ABC News Update on Hastert Story

May 24, 2006 10:21 PM

Richard Esposito and Rhonda Schwartz contributed to this report.

Despite a flat denial from the Department of Justice, federal law enforcement sources tonight said ABC News accurately reported that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is "in the mix" in the FBI investigation of corruption in Congress.

Speaker Hastert said tonight the story was "absolutely untrue" and has demanded ABC News retract its story.

Law enforcement sources told ABC News that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff has provided information to the FBI  about Hastert and a number of other members of Congress that have broadened the scope of the investigation. Sources would not divulge details of the Abramoff’s information.

"You guys wrote the story very carefully but they are not reading it very carefully," a senior official said.

One focus involves a letter Hastert wrote in 2003 urging the Secretary of the Interior to block an Indian casino that would have competed with tribes represented by Abramoff.

The letter was written within days of a fund-raiser held for Hastert at Abramoff’s restaurant in Washington.  Federal campaign records show more than $26,000 was raised at the time from Abramoff and his clients.

Hastert has denied doing anything unlawful and says he has a long history of opposing certain types of Indian casinos.

ABC’s law enforcement sources said the Justice Department denial was meant only to deny that Hastert was a formal "target" or "subject" of the investigation.

"Whether they like it or not, members of Congress, including Hastert, are under investigation," one federal official said tonight.

The investigation of Hastert’s relationship with Abramoff is in the early stages, according to these officials, and could eventually conclude that Abramoff’s information was  unfounded.

Officials said the next logical investigative step would be for the FBI to seek a wide range of documents from the members of Congress named by Abramoff, including letters and business documents.

A spokesman for Hastert said the office had received no subpoenas or requests for documents.

I think we need to start o poll to see how long before Brian Ross is forced to retract this story and join Dan Rather in "retirement" land

Dear ABC:

Regarding the story of an investigation of Speaker Dennis Hastert, anytime unnamed and anonymous sources are used today the story is automatically lacking credibility and creates suspicion of ABC manufacturing a story. If you want credibility with today's news consumer, you must give us names of comfirming sources or withdraw the story.

Brian,

You are doing great work. I LOVE YOU!

Hilarious! Let's see if I got this right:

1. ABC News lies, by saying Hastert is under investigation.

2. Justice Department calls ABC News on their lie, saying flat out that Haster in "not under investigation".

3. ABC News sticks by their lie! They quote the famous unnamed sources as saying Hastert IS "under investigation", even though that is directly contradicted by the Justice Department.

Too funny! Is it any wonder why nobody relly believes anything the MSM writes any more?

I wondered immediately why all of a suddent, Hastert showed concern about Constitutional rights. Now you know why.

It looks like ABC News has joined CBS News in publishing a false and unsubstantiated story in order to smear a Rupublican. The Liberal left media, such as ABC NEWS, will stop at nothing to publish fiction in order to promote their agenda.

The DOJ could do us all a favor by simply issuing a list of GOP Senators and Congresmen who are not 'in the mix' with this Abramoff scandal. It would probably be a very short list - should not take long to compile.

Well, if Hastert isn;t in on the Abramoff gig, they should get him on his illict ties to the Turkish government via the American Turkish Council and Americans at that nonprofit serving as agents of the Turkish government. Brent Scowcroft runs the ATC and its Board members/dues paying members consist of all the major US defense contractors, former US Congress members, et al. Joe Wilson met Valerie Plame whilst at an ATC function. US/Turkish ATC members have been involved in illict technology transfer used for WMD's. Finally, Sibel Edmonds ran across this info which is why she is locked down by the US State Secrets gag order. Hastert, et al are in the mix there for sure.

just to make sure no one can substantiate what they actually wrote as opposed to the headline they're not quoting, they've removed the article from the link. false but accurate?

I plan to check back here and see if the right wingers who are oh so sure that the story was a damned lie retract their statements if it turns out to be accurate...

Dear Joe, James, frhicks and other doubters and trolls,

Why would you believe one word that comes out of Alberto Gonzales's office? Can you cite an example of when Brian Ross has fabricated a story? One example of Brian Ross's integrity being questioned? Alberto Gonzales has repeatedly lied to the American people and yet your first instinct is to believe him. The proud 29%-ers of this country never cease to amaze me.

Posted by: Ashy Larry | May 24, 2006 10:52:37 PM

Santorum is probably in the mix too.

Posted by: Patriotic Peep | May 24, 2006 10:53:17 PM

They'll cry witchhunt.

Posted by: Patriotic Peep | May 24, 2006 10:54:16 PM

ZAP: they still think WMD's were found in Iraq and that Hussein's team flew the planes into the WTC.

Posted by: Patriotic Peep | May 24, 2006 10:55:10 PM

the original is still available, linked from elsewhere. weasel wording: "Federal officials say the Congressional bribery investigation now includes Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, based on information from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government.

Part of the investigation involves a letter Hastert...."

we didn't say he was "a target" or that he was "under investigation". we just said it in a way to imply it to the nth degree. guess it depends on what "is" is

Posted by: blue | May 24, 2006 10:57:26 PM

This leak is just to make sure Hassert buckles under and makes sure the House passes GWs immigration plan. It will go away until the next time Hassert makes ole GW mad.

Posted by: Stan | May 24, 2006 10:58:44 PM

MSM must get rid of the bribery story about one of their own, Democrat Congressman William Jefferson. How better than run this story about Hastert? Also, notice MSM started up the Cheney testifying story again?

I wonder what ever happened to ole Harry Reid's involvement with the lobbyist and casinos on Indian land? We sure don't hear much about that?

Posted by: Awan | May 24, 2006 11:10:20 PM

Hey right-wingers, without the MSM, people would still think there are WMD's in Iraq, people would still believe the lies of the theocrats (who pandered to religious voters, fully knowing they couldn't get anything accomplished, such as the Discriminatory Fed. Marr. Amend, which will certainly fail since 2/3's of Congress would not vote for it). Go ahead, keep on believing the lies of Hannity, Limbaugh, and the Xenophobic Savage. Remember, the radio is about "opinions" not about "facts" which the MSM is about. But then again, you 29 % will never get it, so it's not worth the time. Thanks for the great work ABC. We don't need neo-fascists telling us whether MSM is good or bad. Just wait till 2006 Elections, when you GOP right-wing fanatics get booted out of office. Remember what happened to the Dover School Board Dist? They voted for Intelligent Design, and EVERY SINGLE MEMBER that voted for it got BOOTED out in the Nov. 2005 elections.

Why is it that when a story like this breaks the immediate kneejerk reaction from the right is that the media must be lying? Doesn't it seem odd that there is never a call for closer scrutiny of the alleged crook?
What exactly is wrong with these people that they are so unwilling to accept that this is an extremely corrupt government?

Posted by: Kim | May 24, 2006 11:18:06 PM

Just sit back and watch...ABC is correct on this story, just wait and give it a few weeks and it'll all unravel itself.

BTW, theres so such thing as the liberal media, unless your talking about the blogs. Quit using that excuse, it's old and used up and it's flat out not true. Do a little homework and find out who owns the MSM outlets, and you'll see why it's not a liberal media.
