Plotters Plan Mass Suicide on Train on 9/11/06
July 07, 2006 6:00 PM
Federal law enforcement officials tell ABC News a plot designed to use 15 to 20 suicide bombers on one commuter train as close to Sept. 11 as possible was well under way.
The specific target was the PATH commuter trains that run in a tunnel under the Hudson River into New York City.
"This is a plot that would have involved martyrdom, explosives and certain of the tubes that connect New Jersey with lower Manhattan," said Mark Mershon, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the FBI New York Field Office. "We're not discussing the modality behind, beyond that."
But law enforcement officials say the plotters had already accessed detailed blueprints and drawings of the PATH tunnels, available on the internet.
And like the London bombers, the plan was to load backpacks with explosives.
All 15 to 20 bombers were to board one car and detonate when the train was under the river, according to officials.
"There's no question that they are vulnerable. With the right amount of explosives, the tunnel could be compromised," said Jerry Hauer, former Director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management and now an ABC News consultant.
The FBI identified the ringleader as 32-year-old Assem Hammoud of Lebanon.
Lebanese officials arrested him in April at the request of the FBI, and he reportedly has now admitted he was about to go to Pakistan for training at an al Qaeda camp.
"We know that he has acknowledged pledging a bayat or allegiance to Osama bin Laden, and he proclaims himself to be a member of al Qaeda," said Mershon.
Security was stepped up today at the PATH tunnels.
Officials said today two other alleged plotters had also been arrested, but at least five of them remain at large.
"This shows we are able to disrupt terror plots such as this," said New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "Secondly, it shows that New York remains in the terrorists' cross hairs."
Officials say the plot was uncovered more than a year ago by U.S. and Canadian intelligence agents watching a jihadist internet chat room.
Officials say the suspects communicated freely, thinking that no one could track them.
Similar chat rooms were used by the alleged terrorists arrested recently in Toronto and Miami.
"The chat rooms have literally exploded since 9/ll because we are now right in the midst of electronic jihad," said Jack Cloonan, former senior agent on the FBI's bin Laden squad in New York and now an ABC News consultant.
Officials say none of the plotters was in the United States but that several of them were nearby in Canada. Others had planned to travel to New York from Saudi Arabia.
Officials say even after their leader was arrested in April, the plotters continued to make plans, and officials say they can't be sure the plan is fully stopped, even now.

Leave it to liberals to turn this into a political story. What was the NYT release of the financial tracking info if not political? The "BIG MEDIA" would like nothing more than to see another attack on the USA - it would boost ratings and make Bush look bad. Wake up people - if you were captured by some of these idiots and had a machette to your neck, you'd be BEGGING Bush to come save your liberal hide!

Awww C'mon. Our buddies in the middle east are really fond of reporters. Just ask the many they have played with before they killed them! They toyed with them with drills, humiliation, and who knows what else before they chopped off their heads to put them on the nightly news!

What strikes me odd about this is that the accused terrorist were using chat rooms and not encrypting any of their messages. These people are not stupid and encryption is not that complicated, you just have to keep changing the rules. If indeed a plot was foiled, great if this a political ploy shame on the Bush adminstration. They do know how to manipulate the press , leak information regardless if it is based in reality.Anyone's memory long enough to remember the subtle drumbeat to the war in Iraq while we were still fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and all the time the white house was denying it had any such plans.Don't blame the press here, let's wait and see if the truth ever comes out.

The whole thing is a bunch of nonsense contrived for public consumption ahead of the mid-term elections. Spreading fear and then telling people to trust the "good guys" in office is the M.O. Just like the Toronto group and the Miami group, much ado about absolutely nothing substantive. No doubt, we'll continue to see similar "big breaks" in the coming weeks and months. Just more of the same "war on terror" charade that continues to play out to an incredibly gullible American public.

The press responsibility is to provide us the honest truth of the world’s activity and not withhold any boundaries of knowledge, nor be dictated to how it should be presented; this why they are called journalist; they research, capture the pro and cons of the issue at hand.
They should not be dictated to by any political party and this is coming from a liberal.
God Bless.

It's simply amzing to me how naive some people here in the US are. How can you not be grateful for the work that the army, FBI and President are doing to protect YOU? What will it take to wake you silly liberals up?

I have a friend who does telephone sales for a D.C. area arts organization. On Friday he got a call from a patron who works for Homeland Security: "Those headlines in New York - it's all a farce" he said. This story is nothing more than "badge polishing" on the part of the FBI and Homeland Security, intended to get more money for the likes of Peter King and Chuck Schumer to dole out to assorted "security contractors".

I find it interesting that, just like in 2004, the "Fear Factor" gets taken up a notch by the Bush administration. For several years, we hear NOTHING about foiled plots and are told that talking about them wouldn't be prudent.
Low and behold, Bush's approval rating is at an all time low and the Republicans are looking pretty week for the November elections. I've heard that some Republicans would prefer that the President NOT campaign with them.
I think it is unfortunate that our government feels a need to manipulate the emotions of the population to try to stay in power. But is it really just about protecting the people or is it more to do with being on top and in charge?
America IS NOT safer today than it was six years ago. More people in the world hate American than ever before. That's a lovely legacy for this administration.

