying i think i know how to 'save' people. I DO mind my own business. And sa far as my opinion on here, I am stating them as just that, unlike you, who comes on here proclaiming you know what God thinks a nd that you speak for him! LOL!!! YOu ideas of what God thinks is just your opinion that is not even backed up by the bible, which again, I don't even buy in many cases. and yes, this is just my opinion. Now i dare you to say your views on abortion are just your opinion as well! Are you even able to do that?????

Posted by: jess | Jul 23, 2008 2:35:24 PM

"thou shall not kill" is a whole lot different than "thou MUST develope every pregnancy to full term"...here's the difference between people like me and people like you. People like me would never force anyone to stop a pregnancy OR to keep one. people like me RESPECT that I have NO jurisdiction with the INSIDE of another person's body. People like you think you do! People like you think you have some entitlement to FORCE someone to maintain a pregnancy against their will. People liek you think you are God, that you are entitled to some slave-master status where you can FORCE your religious OPINIONS on others and FORCE Them to comply with your religion. People like you are more than a little bit nuts. And to top it off, you think God is happy with you for this overbearing draconian thinking that you do in HIS name when he NEVER gave you authority or marching order to do as such.

A lot of you people with all of the negative comments really need to "check" yourselves.

Sherri just admitted what a lot of women are too scared to admit to.

Some of your wives, sisters, daughters AND MOTHERS have slipped off and had an abortion and never told a soul. The result of secret affairs and one night stands.

My wife use to be a counselor to women in crisis, and ALL types of women would come to see her.....MIDDLE CLASS, UPPER CLASS AND ALL COLORS.

So before you "great, never did ANYTHING wrong in your entire life" people start throwing stones.....LOOK AT THE WOMEN IN YOUR LIVES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

evagal,
Take your bible thumpin else where. While I am pro life for myself, I believe every woman has a choice. Who are you to judge? Now get to the kitchen and make me a chicken pot pie woman!

V, I have no problem with Sherry giving her opinons on her life, or talking about her experiences. What i found very offensive was her thinking SHE had any authority to say she knew how Barbara couldbe saved! how arrogant! Barbara, who didn't struggle and screw up her life like Sherri did, should look to Sherri on how tobe 'saved" and who says Barbas needs saving at all???? These born agains can be sooooo narcisitic. I have some folks in this town who are like that, and most of us are just polite and we don't challnege them or tell the m to shut up but you know we all want to. We all groan when they walk over and start their babbling. We're all fine with our souls, thank you very much. we've never ahd the alcholism, the abortions ,the drug problems, and frankly, we don't find you all the qualified to be giving advice to anyone. so, no, please don't try to speak at the school, or hand out CD's for all to listen to...did it ever occur to you folks that we're FINE a nd always have been. Barbara is FINE. she doens't need joyce meyers or anyone and how ARROGANT of Sherri to make such a statement.

Posted by: jess | Jul 23, 2008 2:46:15 PM

Saved? She's trying to save Barbara? She's the one that needs saved. Abortion is murder, so she has all these to answer to on judgement day! I would not want to be her. I hope she likes fire cause that is where she is going!!!

EVAGAL - There are no LEVELS of sin. You need to check yourself on that one. All sins are equal, even though to some that may not seem right, that's what He believes. I think it's hilarious to see someone who our society idolizes screw up so profoundly with such a slip of the tongue as this...Woops.

Posted by: MemyselfandIrene | Jul 23, 2008 2:48:45 PM

Barb, what's the punishment for casting stones when you are not without sin? Or for trying to force your will on others and do it in God's name when he never gave you authority to do so. ah well. Just remember when your time comes, you had been forewarned.

Posted by: jess | Jul 23, 2008 2:52:48 PM

jess....I agree with you 100 percent. I really don't like to get into the whole "religion" thing because I know that EVERYONE makes mistakes and none of us are better than the other.

It just makes me hot when people come on these blogs and get all "holier than thou" when I know that a lot of them are doing some cruddy stuff in the dark.

Posted by: V for Vendetta | Jul 23, 2008 2:56:08 PM

Huh what--
I hear you buddy...ha, ha...Evagal is on her knees, praying for our forgiveness right now. And fixing you a pot pie. Anyway, women do have a choice and if you think you cannot be a mother for whatever reason, then DON'T. Do not bring a child into this messed up world and abuse them, neglect them, forget them, scar them for life. Sometimes, it is best I think.

Posted by: mymyselfandIrene | Jul 23, 2008 2:56:26 PM

I agree V. gotta do some work. have a good day!

Posted by: jess | Jul 23, 2008 2:58:21 PM

I always love that whole, "if you worked it out with the invisible, make-believe being in the sky", then everything is okay. FREAKS! Just because you have a conversation with yourself doesn't make the wrongdoing you've done go away morons. It just really and truly does not work that way. PLEASE WAKE UP! Sherry Shepard is an idiot anyway.

While I give Sherry credit for apologizing to Barbara Walters, I still think that it was absolutely not necessary for her to share her story about numerous abortions with the whole world. People who use abortion as a form of birth control are really screwed up. I believe that it is each woman's right to choose whether to have an abortion or not, but if they are mature enough to make that decision then they should also be mature enough to use some form of birth control while they are sleeping with every guy in town. Their lack of responsibility will eventually catch up with them, and they may harm their bodies so much that they won't be able to carry a baby when they actually want one. I know of a few people who have experienced this, and it's very, very sad in the end.

It's YOUR weakness that makes you NEED something to keep you straight. The rest of us are just fine, always have been, thank you very much.

Well said. I can't stand people using religion as an excuse and as forgivness for making poor choices.

They should fess up to irresponsible intercourse and deal with the consequences and woman up to be mothers.

I apologize for the freaks and morons name-calling but the stupidity shown by people with obvious mental issues(belief is "God"), just astounds me. I am sickened every time I read this kind of dribble. How pathetic are people that they can't live with themselves and their thoughts and actions that they have to try to make up for it by worshipping an imaginary being and claiming that if they pray, he will forgive them and it's all okay. It's just rubbish.

Everybody seems to be a little to sensitive...Everthing that comes out of your mouth..some one takes it to another level...EVERONE stop being so sensitive..She didn't say it to hurt Mrs. Walters..The media makes it worst!!! Come on NOW!

Posted by: Lynn | Jul 23, 2008 3:13:37 PM

MemyselfandIrene, are you kidding me right now? There are no levels of Sin? Your kidding right? You don't actually believe that, your not that stupid are you?
