On 'SNL,' Fey Nails Palin Again

October 05, 2008 3:18 PM

Despise her as they may, if there's one thing most Democrats will probably miss should their party win come Nov. 4, it's Tina Fey's impression of Sarah Palin.

Once again, Fey killed it, parodying the Republican vice presidential candidate's debate performance on "Saturday Night Live." Queen Latifah as moderator Gwen Ifill and Jason Sudeikis as Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden proved worthy foils, but Fey stole the show.

She winked. She dropped the m-bomb ("maverick") at least a dozen times. She whipped out a flute and inquired about the talent portion of the debate.

Below, choice moments from last night's skit:

Fey, meeting Sudeikis: "Hey, can I call you Joe? ... Because I practiced a couple zingers where I call you Joe."

Latifah: "We would like to remind our audience that due to the historically low expectations for governor Palin, were she simply to do an adequate job tonight, at no point cry, faint, run out of the building or vomit, you should consider the debate a tie."

Latifah: "How will you solve the financial crisis being a maverick?"
Fey: "You know we're gonna take every aspect of the crisis and look at it and then we're going to ask ourselves, 'What would a maverick do in this situation?' And then, you know, we'll do that."

Fey: "I'd also like to give a shout out to the third graders of Gladys Woods elementary who were so helpful to me in my debate prep."

Fey, on global warming: "Gwen, we don't know if this climate-change-who-zie-whats-it is man made or if it's just a natural part of the End of Days."

Fey, on taxes: "We are not afraid to get mavericky in there."

Fey, on gay marriage: "I believe marriage is meant to be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers."

Fey, on being accused of pandering to Florida voters: "From a very young age, my two greatest loves were always Jews and Cuban food."

Fey, holding a flute: "Are we not doing the talent portion?"

Sudeikis' closing remarks: "My goal tonight was a simple one: To come up here and at no point seem like a condescending, egomaniacal bully. And I'm gonna be honest -- I think I nailed it."

Fey's closing remarks: "And for those Joe six packs out there playing a drinking game at home: Maverick." [Pretends to crack open and chug a cold one.]

If this kind of "fun" was being poked at Obama or even his wife, they'd be screaming racism from the rafters.

The media needs to be told - this is no way to treat a lady. Shame on all of you

Country Voter - you're right. I'm highly entertained by Obama's intelligence and smart policies. I smile every day at the thought that this great man will turn the country around. I'm glad it's entertaining to you, as it is to me, that this country won't be despised by the world anymore.

Tina Fey will be here long after this election. She's a comic star writer, producer and actress. Anyone who thinks Palin should be a heart beat away from the most powerful position in American politics to deal with the heads of state she said herself have no respect for women.... is just not thinking clearly. I shutter at the thought of her smirking and winking at middle east leaders..or Putin. Lord have mercy on us all.

Jill, if I told you once, I told you a thousand times - STAY OFF MY COMPUTER.

Now: treating a woman differently is sexism. And the only reason they're treating Obama better is because he's not a whopping moron like Palin.

What's really scary.

when the comedienne playing the candidate

is more equipped to be the Vice President than the actual candidate herself...

it's true

as far as financial management...Fay has had more challenges than Palin who walked into a gubanatorial office when the oil economy dependent state was seeing the ability to garner a financial windfall (through an oabam policy belief) from oil companies...you know the ones who paid for Palin's inauguration.

and as far as more up on the issues that are facing us

I don't think there is a doubt in anyone's mind that Fey has a massive advance on Palin as far as grasp of these issues that she ...has to read off cue cards.

scary scary scary

seriously

the sad part is that fey is dead on. not as a caricature. as the real thing. palin is absurd as a choice for vp. absolutely absurd.

SNL is disgusting, disrespectful, sarcastic, rude, obnoxious, full of snears and mockery. Basically, the show is a loser. Why they think that they are relevant to this country is beyond me. They absolutely have no concept of our country's and the world's situation. It is a dangerous world we live in. How does SNL expect the rest of the world to respect the US and our leaders if our own citizens can be so disrespectful.
I don't think Republicans or Democrats should be portayed in the manner that SNL uses. Only no-talented losers resort to SNL's tactics. Truly talented people can keep their humor above board and meaningful.

And I suppose you're some kind of political expert and can make that call?

My comment was to Emma

:-)

emma,
I think you are right. The fact that Fey is so dead-on makes the whole thing halarious. I will certainly miss it when Obama becomes President.

I THINK PALIN WANTS TO BAILOUT ALL BECAUSE OF TINA FAY.

Posted by: SALLY | Oct 5, 2008 4:47:17 PM

I love it! Shes got amazing talent. She seems JUST like sarah. Some people coming into my house actually thought it was her because Sarah is really like that. Its AMAZING!!!

This is Tina Fey's 15 seconds of fame. She had better enjoy it while it lasts as it is only a fad.

-----------------------------------

Really? This is the same Tina Fey who just won 3 Emmys for her REGULAR job on "30 Rock", a show on which she not only appears as an actor, but for which she is also a writer and producer.

She didn't need the SNL/Palin gig. SNL asked her to do it because alot of people noticed how much she looks like her, and SNL is known for political parodies.

And last I heard, Tina Fey can't wait for this gig to end on Nov 5th.

Fed Up, You vote for W.? Hes the one whos supposed to be serious, and he comes across as a joke. If your worried about how the rest of the world sees us, then you surely arent going to vote for McCain and have another 4 years of W. The world views us as a joke because of him. The world knows that SNL is HUMOR, and the presidency isnt supposed to be clownish buffoons like Bush/Cheney=McCain's/Failin

Posted by: Jo | Oct 5, 2008 5:02:19 PM

Yeah..it is costly. Did you get a load of that botox job on Bidens forehead?

That's probably why at his age of 66 he still has a mortgage, and why he gives so little to charity....but he demands that we be patriotic and give it up for taxes!!!

If Tina Fey is as, or more qualified to be VP then Mrs. Palin, then the same could be said for the actor portraying Mr. Biden.

20. CONSTITUTION & VP: Biden gaffed when he stated, “He has no authority relative to the Congress” — other than to vote in the Senate when there is a tie. Article I, section 3, states that the VP is President of the Senate. He (or she) has no vote unless there is a tie, but holds that position regardless. At various times in history, the President of the Senate has wielded signficant power by controlling procedure in the Senate. Nowhere in the Constituion is the VP’s authority limited, or ‘defined’ other than this one mention of the VP’s role (which in any case contradicts Biden’s assertion that the VP has no authority in the legislature).

21.U.S. KICKED HEZBOLLAH OUT OF LEBANON: Biden lied. Complete fabrication.

Just 2 of 26 lies, or gaffes Biden made at the VP debate.

Fed Up, Believe Me Europe knows about parody of the leaders, they have been doing it since before we were a country and they completely understand that its humor.

Posted by: JJ | Oct 5, 2008 5:05:06 PM

It's just so easy when trailer trash tries to become something she's not.
The target is so big, it's really hard
not to shoot at it and hit it in the center.
This woman is no more qualified to be VP and probably Pres., when McCain goes down. She has no idea what is going on and seems to be proud of it. Just the way the Republicans like their women.

Sally, SNL is not a program to "read" as you said. It is on tv, therefore it is available to "watch". I don't waste my time on that garbage. I find plenty of humor in this world without stooping to the tactics of SNL and others like that.
