David & David: What to Expect from 'Idol' Alums Debut CDs
November 11, 2008 3:50 PM
"American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta's debut album comes out today; "American Idol" champ David Cook's debut album arrives Nov. 18. While the two are such completely different artists that it's unfair to directly compare their music, many "Idol" fans will no doubt want to purchase both records -- so here's a handy preview of what you'll get from each David's debut:
Album Title
-Cook: Self-titled
-Archuleta: Self-titled
Defining Characteristics
-Cook: impassioned vocals, confessional songwriting, big pop-rock riffs
-Archuleta: impeccable vocals, professional songwriting, ballads and midtempos
Song themes
-Cook: the effects of fame, his love for his family, his brother's battle with cancer, relationship difficulties
-Archuleta: falling in love, contemplating falling in love, being in love, losing love
Songs on CD written or co-written by David
-Cook: all but two (not counting bonus tracks)
-Archuleta: two (not counting bonus tracks)
Notable Songwriters Co-Writing/Contributing Material
-Cook: Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave, Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra, ex-Evanescence member David Hodges and Zac Maloy of the Nixons
-Archuleta: JC Chasez of 'N SYNC, new "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi, '80s pop star-turned-hit-songwriter Robbie Nevil and ex-Evanescence member David Hodges
Does It Include a Song Performed on "American Idol"?
-Cook: yes; "the Time of My Life," but only as a bonus track
-Archuleta: yes; "Angels" by Robbie Williams
Does it rock?
-Cook: Yes, especially the track "Bar-Ba-Sol"
-Archuleta: No, but it's not supposed to
Is it any good?
-Cook: Yes. Fans who loved the "Idol" champ for his raspy, sexy voice and emotional performances on the show will not be disappointed, and the songwriting gives plenty of insight into exactly what he's experienced during the last 15 months.
-Archuleta: Yes. Fans who adored Archie's near-flawless vocals and earnest performances on "Idol" will not be disappointed, and his ability to handle this contemporary material proves he's more than just a balladeer.

Oh Boy!
...the writer did not pit the David vs. David schlock at us, but some fans on here are still going on and on about it....why so mean? what gives?
If you are not into Archuleta's music, fine, but then why attack him personally?
I am an Archie fan, but I would NEVER dis Cook personally, he is a funny and interesting guy. I wish both David's well!
Archuleta's album is a pure gem! Money well spent, I absolutely love every single song and bonus track, no word of a lie....he is going to be a legend!

I believe you missed an important co-writer on Archuleta's album: Daniel Bedingfield. And no, Archie's isn't supposed to rock. It's a pop album. I know it's your job to twist articles and make them fit your own personal taste, but at least get the facts straight. This article does not make you look particularly intelligent, to put it mildly.

Over them both, if David's choice of girlfriend is enough to turn you off him then I don't think you were ever really a fan of his music in the first place. If you cared about the music, what does his personal life matter?
And abby I totally disagree with you about David Archuleta. I am a Cook fan first but I enjoy David A. too and I think he has a beautiful voice. He wasn't my cup of tea on Idol but after meeting him this past summer and seeing what a nice kid he is and hearing him sing live he really impressed me. So I don't think its just his age and baby face that makes him popular. The kid has some pipes.

Nice review about both Davids. I'm not a fan of David A's kind of music, nevertheless, he is talented in his own right. I am a forever loyal fan of David Cook though. I saw him last night at the Do the Wright Thing gala and he was terrific. What I like about him most is that I think he offers a complete package of remarkable talent, looks and personality. I just hope all the fame and fortune don't change his personality.

I heard David Cooks album last night and it is absolutely amazing. I hope it does well on the charts when it comes out on Tuesday.

I have not heard Archeluta's music because i don't care for pop, but he has a great voice and i wish him success. I have listened to the preview of Cook's music and i love it! I can't wait to get this on Tuesday

seriously? Jazz, you don't like David's Declaration on SNL? then what about his performance on Jay Leno on 14th? it was fantastic. Everybody was blown away. the crowd was amazed, Jay was "wowed", and Miley gave him a thumb up.
and the new CD is beyond great! sorry if you miss it just because of his choice of girlfriend.

As far as the review goes, you did a good job of fairly analyzing both albums without prejudice.
I would like to say, however, that the personal lives of EITHER of these artists should have nothing to do with the quality of their music. Whether the artist has a girlfriend who is not of your choosing or chooses NOT to have a girlfriend currently, should have no bearing and has no place in an album review comment.
Based on their talent, I am sure that both Davids will go on to have great careers. Both have singles that are sure to be platinum VERY shortly and although the albums are very different in content, they will both be a success.
