Sincerest Form of Flattery? Tyra as Michelle
August 06, 2008 3:33 PM
Forget posing with potentially deadly animals and strutting down slick catwalks in six-inch heels. This may be Tyra Banks' oddest job ever: Mugging as Barack Obama's wife, Michelle.
The supermodel and TV mogul-in-the-making dressed up as the potential first lady for a photo shoot featured in the September issue of Harper's Bazaar. In one shot, she plays the part of the president's doting wife, standing behind her "husband" (a model who bears a striking resemblance to Obama) in a faux-Oval Office, clad in a navy blue sheath and strand of pearls. In another, she lies beside him in bed, smile on face, book in hand, Harvard sweatshirt on back. (Obama graduated from Harvard Law.)
It's Banks' way of showing her support for the presumptive Democratic nominee and his "hot" honey.
"Michelle Obama, you're one hot mama," she tells the magazine, on newsstands Aug. 19. "With Barack Obama, his becoming president is them becoming president because Michelle was there from the beginning. Without Michelle, he wouldn't be there."
And she wants her home girl to keep it real should she land in the White House.
"I want her to not take herself too seriously," Banks says. "She'd need to know how to take a fierce picture but at the same time be able to eat fried chicken, have grease on her fingers, and be okay with getting photographed like that, too."
Obama's sparked a lot of celebrity attention in recent weeks. Tuesday, Scarlett Johansson told reporters she was embarrassed by media coverage of her so-called "e-mail relationship" with the candidate, saying she "was merely trying to express my delight at Obama's commitment to his campaign" when she revealed in June that they had exchanged e-mails.
He's also the inspiration behind rapper Ludacris' latest song, "Politics: Obama is Here," which include the lines, "Hillary hated on you, so that b---- is irrelevant" and "McCain don't belong in ANY chair unless he's paralyzed." Though Obama sang the rapper's praises in the past, last week, his campaign spokesperson told ABC News' Jake Tapper, "While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics."

I like Tyra, but what was she thinking when she did this photo shoot...I guess she wasn't... another example to show McCain's ads are correct on the 'celebrity goo-goo, ga-ga stuff/

Keep it up Obamabots. Just another nail in your coffin.
People are chocking on all this shoving Obama and his wife down our throats. They're not even officially NOMINATED yet!! Lol.

Jo - you are such a hater. Everyoneof your comments are so nagative. God please help all these angry racist people.

I'm sorry but Tyra is such a racist to black people - yes I know she's black. How does she know that Michelle even likes fried chicken?? And your "home girl," Tyra?? Come on... stop being so racist/stereotypical. You could be a BIG positive role model but instead you like to pus the prejudice that the rest of the media pushes. Over and over again, you disappoint me.

I thought this was a tasteless and hubristic homage. The 24/7 coverage on the Obama's is like being force fed. A big giant turnoff.

Jo,
How do you think other races felt when the white people shoved all these white presdient down our throats. We deal with it. Now you deal with it. I am tried of all this shoving of McShames

I cringed. This was unnecessary silliness. Harper's Bazaar, Tyra Banks, what in the hell are you thinking?!!

I find it funny that they are trying to compare him to J.F.K. This is shot just like the famous photo you see where John Jr. is peeking out from under his fathers desk. Sorry Obama, You are not and will never be J.F.K!!

Eeeks, I agree with Stephanie and a bit with Deb666
How exactly is this "showing support?"
Who'd be the model for Cindy McCain in a photoshoot? Joan Rivers? (shudder)

Tyra - Where's your photo of you all greased up with fried chicken? I haven't had the honor of seeing it yet.

Tyra, Please! No one takes what you have to say serious. So stop trying to ride free on Michelle Obama and Sen Obama's coat tails. Man! What tired T.V stares and singers will do and say in order to try to stay relevant and make money. Tyra if anyone needs to learn how to keep it real, it's you! Don't think black and white people are fooled with your keep it real comment. It's idiots like Tyra and others that keep the stereotypes about black folk alive and give racist folks somthing to laugh about. I guess Tyra thinks all of us black folk think about is eating greasy chicken and shucking and jiving. She sounds like Toby Keith, except she is the flip side to the other side of the ignorant spectrum. Wake up folks eating greasy chicken does not equal real blackness or keeping it real as Ms. Tyra Banks would suggest. What greasy chicken leads to is heart disease and clogged arteries in the African American Community at a much higher rate then any other race of people. Barack and Michelle Obama and many black folks before them have proven that talking good English and striving for excellence is not a White thing or a Black thing, it's a American thing, not eating grease chicken, water Mellon, shucking and jiving and dropping out of school. Peace Love And Hair Grease! Obama08/12

Some of us have not been privileged to have lived during the JFK days but from what I've heard and what I've read and seen, Barack Obama represents the future of American politics that JFK envisioned. Unfortunately people like JFK, Rev. Martin Luther King, and yes even Malcom X were taken away from us by the same hateful mentality that threatens to keep us divided now. Barack Obama is a brilliant man capable of bringing the American people together and people all over the world if WE SO CHOSE TO DO SO! That is why SOME of you racist are so mad, a black man is going to attempt do something no American president has been able to do, and that is bridge that racial divide between white, black and brown folks that has separated us for so long. That scares the hell out of some of you racist! What if Obama is succesfull of making black people think they can be own equeall footing as whites? LOL! I'ts already happening accross the United States and the world. You self hating brown and black people and white racist seem to love to use the excuse, that the reason you will not vote for Sen.Obama is because he does not have enough experience, he a elitist/ code words meaning he is a uppity n!gger or he hasn't been in the Senate long enough or the really tired excuses you white racist Pumas and self hating brown and black Pumas love to use is that Barack Obama, and the DNC stole the Primary Election from little miss poor Hillary Clinton. The real reason is that Sen Obama is a black man, that showed the intelligence and intellect that it takes to govern this great country we call America. As far as Hillary, she may be a racist she may not be, I don't know. What I can say is that with certainty is that Hillary and Bill tried to exploit white people and black people with the race card in order to get votes and win the Primaries. How sad! Maybe Obama used race to his advantage too, if he did, which I don't think he did, then he did a good job hiding it but Hillary Clinton made it clear to the ear in Pennsylvania, West Virgina and Kentucky the she had no problem using race to win the primarys against Sen Barack Obama. Talk about your Karol Rove tactics!

Come on, folks! Get over yourselves! It's a photo of an aging model, and it has nothing to do with the Obama campaign, the McCain campaign, Paris Hilton, or any other fluff that ends up in front of the camera. Use a little discretion folks and remember that not everything that ends up in front of the camera is real. If you want to know the truth about the Obama family or the campaign, a Vanity Fair photo shoot is not the place to look for it. Sheesh.

Yep Orlando - just what we're tired of .. if we don't vote for Obama we're racist! We got that a long time ago .. doofus! Got anything else to add - cmon let's here it!

Tyra...what on earth were you thinking? Stick to what you do best (ANTM). I don't like all these celebrities getting involved in presidential campaigns. I think what the end result will be is that the celebs will lose fans not help get "this man" elected. I can't stand seeing him and his wife on TV or anywhere else. I just change the channel or look the other way.
