Ed McMahon: 'I Am Now Officially a Rapper'

September 26, 2008 1:44 PM

Ap_mcmahon_02_080925_mn Straight outta Carson, Ed McMahon's giving rap veterans a run for their money.

Or rather, he's telling Americans to make a run for their money. The 85-year-old former Johnny Carson sidekick stars in two videos for FreeCreditReport.com, spitting rhymes, riding with honies and rocking a leopard print tracksuit.

"I’ve had problems, why not utilize my problems to do something good? I think it’ll help other people around my country," McMahon told ABCNews.com.

In July, McMahon made headlines when he defaulted on a $4.8 million mortgage on his six-bedroom Beverly Hills mansion. Donald Trump came to his rescue in August, when he announced that he would purchase the aging comic's home from Countrywide Financial and lease it to McMahon, thereby avoiding foreclosure.

As any rapper will attest, the best rhymes hail from hard times. Judging from his lyrics, McMahon seems to agree:

"When I retired, I was famous/I had money and glory/I bought a house for 6 mil./I thought nothing could touch me/Until my credit went south, and debt started to crunch me/Next thing I know, instead of playing gin rummy, I was scrambling just to make ends meet/It wasn't funny."

But now, working again, McMahon's on the rebound, and counting himself among the ranks of Los Angeles' rap elite.

"Me as a rapper is kind of a wild thing," he mused. "I can sing the blues -- I’ve been known to sing the blues on many occasion. Rapping is difficult but somehow we nailed it down, and I am now officially a rapper."

Dude! This is awesome. I think my hero Ron Paul could get more airtime if he did some raps too. Maybe a rap on the fiscal insanity of both the populace of this country and the ruling class.

It's "homies," not "honies." I hope that was just a typo. :)

I think it is honies, not homies. They mean, pretty women aka (Honey's). Maybe the spelling could have been better

Awesome NOT. Ed has stooped to a new low rapping for this company. The whole reason for their existance is to capitalize on, and take advantage of, those who mistake them for the government mandated site where you get your credit reports for free. You do not get that from these people. Instead you get automatically signed up for a very expensive service that you have to opt out of.

Nice of the Donald to buy Ed's house.

Tim, put yourself in Ed's shoes. We should be glad that someone gave him a job at his age.

Posted by: Tim | Sep 26, 2008 3:00:13 PM

Anon- No, he meant "honies", as in the plural of "honey".

Can't wait to see this comercial. I love the frecreditreport.com comercials, there funny and informative. Some people are paying for credit reports when they do not have to.

Posted by: redd | Sep 26, 2008 3:27:02 PM

Wow.. I bet he would have never looked at the honies or homies had he not come so close to losing every thing... Life has a way of bringing a person back down to earth.. I'm black, and I think the whole thing stinks.. If you were too good for me when you had something, then I am too good for you when you have nothing..

Tim....
They clearly disclose that the free credit scores and report automatically enroll you in the credit monitoring service for $14.95/mo. They also clearly disclose on the main page of their website that you can opt out within 90 days w/o charge. They also clearly state that they are not affiliated with the annual free credit report program. They also provide a link on their main page that sends you to the annualcreditreport.com website.

It sounds like you didn't read the basic terms of service and you may be a little bitter. Anyone who feels "taken advantage of" should instead feel "stupid" for misunderstanding what you were signing up for.

Who whould have thunk it? Ed McMahon rapping with "honies"!

Posted by: LongT | Sep 26, 2008 3:51:46 PM

"No one on the corner has Swagger like Ed! Swagger like Ed, Swagger like Ed!"

Posted by: DJ Cold Cuts | Sep 26, 2008 4:47:03 PM

Ed...
No, I'm not bitter at all. I knew they were a sham from commercial one. I know the site where you truly get your credit report free is annualcreditreport.com

You, on the other hand, sound like a shill trying to excuse the actions of this sham company that reels in "stupid" people with their cute commercials. Sure they disclose all those things, just clearly enough to avoid running afoul of the law. Let's get real though, you KNOW as well as I do that they don't exist to sell those services to people that want those services, they exist soley for the money they grab from the "stupid."

Posted by: Tim | Sep 26, 2008 4:47:55 PM

Sorry, meant Joe

Posted by: Tim | Sep 26, 2008 4:48:48 PM

Has Ed taken leave of his senses? Truly, he is a loon!

You would think the entertainment industry would step up for Ed - how about the big mouth Jerry Lewis? As far as Trump goe's he low balled the price (big Man).

They can have a fund raiser at 32,000 a plate but Ed gets nothing. This wrong -and everyone knows it.

How do these people sleep. The entertainment crowd where everyone loves everyone is all an Act. They are just a heartless bunch.

Ed kicks arse. Donald is pimpin and I say the whole rest of the entertainment world should open their pocketbooks for Ed. Otherwise, shut the hell up about how much you care for so-and-so. Ed as a rapper...who'da thunk?! Go Ed, Go Ed!
