This Is Malibu Calling -- Is This Cher?
June 13, 2006 11:26 AM
It was 7:20am Washington time on Sunday, May 28th, and C-SPAN was doing one of their open call segments when a caller from Malibu, Calif. started talking about the need to send U.S. troops fighting in Iraq a special kind of helmet lining that helps protect their heads. The caller said she had pledged some of her own money to purchase the safety gear that is not now part of standard gear for U.S. troops fighting in Iraq.
An alert C-SPAN anchor recognized the voice and asked, "Is this Cher?"
Tomorrow and Thursday Cher will be in Washington along with Dr. Bob Meaders, the founder and president of Operation Helmet, a group that has raised about $800,000 to buy that special helmet lining for the troops.
First stop tomorrow will be the 9:00am C-SPAN Washington Journal program, and on Thursday both will appear at a 3:00pm House Armed Services Committee Hearing.

We care, they care, the soldiers care

I think it is kind and thoughtful of her to want to continue to ensure the safety of our soldiers.

Well, at least Cher is doing something to protect our troops over there, whereas our government won't give them the proper equipment that they need. Kudos to Cher!

Good for her , at least she is backing her opinion with action and a donation toward the cause.

Who cares? Maybe the soldier who might not die because (s)he is wearing it?????

I think it's a sad state of affairs when a private citizen has to put out her own money to outfit the U.S. Army. What are we paying taxes for? Where is the U.S. government?

Well at least this is one celebrity who is backing helping the troops. If it were up to has been Cindy Williams they wouldn't be getting paid let alone any protection. Kudo's to Cher. I am not a big Cher fan but this really makes me like her more.

Who cares?? Alot of us care, and clearly Cher cares, which is much more than can be said for the guys orchestrating the war and continuing to send young people over there to die without the kinds of body and vehicle armor they need to be as safe as possible in this bloody, horrible conflict.

I think its great Cher supports the troops. So does Gary Sinise. I think they are very brave and unselfish to stand up and put their careers on the line and risk being black-listed. I don't care what any liberal says, they are fine Americans.

Thanks Cher! Once again you have stepped up to the plate and done something more than just give 'lip service'. I personally don't have anyone serving in the Services but I appreciate that someone cares enough to give of their own money to help protect those men and women who are helping protect our country every day at the risk of losing their lives.

I think Cher may have been inspired by many of her own outfits. If anyone appreciates a good headdress its her!

Thank you Cher!! I agree with your comment yesterday that there is a misconception "that if you dont support the war, you dont support our troops." You have the biggest heart for this cause. These soldiers are parents and brother and sisters. They deserve proper head protection. This should have never been a issue to start with. I will donate to Operation Helmet today. Thanks for the love. Alan

I do not like Cher's taste in politics but I do appreciate her support of our troops. We don't have to agree with each other but we should support those that are over in in Iraq and other countries fighting for our freedoms here in America. Thanks for your support Cher.
