Bush, FBI Targeted by Puerto Rican Threats

May 23, 2006 3:45 PM

Puerto_rican_powder_letters_nr A string of hate mail, containing an unknown powdery substance, threatens violence against the FBI and President Bush to avenge the death of Puerto Rican separatist leader Filberto Ojeda Rios.

The large envelopes, listing Rios as the sender, began showing up May 15 at FBI offices in Birmingham, Philadelphia, Spokane and Baltimore.  The Baltimore package arrived today.

Rios was killed last September in a shootout with FBI agents at a farm house in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico. He was the founder of "Los Macheteros," which the FBI considers a terrorist group.

FBI officials say the group is the subject of an active investigation.

Don't think it will be much of a threat since the population of Puerto Rico is broken up between being the 51st state and staying a U.S. commonwealth. (Almost 50/50) The people who want to be independanct are less than 4% of the population. FBI should resolve the investigation without bloodshed. Martyrs make for bad politics.

So...if it were possible to entirely vanquish Al Queada, the Taliban, N.K., Iran, Hamas, Fahtwa, Argentina et al... that would mean the war on terrorism will never be over so long as even these little groups such as "Los Macheteros," of Puerto Rico exist?
Man! It's going to be a long little war, people if we think we need erradicate every potential voice of opposition to US policy.
(And that says nothing for the Associated Press and journalists.)

Making threats against the President of the U.S.A. is not smart. It is like asking nicely to be snuffed out....even for the small fish. Re-think it.

Lumping the Macheteros in with actual terrorists is a waaaayy big stretch that doesn't hold up to rational scrutiny.
The Macheteros are politically-driven criminals (convicted bank robbers, murderers, and loud-mouthed would-be intimidators) but their aim is not to spread terror among the civilian population as the Islamists seek to do, but rather to lash out angrily at a world that doesn't conforn to their every whim.
Given that Puertorrican electoral turnout runs in the 70-80% in any given election and the pro-independence cause never polls above 5%, at its best, they are merely consumed with fury and hate at a populace and political system that doesn't let them grow into the stature of international liberators they dream of becoming.
One would suspect a healthy dose of psychotherapy would be a suitable treatment for their delusions, whereas true terrorists require slightly different treatment, preferably via air delivery.
These boys are really not that different from the Michael Moore and the Dixie Chicks of the world--they are *all* consumed by their sensense of slf-importance and by self-destructive hatred for their political antagonist--the only difference being that Michael Moore hasn't overtly threatened the life of anybody. Yet. Though it is likely he too fantasizes about emptying an AK-47 into the President and another republican electoral victory just might push him to rob a Wells Fargo truck, too--to finance his cushy exile-to-be in the south of France, where they can truly appreciate his kind of genious.

The Macheteros are desperate and deadly serious criminals but *not* terrorists; lets reserve that term for actual mass-murderers, folks.

The United States should cut the umbical attached to Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico contributes nothing to the United States yet receives all Federaly Funded Programs. Half of the islands population reside in the US and estimates are that 75% are involved in drug/criminal activities.

FJ, I agree big time.

Russell, I am a puertorican, and I have lived in USA for the last couple of years as I was promoted and transferred by my company. I came to school in the US and worked in PR for a while ..

Personally, I think it is offensive to think 75% of us are criminals.. Granted, there are many who are, but to lump us all into that stereotype is just plani wrong.. Unfortunately ,those who are indeed criminals are not confined to a singular ethnic group..

There are many of us who work and contribute, pay our taxes, and live rather similar lives to all who wish for peace and tranquility, and the building of a better future for all.

I do think neither terror nor violence is the answer to anything.. Politics is just that.. ultimately US will have the final word upon what the future of PR will be, same as it has with the US Virgin Islands and Guam, until then, opinions are just opinions.

Just look at history and see whether your assumption of US never receiving anything from Puerto Rico is correct, you may be surprised, as there are many things US has received over they years since 1898.

While I do respect your right to express your opinion, I don't necessarily have to agree with it.

When one thug with a gun gets threaten by another thug with a gun egos predominate irregardless of who gets in the way. So what is the FBI trying to prove? I say handel this as they would any other criminal activity but don't elevate it to the statis of terriorist.
