Huge Identity Loss

May 22, 2006 12:58 PM

The personal information of nearly all living veterans now may be at risk. The home of a Veterans Affairs employee was recently burglarized. Someone apparently stole a disk containing the social security numbers, dates of birth and names of 26.5 million veterans. Both the FBI and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are investigating.

Senator John Kerry, D-MA, issued the following statement, "If your credit card company or your doctor's office lost your personal private information, you'd go ballistic. There's no more personal and private information than a veteran's medical information. This is no way to treat those who have worn the uniform of our country. Someone needs to be fired, the perpetrators need to be caught and the security system at the V.A. needs to be massively overhauled."

DOES ANYONE REALIZE HOW MUCH MONEY THAT DISC WILL BE WORTH ON THE BLACK MARKET.??!! ALL THE THIEF HAS TO DO IS SELL IT PIECEMEAL. EVEN IF ITS FOUND THE DISC COULD AND MORE THAN LIKELY WILL BE COPIED NUMEROUS TIMES. SO WE MAY CATCH THE THIEF BUT WE WILL NEVER GET ALL THE COPIES OF THE DISC THAT I SUSPECT HAVE BEEN MADE. VERY SAD!! THE EMPLOYEE NEEDS TO HAVE MORE DONE TO THEM THAN BEING FIRED. CONSIDERING THE POSSIBLE IMPACT OF THIS INFORMATION BEING SOLD AND MISUSED IS TOO GREAT TO COMPREHEND BY MOST.

BY THE WAY WHY DO WE CARE WHAT SENATOR KERRY HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS THEFT? WE NEED TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE IN CHARGE OF THE INVESTIGATION AS TO WHAT IS BEING DONE. WE DO NOT NEED TO READ ABOUT A QUOTE BY KERRY AS TO HOW UNFAIR THIS WILL BE TO VETERANS> REALLY???

Cleary, the VA has glaring security problems if an employee is able to take home such a disc. It sounds like espionage to me but for what purpose??
P.S. Yeah, Bush stole the disc. Only the ignorant blame authority figures for every ill in the world.

Amen Frank! Who cares what Kerry says. They could have asked the opinion of any veteran; why him? But, it has no bearing on the investigation of the theft. After all, every crime is unfair to the victim.

Questions: 1) Why was the employee allowed to take that disc home with them? 2) Isn't the Veterns Administration aware of the FACTA Law passed last summer 2005. Any person losing thier identity due to this can make the Veterns Administration responsible. 3) Was the VA employee part of this theft?

To Frank and Roger and Ken,

At least Sen. John Kerry is aware of the problem and has called for someone to be accountable for such a breach. Although the records that were stolen contain sensitive personnel information, one thing they don't indicate is political party affiliation.
As a Veteran, I am pleased that someone/anyone has spoken out to hold someone accountable. We would appreciate any assistance from any politician.

Does the President have any comment on this, after all doesn't he go around touting the fact that he is the Commander in Chief.

Even though President Bush isn't a veteran, he should join Sen Kerry to get to the bottom of this incident.

Bush is a veteran having served in the National Guard...but that is not the point. I am also a veeteran and am appalled that some idiot took this information home. The person who did this should be terminated for putting millions of us at risk!

We are patriots. We fight against the burtal oppression of tirants and dictators, because it's the noblist a fellow human can do for another, even at the cause of ones'life. Commitment is accountabilty. these words are meaningless in today's political world, the next battle will be here to recame democracy.
