No Thought Given to Taking Zarqawi Alive
June 08, 2006 12:13 PM
U.S. military officials gave no thought to capturing Abu Musab al-Zarqawi alive, U.S. ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad tells ABC News.
Khalilzad says he was informed yesterday by General George Casey that the military was getting close to al-Zarqawi and that there was no plan to move in troops for a possible capture.
"That was not brought up," he said "The only means that could be applied in a timely fashion was the attack by air power and that was decided by General Casey as the right thing to do."
U.S. jet fighters dropped two 500 pound bombs on a house in a field about five miles north of Baqubah. The strike took place at 6:15 p.m. Baghdad time, 10:15 am. in Washington, D.C.
Initial reports that al-Zarqawi had survived the attack, with severe injuries, were later denied by U.S. officials. They said al-Zarqawi was killed outright in the bombing.

Let's be practical: Zarqawi would have been more valuble captured and interrogated than he is dead. If it were feasible, with a high probability of success, our people would have put the habeus grabbus on him. It wasn't so they didn't! To say that compassion or lack of it was a factor is silly.

In addition to the 5 men killed in this raid, there was a woman and her young child killed; furthermore, multiple civilians seem to be killed in every one of our operations over there, because nobody in our military or in the Bush administration acknowledges any moral responsibility for how they carry out their actions--think Abu Ghraib here. Victoria is absolutely right to bring up this point and the rest of you well, are not men yet until you take your thumbs out of your mouths and start demanding some effort and character from the people you put in charge of things. Anybody who thinks the most powerful nation on earth can't spare the effort to take some people in a house prisoner to avoid needless deaths is making excuses for your own lack of character.

I believe I have the best idea for bin Laden's end. The US needs to gather several bears and make them mean and once bin Laden's cave is located where he is hiding do not feed the bears for several days and put them in the cave and let then have him for a snack.

Just exactly whose side are you folks on?
Could you please tell me that?

HOW COULD ZARQAWI HAVE KILLED SO MANY AMERICANS?
Before Iraq, it was not the common goat keeper who could hurt us but highly trained terrorists through elaborate and expensive plots. Our military, the best prepared in the world to deal with military threats, have been turned
into sitting ducks for the entertainment of people who would never have had a chance IN THEIR LIVES to hurt us.
The thousands of insurgents responsible for the death of Americans in Iraq would just be singing anti-American slogans today while taking care of their goats BUT WITHOUT THE ACTUAL ABILITY TO HURT A SINGLE AMERICAN or even to organize if it wasn't for our poorly justified presence in Iraq.
Could these people, yesterday goat herders today insurgents, have pulled off a 9/11? Well, they wouldn't have had a
chance to apply for a visa to get here like the 9/11 hijackers after 9/11. Could they have had a chance to trade their goat for a plane ticket to the US and flight school tuition? No. Would it have been easy for them to learn English and the ways of westeners also? No. But today they have on their hands almost as many american deaths as the 9/11 hijackers did.
IRAQ: A WAR OF NECESITY
WHAT ABOUT IF SADDAM DID HAVE WMDs?
(Just an envelope of weapon-grade anthrax can be enough to kill hundreds!)
-IF TONS OF COCAINE CAN MAKE IT TO THE US AND NO AUTHORITY CAN STOP IT, THE NOTION THAT 140,000 TROOPS WOULD HAVE PREVENTED SADDAM FROM HANDING ANY QUANTITY OF ANTHRAX TO A TERRORIST, WHO COULD HAVE EASILY SNUCK OUT OF IRAQ AND MET NO RESISTANCE AT THE US/MEXICAN BORDER IS A PRETTY STUPID NOTION.
-THEREFORE THEY SOLD US A WAR WITH AN ABSURD PRETEXT THAT ALSO TURNED OUT TO BE FALSE.
-THE NOTION THAT MILITARY FORCE (TANKS, AIRPLANES, ETC...) CAN BE EFFECTIVE TO FIGHT AN ENEMY WHO:
1 ONLY GATHERS IN SMALL CELLS
2 IS SCATTERED ALL OVER THE WORLD
3 HAS NO FLAG
4 HAS NO UNIFORMS AND
5 WOULD USE CIVILIAN AIRPLANES AND HOME-MADE BOMBS AS WEAPONS
IS A PRETTY STUPID NOTION.
HOW DID WE END UP BUYING THIS I WONDER?

Zarqawi taken alive would have been an inspiration to an element willing to take hostages and/or commit heinous acts to secure his release.
Spare me the emotion Victoria.
Lives were saved by erasing him.

If it was me, knowing that Abu survived the bomb I'd try to take him alive because he shure would have a lot of interesting things to tell. But keeping him alive would generate a lot of trouble and a long meaningless trial. So I would give him a shot to put him to sleep, take a pic, tell the world 'oh, he just died' and take him to some safe place to have a talk or two with the guy and dump him later. Maybe, just maybe, thats what happened...

I think that was the fairest trial I hve seen. My only regret is that there was a child killed during that bombing. That child had no beliefs.

Victoria, Victoria, Victoria,
Maybe "you" should consider going over to the Middle East and try "talking" these hoodlums into being nice people....These terror mongrels have a very long history of death and distruction. Don't ever forget that.
Posted by: David Kerry | Jun 10, 2006 7:36:51 PM
Well Virginia I agree with you sort of.I'd have loved seeing him taken alive. Then I would have turned him over to the families of those he killed with his car bombs and IED's.Of course since that monster was sothrilled with beheadings I would have instructed the families to find the dullest saw the could find and use it to cut off his head starting in the back of the neck

This is a war. The object of war is to kill your enemy, limit your losses and end the war as quickly as possible. It's not to put your troops into harm's way by trying to capture the enemy and give them a "fair" trial. And show these terrorists compassion??? This is war. Kill, limit, end...

What would Virginia and Rich have them do? Serve Zarqawi a subpoena? Get a grip.
Posted by: Bill | Jun 13, 2006 1:05:18 AM
blow up all the terrorist. they did it to us. have you forgotten already victoria?
Posted by: roy | Jun 14, 2006 12:19:47 AM
Why take that animal alive to feed and clothe him during a trial like Hussein???? My tax dollars can be better spent that feeding/clothing/bedding a terrorist animal.