If anyone is worried about the "fabric of our country" consider this. It's already thread bare.
Each time an elected politician takes a bribe for personal gain or breaks the law or undermines the intent of our constitution and gets away with it with no penalty...each time the voters no longer have confidence in the effectiveness of their vote...each time a president is enabled to act as though we live under a monarchy...each time congress can provide themselves with a $30,000 pay raise but not offer so much as a penny of hope to those in America who only see $7,400.00 per year from minimum wage...when the economy and the military of this country are being manipulated by covert military and political causes with the prime objective of creating global dischord...and every time the people who lead this country can do so by waging wars of choice based on less than honest and honorable intent, with the only consequence being that our (most often) disadvantaged youth pay for it with their lives and limbs, the fabric of this country takes yet another acid wash.
These are just a few of the things that ruin the fabric of America.
It's not the people speaking out. It's not the press or the people who report on the causality of official decree and it's not the announcements of foiled plots by people stupid enough to use chatrooms to publicly lay their plans to declare war on our country that threaten our security.
We have to stop scrutinizing our fellow countrymen and women as though we were living the Twighlight Zone episode of the Monsters on Maple Street and make leadership accountable in every instance and to the same standards that we the people are held to and expected to observe.

It's a lose-lose situation. When the next attack happens, one side will say not enough was done to protect us. The other side will say "Look, the President didn't do enough to protect us."
Seems to me that what we have here is a failure to communicate.
There is NO EASY answer. We are never going to be safe from the threat of terrorism. All we can hope is to keep it under some sort of control, by means which will not always be popular.
When the next attack happens, I think I dread the finger pointing in the aftermath as much as burying the dead.
We MUST find a common ground...not only in our governmental policies, but as individual American Citizens. We have to be as united as our enemy.
I wish us luck.

The Liberals are so damn concerned to report anything found without consideration for other Americans and military people that could be in harms way.
No Liberals seem to want to comment on the WMDs that have been popping up in Iraq! No, that story doesn't support their lies and slander aimed at Conservatives.
In about 120 days their brand of politics is going to be voted out and they will all realize that Liberal lies only helps the opposing cause... Let Freedom Ring!

to all those bloggers who think that liberals leaked this story, think about it. The Admin released this story over the objections of the FBI. Why, especially on the eve of the London bombings? To tout their success in winning "the war on terror."
Bah! Two PR campaigns to make Bush look competent. Here's a post from a conservative ex-CIA guy and writer for American Conservative Magazine, Philip Giraldi to put it in perspective:
“The so-called New York tunnel plot was a result of discussions held on an open Jihadi web site. They are not professionally trained terrorists, however, and had no resources with which to carry out the operation they discussed.
“Despite press reports that they had asked Abu Musab Zarqawi for assistance, there is no information to confirm that. It is known that the members discussed the possibility of approaching Zarqawi but none of them knew him or had any access to him.
“In sum, the plot, if that is what we would call it, was not well conceived, and there was no possibility of flooding Wall Street. There was no connection to a cell in the US. Finally, professional terrorists generally do not discuss targeting on open channels. As it was being monitored from the beginning of the open discussion, there was little chance anything concrete would have developed.”

Get over it! There's always an election coming up. Don't think the timing is otherwise always questionable also. If you knew everything the FBI and other agencies were doing....the bad guys would know too!! What then would or could you contribute to help the situation? Stop being so critical that is unless you are in the arena.

To misdirect this dialog toward the evil in America that is supposedly "liberal" is child-like, simplistic and nothing more than a pure partisan effort to shield the incompetencies of the current administration and ruling majority in Congress for the last 6 years.
The "liberals" have no more to do with the terrorist plots being aimed at this country and around the globe than, say the Bush administration, against all circumstantial evidence to the contrary and in spite of all obvious motive for personal gain that followed, had to do with orchestrating or allowing the events of 9/11.
This would include behavior such as sweeping plane loads of potential associates and family members of Osama Bin Laden out of the country before any of them could be asked so much as a single question about thier mutual relationships with the alledged master mind and planner of the tragedy.
It's not a liberal/conservative issue.
It's an issue that pits those who genuinely care about this country and those who simply wish to profit wealth and/or power from it and offer little more than lip service, propaganda and the lives of the young to gain it through feigning actual concern for our security and well being.
Posted by: zach | Jul 10, 2006 3:43:39 PM
I'm confused. Wasn't this story reported by the N.Y. Daily News? Are those here lambasting the "liberals" aware of the political leanings of this newspaper?
Posted by: MJ | Jul 10, 2006 4:25:41 PM
Americans deserve what they get. First time, maybe you did not know, but the second time you should have known who and what policies you were electing. Whether this ignorance was innocent (stupidity) or intentional (fascism) does not matter. In politics intentions don't count, results do.

IT is GOD not G-d! I feel for those who don't have any faith. We are always singing GOD Bless America, but we can't seem to realize that GOD has always bless America we are one of the wealthies country on the plant earth. This land was built on the word of GOD (The BIBLE) and now since so much has happen to AMERICA (the land of the BRAVE the HOME of the FREE) we have lost our values and principles. Yes,at this point the only brave individuals are our SOLIDERS who are fighting for a country who always have their noses in some other country business.
Until America unite with one another (African Americans and White Americans) we will not be able to unite with others countries. How can we join togther and fight for some other country -- but we can't join together and fight against the issues here in America. I know this was off the topic, but who are we fooling -- nobody but overselves. GOD BLESS you all!
