Caught on Tape: Jefferson's Best

May 22, 2006 4:12 PM

Here are some of Congressman William Jefferson's (D-LA) most amazing comments captured on the FBI's undercover microphones.

1. "I'm in the shadows, behind the curtain."  Click here to see this quote in the original affidavit.

2. "[He has] more deals going than the goddamn man in the moon. He's a very, well, the word might be corrupt." (describing a business associate) Click here to read this quote in the actual affidavit.

3. "All of these damn notes we're writing to each other as if we're talking, as if the FBI is watching."  (said to an associate wearing an FBI hidden recorder) Click here to see this quote in the original affidavit.

4. "I'm gonna get your deal out of the way ... and I probably won't last long after that. Click here to read this quote in the actual affidavit.

5. "I will give it a thousand per cent, as you might imagine. I'm going to try my best to deliver it for you and not disappoint you." Click here to see this quote in the original affidavit.

6. "Ah, I gave him the African art that you gave me and he was very pleased." (The FBI says African art was a code the Congressman used to describe a cash payoff.) Click here to read this quote in the actual affidavit.

Incriminating is it not? Excellent job compiling and uncovering the quotes.

What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and then lose his soul?

Why isn't there a big outlash from the media to publicly release these incriminating surveillance videos?
I'm sure if Mr. Jefferson was a Republican, the media would have all kinds of groups protesting outside the capitol, etc. saying, "Release those tapes!".

It doesn't matter what political party he's in. If a court finds him guilty then he's a criminal. Period. There are no Democrats or Republicans in federal prison, only numbers.

In a way it does matter if he is a Democrat or a Republican. The media would have torn a Republican apart. The publicity would leave him little chance of a fair trial. The Democrat gets a pass from the media, giving him a better chance at a fair trial. Equal justice? hmmmmm

Where are all the dems who were screaming "culture of corruption" about the Republican party?

Posted by: DJ | May 24, 2006 12:22:34 PM

Not only is Jefferson a Democrat he's a black Democrat and the FBI would have to find a dead boy in his freezer - instead of bundles of cash - before fellow Democrats will call for his resignation. Besides, this blows their whole election strategy of painting the Republicans as corrupt before the November elections. All Republicans will have to do is mention McKinney, Kennedy and now Jefferson to stifle that argument.

Republicans DO get more attention now from the media. This is true. That's because they've held both houses of Congress since '94, the presidency for 26 of the past 38 years, have appointed the majority of Supreme Court justices, and have purported to be above corruption themselves. When Clinton was in, who got all the media attention for engaging in physical shenanigans with a lowly intern? I would say, by the way, that Duke Cunningham (convicted Republican) got no more attention than Jefferson. DeLay got so much more attention because he was more prominent, and wielded his power around like a sledgehammer.

Sadly, we tolerate such people. And unless something worse occurs, he'll win easy re-election from the same people he has harmed because of his criminal conduct.

And congress? Instead of thanking the FBI for a job well done, they act like children who haven't had a nap.

Jefferson will go to jail soon enough. He doesn't worry me because he's been found out. I wonder how many of those congressmen complaining have their own refrigerators full of money?

My guess, several...

It's only natural that a Democratic bias media is pushing this one under the carpet. Lord help us if it was a republican, that's all we would be reading about. But what's new.

and the REPUBLICANS are corrupt, huh?

Posted by: Brett | May 24, 2006 4:15:42 PM

Democrats are calling for Jefferson's resignation. Pelosi has just called for it and Jefferson has refused to give it.

Get rid of the amendment system, AND give the president line-item-veto, and a lot of this goes away. Amendments have pretty well made sure that nefarious activity will prevail. I laugh when I hear the words "bipartisan" and especially "comprehensive." What the **** does that mean?!? They don't get it, they don't need to, and they won't. I'm just trying to collect as much as I can as fast as I can to cover for the Social Security I deserve but won't get because illegals will.
