'Mother of All Avian Flu Clusters' in Indonesia
May 24, 2006 10:33 AM
Seven members of a family in Indonesia have been diagnosed with avian flu, prompting investigators from the World Health Organization to frantically track down anyone else that may have been in contact with them.
This is the "mother of all clusters," according to WHO regional spokesperson Peter Cordingley.
To date, the WHO says there is no evidence that the virus has spread beyond the family into the general community but that human-to-human transmission cannot be ruled out.
Many avian flu experts believe that one of the most likely possible causes of widespread human-to-human transmission will be a mutation of the H5N1 virus. So far, genetic sequencing on the Indonesia virus has not shown that the virus has mutated in any way.
Six of the family have died, and it is believed that another member of the family may also have died from avian flu, but she was buried before samples were taken.

The body should be exhumed and tested.

why dont the goverment just tell everyone to get ready for the real deal. I suggest we all get food and water and plenty of ammo to protect our families.Cause if this thing hits home.its goin to be somethig we"{ve never seen.I wonder how many people will be left. they did"nt say anything about AIDS till millions had it.PLAN FOR THE WORST

Every past civilizations had a major epidemic and we all know that history repeats itself.

Yes, history tends to repeat itself,
and everyone would do themselves well by looking into the Spanish Flu of 1918. Similarly it should take about a year to completely play itself out globally, and 6 to 8 eight weeks should be planned for local infections to break out and complete itself. So, maybe storing a little water and canned food not such a bad idea.. just in case? A word to the wise..

How come nobody's blamed this on Bush yet? Isn't everything in the world somehow his fault?

To timmco: are you asking a question or stating a fact?

It sounds like we've found another abortion foe (timmco) who can't see beyond the fact that Bush says he's against abortion to see that he is very responsible for ruining this country. Although I too oppose abortion, I don't believe what someone "says" they believe and what they "do". Avian flu is not our President's fault. Hopefully, he has actually prepared for what could happen

With "normal" flu that we experience yearly, there is no way of knowing which strain(s) will make its way around the country. We take our best guess, and vaccines are produced. Some are effective, some are relatively worthless. With avian flu, it is not as if we have not been warned, nor identified H5N1 and have time to work on potential mutations since it is obviously slow moving and has not yet, apparently, mutated to human/human. However, it has mutated from avian only to cats, for example. Obviously this is an extremely virulent virus. One can imagine what will happen when it does travel to the US on flyways. People will not be allowed in to cordoned off areas where massive outbreaks have occurredfor the sake of their own health, and to prevent further spread. Healthcare workers will have to remain within areas that are already afflicted. We may have martial law. People should start thinking about this and prepare. We have not experienced a pandemic in our lifetimes, and it truly is long overdue, according to statistical evidence. Think about it, folks. Your govenment is NOT going to be there for you. Better be there for yourselves.
