Brad Pitt Opens Up about Fatherhood

November 19, 2008 1:10 PM

Nm_pitt_kids_oprah_081119_main_4Brad Pitt may appear to lead the glamorous red carpet life of a celebrity but at home his six kids keep him real.

“I’m hard as nails,” he said on an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that airs today. “I’m impervious to poo, snot, urine, vomit. You can’t get me. You cannot break me down. In the beginning it was like, ‘Oh God, how do they vomit that much?’ Now it’s like, ‘Look, that’s half a hot dog.’”

More serious, he added, “(Having children is) a great mirror for yourself, for how you are, how you react. They make me a better person. It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever taken on. I can’t imagine my life without them.”

Pitt opened up to Winfrey about his life as a father while promoting his upcoming film, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

He talked about newborn twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline – saying the boy looks like him and the girl, like mother Angelina Jolie – and how he and Jolie initially tried to manage without hired help.

“In the beginning, it was mainly us doing both shifts,” Pitt said. Now, he said, “We have help in the night because we want to be there for the others ones in the day. But not every night.”

“Hats off to all the parents out there,” Pitt added.

Asked by a viewer if he’s ever been alone with all six children, he admitted, “Four is usually my limit on my own, so far. I hope to advance.”

Pitt doesn’t shirk from being the disciplinarian either, except when it comes to the girls. “The girls do no wrong,” he said. “The boys I have to pull them up. We have the time out chair. I end up in it.”

He’s also given up on quick outings with the kids. “We don’t go to the mall. It’s like a half an hour just to get everyone buckled in and make sure they’ve got their snacks, and Z.Z. (3-year-old Zahara) has got a blanket and Shiloh’s got her silky. Angie’s militant about it. She’s right on top of it. Thank God, because I’m always forgetting something.”

Pitt also couldn’t resist telling funny stories about his children. He said 2-year-old Shiloh’s latest quirk is “she only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it’s a Peter Pan thing. So we’ve got to call her John. ‘Shi, do you want …’ – ‘John. I’m John.’ And then I’ll say, ‘John, would you like some orange juice?’ And she goes, ‘No!’ So, you know, it’s just that kind of stuff that's cute to parents, and it's probably really obnoxious to other people.”

At the top of the show, Winfrey asked the question that has been the latest subject of the rumor mill: will Pitt and Jolie have more children? “Probably,” he said.

When Winfrey told him, “you seem happier than you’ve ever been,” Pitt replied, “I daresay.”

Pitt is not the only celebrity talking up the joys of parenthood. Nicole Kidman, who gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose four months ago, suggested that she may take a break from acting to expand her family.

“In terms of my future as an actor, I don't know,” she said last night at the premiere of her new film, “Australia.”  “I've had some great opportunities and I may just choose to have some more children.”

If her greying roots were any indication, clearly Kidman has more important things on her mind.

YOU GUYS ARE A BUNCH OF HATERS!! LET THEM BE!! HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF PEOPLE YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WERE TALKING LIKE THIS ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY?

Posted by: AAAHHH | Nov 19, 2008 3:45:29 PM

people on this board who are bashing the Pitt-Jolie clan are just jealous racist trailer-park trash who cant stand to see kids who arent white having a better life than they are.
I dont see anything wrong with Brad's account of his family life, the way he is describing daily routine like going to the mall and kid-vomit and all sounds exactly like it could come out of my house or any other average american family.

i'm sure if they would've adopted some white/american kids you'd be bashing on them twice as bad...perhaps even calling them racist

Posted by: ugh | Nov 19, 2008 3:53:39 PM

okay tom let's not get racist

Posted by: ,.. | Nov 19, 2008 3:54:49 PM

Tom: You are depraved! I don't think anyone has a problem with these children..they have a problem with the d*mbasses who were allowed to adopt them! Go crawl back to YOUR trailer!

I wouldn't like to have the life of Brat Pit with six children. not because I don't like kids but because it must be complicated.

tom--I guess if calling people racist is good enough to get a President elected, it should be good enough to get people to watch Oprah. You are a clown with a very limited vocabulary.

Tom:::: REALITY CHECK:::: not just white people live in America

Posted by: ahem | Nov 19, 2008 4:06:41 PM

My guess is the snarky comment about Ms. Kidman's roots was intended to convey the idea she may be staying away from hair dye because she's trying to conceive. Possibly the cattiest way I've ever seen the idea floated in print.

No amount of money or celebrity would make me ever want 6 children. I wish all the best to the Jolie-Pitt family and any other family who choose that, but it is just not for me and my husband. Could we handle it, yes. Should we, NO.

I think the comment at the end of the article was tacky and the writer displayed poor judgment with that insulting one-liner about Nicole Kidman at the end of the article. I also think actors all put a spin on their personal lives to make them seem more "normal". You guys need to stop feeding off each other with your mean natured comments.

Posted by: marieg | Nov 19, 2008 4:10:41 PM

The comments on here are out of this world. I have 3 kids and if I could have 3 nanies, I DAMN WELL WOULD! Each one of them needs their own attentions and it's hard to divide my time, homework with kids 4, 5 and 6 years old, all takes aton of time and each is doing something different. One of their Adopted kids lost their own mother to AIDS and they thought she would have it too when they adopted her. PALEEZE get over yourselves. Brad and Angelina are selfless ppl that spend a TON of their OWN money on causes in third world countries. Why there and not in the US? I would say because they need it more! You might also ask Bush why he spent so much money helping AIDS relief in Africa if you have an issue with helping others.

Please. How stupid does he think we are? They have SIX nannies not to mention maids and cooks! If he has so much as changed a diaper, warmed a bottle or picked up a drop of spittle I'll buy the Brooklyn Bridge.

I have four kids, and I can tell you that taking on 6 kids is by no means a publicity stunt. Both of these people say that their kids have changed their lives. Why can't people just be happy for them? They are in a position to love and provide for them. I do wish they were married, but that doesn't mean that they are bad parents. They are sharing their lives, their love, and their time. Bravo for them. I wish more parents did the same. I'm sure that some of us sitting at our computers reading this comment page are guilty of not doing everything right with our kids. Let them be. Stop buying the rag-mags and watching trash-talk on tv, and the Jolie-Pitt clan won't be on the news any more.

Geez, the reason they brought up Nicole's gray roots has NOTHING to do with sexism! DUH! Most women stop dying their hair when they are trying to get pregnant or discover they ARE pregnant... remember how Julia Roberts came to the Oscars and everyone commented on her roots and how she must be pregnant? Low and behold, next thing you know, she's announcing she's preggers. THAT is why they bring up the roots... DUH!

its best to help parents take care of their own kids if they are promoting foundations and charities.
This would be the best help.
These adopted kids have families and relatives.
Why not help them?

Why so much controversy over someone else's life and kids? Ain't my life, ain't my kids, ain't my bizness, ain't yours neither!

Tom: I'm with you. There's a lot of jealous people out there. Why don't you all just admit it--they have it all, and they have that right. Kudo's to Jolie-Pitt clan. The rest of you work on your own backyard.
