Letterman's Latest Victim: Anne Hathaway
October 01, 2008 2:00 PM
Late-night comedy hosts usually make cracks about current events, pander to guests promoting new projects, and call it a wrap.
But lately David Letterman has been lashing out instead of sticking to the script. Last week, he railed on Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who canceled his "Late Show" appearance to purportedly jet to Washington and deal with the economic crisis, but instead ended up staying in New York to tape an interview with Katie Couric. Last night, Letterman picked a new target: Anne Hathaway.
On the show to promote her new movie, "Rachel Getting Married," the actress found herself getting grilled about her ex-boyfriend, Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri, who claimed to have connections to the Vatican and pleaded guilty this month to 14 counts of money laundering, fraud and conspiracy relating to his real estate ventures. No doubt, judging from her cracking voice and cringing frame, she was caught off guard -- Hathaway hasn't spoken publicly about her split from Follieri or his legal drama, and probably didn't anticipate pouring her heart out to a late-night comedian.
Below, excerpts from Hathaway and Letterman's exceedingly awkward conversation. Was he out of line, and how do you think she handled it?
LETTERMAN: "Let's talk about this ugliness that I alluded to earlier. … You meet somebody, you fall in love and maybe it turns out that person wasn't all that great."
HATHAWAY: "Maybe."
LETTERMAN: "Did you have any hints that there was a problem?"
HATHAWAY: "You know what I don't want to go into the specifics but … I will say that you do have to give me credit because as far as relationships crashing and burning goes, come on. I did pretty great. I mean scorch that earth! I'm an all-or-nothing sort of girl."
...
LETTERMAN: "Is he in jail now?"
HATHAWAY: "[Nodding yes] Mm-hmm. Do you want to know his shoe size too?"
LETTERMAN: "Will he be in jail for a while?"
HATHAWAY: "You know, I really don't know anything, the specifics about that. I'm just promoting my movies, living my life -- I got to keep my dog! That's the most important thing."
...
LETTERMAN: "You have your self-esteem, that's important too."
HATHAWAY: "Uh, thanks, I had my self-esteem before! … But you know what, I'm very happy."
LETTERMAN: "Now you tell me when it's time to quit, OK? Because I have a couple more questions. How long did you know the guy?"
HATHAWAY: "[Gagging noise] Uh, we dated for four years."
LETTERMAN: "Was there ever like, stuff missing out of your purse?"
HATHAWAY: "[Head in hands, laughing] Paul -- how you doing over there?"
PAUL SHAFFER ["Late Show" musical director]: "If I could just … what he's trying to say is, did the guy ever come up to you at anytime and say, 'Hey, I'm the pope?'"
…
LETTERMAN: "Was the relationship finished before there was trouble?"
HATHAWAY: "Yes. We were over for a bit … There were conversations afterward, but the relationship was absolutely done. I was on a flight from Australia, coming back, so that was a fun call to get upon landing."
LETTERMAN: "Oh my God … well, here [bumps fists with Hathaway, cuts to commercial]"

I "used" to be a huge Letterman fan...what a man, classy comedian, done so much for late night tv. Of late, though, I have to wonder what he is up to. Sometimes it's funny....what he did with Paris hilton was classic and hilarious. But his treatment of mcCain was inappropriate and uncalled for. REgardless of his polictics or endorsement, this man is a war hero.
Just wondering, as the question I ask of all media, would Dave had treated Obama that way? Probably not, as with everyone, say a little negative thing about Obama, and you are instantly a racist. We are electing our president by affirmative action, and it makes me sad that we have been forced into this horrible predicament of endangering our safety and security for the sake of political correctness.
I have lost respect for Dave.

This is off topic but sad. I went to school today and here on one side kids singing Obama song and on other side kids holding signs that boycott All news
channels!! Now these are 8th & 9th graders. Do you realize news channels they are teaching parents and grandparents to go on line to FOX to watch news. You'd better get fair and balanced.

Pushing a running theme/gag has always been Letterman's stock in trade. Looks like standard fare to me.

I stopped watching Dave a couple of years ago. He had no use for kids until he had one and then he became "Father knows best." His dry wit has turned to bitter, sniping, mean sarcasm. I am sick to death of big bucks entertainers thinking that they are world class geniuses telling us poor schmucks how to think, how to act, how to vote, etc. The only thing more pathetic are the "fans" who buy into this "entertainment" drivel.

He is asking the right questions and what he did to McCain was awasesome., He desrved it. War hero. Interesting didn't he cave in and sign a document admitting lies. Not much hero there anyone can be kidnapped. hero is not caving into pressure. Oh and Go Obama from a white guy. We are electing our president based upon wanting change not another bush wannbe. Oh and I'm a former republican who proudly endorses obama. Dave keep it up, it keeps it interesting

I agree with the last two comments on Letterman. I recognize that political jabs & occasional snarkiness is fair game, but lately, Letterman has been taking his show WAAAY too seriously. The prolonged sniping at McCain was inappropriate & self-absorbed.Our nation is in a serious crisis, and I don't want to see either Presidential candidate sitting & yukking it up on a late night entertainment show. As well, I could care less for most Hollywood celebrities, but the interrogation of Hathaway seemed rude and gratuitous, as if Dave wanted to make a headline the next day. I've been tuning out earlier and earlier lately, and this morning I decided I just won't watch the show anymore.

Dave is mean..Jay is funny..easy choice at the end of the day !

Said it before. Will say it again. Letterman is not funny. He has lost his compass. Time to retire before he pulls a truly outrageous stunt for which he will not be forgiven. Why destroy what was until recently a terrific entertainment career. And for what? Just some temporary insanity? CBS would do well to corral Leno, a real class act.

Why do we care about this? David Letterman is doing what he is doing because he needs to climb in the ratings, plain and simple. He's an entertainer. Nothing else.

Just another case of TV personalities both on regular TV and cable trying to create news or sway people to their ideology. Also applies to newspapers and press. Stop telling us how we should feel and report only meaningful facts and not trash. We are smart and can make our own decisions.

Hey-
Just 'cause Dave has lost it doesn't make Leno funny. Never was. Never will be.

The only way to stop these mean-spirited shows and "celebrities" is to hit them where it counts - their wallet. Stop watching their shows, stop going to their movies.
Of course, actors and other "celebrities" have a right to their opinions - they are human, after all - but I'm getting pretty sick of them using their access to publicity to pound on people they don't like. Those dried up, bitter women on The View, Meg Ryan, Will Smith's wife, Letterman, as well as MSNBC (better known as the Obama network) have moved beyond supporting a candidate to expressing nasty, hateful things about the opposition.
I, for one, will be happy when people come to their senses and make sure shows like Letterman, The View and the "journalists" at MSNBC are off the air because no one will listen to them.

I think that she handled it pretty good and he is a jerk for asking these kind of questions.

What am I missing?
Posted by: Steve | Oct 1, 2008 2:59:25 PM
First Joey - I am also an Obama supporter.
But for you to discredit McCain's heroism because he signed a document while in captivity under severe torture is ridiculous. Regardless of his politics, he is a war hero.

There you go Letterman...ostracize everyone who may or may not go on your show and see how long your career is around. If there's no one to interview, there's no need to put your stupid a** on air! Keep going! Make my wish come true!!

Dave is old yesterday news. I stopped watching him 5 years ago, but had watched him from the start until then.
He is a bitter liberal man who thinks he knows more than the avg American.
Sad. He use to be funny before he became political.
