ABC News Exclusive: Three Alleged Ringleaders ID'd

August 10, 2006 2:02 PM

Brian Ross Reports:

Three of the alleged ringleaders of the foiled airplane bomb plot have been identified by Western intelligence agencies involved in unraveling the plot.

Two of them are believed to have recently traveled to Pakistan and were later in receipt of money wired to them from Pakistan, reportedly to purchase tickets for the suicide bombers.

Sources identify the three, who are now in custody, as:

--Rashid Rauf

--Mohammed al-Ghandra

--Ahmed al Khan

Wow. Imagine if it was the wiring of those funds that sprung the police action. Could mean a very close call indeed.

'Three Alleged Ringleaders ID'd' <--Bush, Cheney, Rove?

Bush bin Laden is planning another 9/11 - to strike just before the November 'elections' - as Lamont has shown that even Diebold can't save them now.

Cheers,
Lori R. Price

Pakistan huh, a close ally in the terrorwar and whos intelligence agency has notoriously close ties to militant muslim groups. There's a big chance the ISI had a hand in this.

Posted by: Erik | Aug 10, 2006 2:47:06 PM

I wonder if they were caught by the US monitoring of international wire transfers (SWIFT)? If so it was before it was exposed to the world by overzealous reporters with an anti-Bush agenda. Way to go New York Times for blowing the cover on that program and endangering my country.

Posted by: Kelly Clark | Aug 10, 2006 3:13:09 PM

Wow! Another terror alert - just as Cheney/Bush/Snow equate Lamont vote in CT with siding with Al Qaeda. Goes to show you, I guess, that if you're against the war in Iraq, then you're still with the turrists. Let's ramp up the fear factor right until - ta da! - the election in November. Let's see if I got this straight: Bush cabal could go down (if Diebold doesn't steal it again) and get indicted for war crimes (if the Senate doesn't rewrite the Geneva Conventions on War Crimes) and so it's time to show the rest of Amurka that they have everything to fear, including fear itself - especially fear of flying. Let's ask Erica Jong about this one…

Posted by: Gerald Wadsworth | Aug 10, 2006 3:30:30 PM

If the ringleaders are "alleged," why isn't "the foiled airplane bomb plot" also "alleged"?

Posted by: mike | Aug 10, 2006 3:44:57 PM

They found this out by monitoring the wired funds. What about the privacy rights of the poor terrorists? Shouldn't they be able to wire money without government interference? What will the New York Times say?

Posted by: Steve | Aug 10, 2006 4:13:19 PM

Thankfully, this happened in England and not here in the USA where bleeding hearts would have made sure the wire transfer and telephone calls of these plotters would be free from wiretap or trace.

See! Electronic survailence works

Thanks for the news that 5 are still at large, here in the UK we're being told hardly anything to avoid "panic". If the remainder of a cell fears it is cornered - we have reason to be very cautious here in London over the next few days on ALL forms of transport.

Wake up Libs... the world is an evil place. This is not the good old days anymore. Thank God for Tony Blair, and thank God for George W Bush!

"Wow. Imagine if it was the wiring of those funds that sprung the police action. Could mean a very close call indeed."

Oh. You mean the monitoring of international funds transfers that was exposed recently by the NY Times, et al? The one where the Swiss have decided to clamp down on the sharing of related information? The one that was just another indication of the evil Bush/Cheney/Rove conspiracy to steal our freedoms?

That one? Thank God and the liberal press that it won't happen anymore!

thanks,

Why do we continue to use the term suicide when the correct term would be homicide?!!
This is why border control is so important and the continued fight against terroism must be fought with commitment and that includes Iraq and Afganistan.

Chris' point is well taken. Recall the NY Times just took great pride in exposing how counter terrorism experts were using the financial system to track money transfers amongst suspected terrorists. Shame on the NY Times for sharing with the terrorists how we're hunting them.

Wow,

President Bush's homeland security plan is working...and he foiled a terrorist plot without the approval of the Democrats; Imaginge that.

Pakistan is a haven of terrorism. They are formenting and breeding terrorism and they do nothing about their terror camps.

Looks like the Brits have been on the ball since the London attacks.

Well, Danged police should have waited 'til the deed was done, then the ACLU would've had a tougher time and could have blamed it on Bush.

If this doesn't prove we are in a global terror war, you never will see the light. You clowns that state Pres. Bush was planning another 9-11 need your head examined. Writers for Popular Science have put together a book "Debunking 911 Myths". It refutes the nonsensical garbage coming from the black helicopter crowd.

Wow, and to think that the New York Times was more concerned about terrorist's rights being violated by spying on overseas wire transfers.

Posted by: Tom Colandrea | Aug 10, 2006 4:42:02 PM

Perhaps the NY Times can uncover the way we spied on these poor terrorists and expose it.

Posted by: Ron Singal | Aug 10, 2006 4:45:05 PM

Another probable case of profiling. Sounds like their civil rights may have been violated. I hope the ACLU hears about this.

I can't believe this. Those guys should be tried and convicted.

Posted by: harold | Aug 10, 2006 4:45:59 PM

Was it really smart to release those names so early in the investigation?

Posted by: Lauren | Aug 10, 2006 4:51:12 PM

Kinda fishy, the way these plots keep being uncovered right before Americans express their distaste for the Bush agenda.

Posted by: Peter | Aug 10, 2006 4:52:20 PM

I wonder if an "illegal" wiretap was used to stop the plot? If so, should have just let the plot continue on? What if your child were on the plane?

Posted by: Sidney | Aug 10, 2006 4:59:12 PM

Good thing they were monitoring overseas bank transfers and phone calls, and the New York Times didn't have time to tip them off!

Posted by: Louise | Aug 10, 2006 5:08:50 PM

Oh, please... I admit Bush and co. are not favorites of mine, but come on. The biggest problem we have in this country is Far Right and Far left. One side always undoing what the other has done. It is getting very old... and very discouraging. We have problem that needs collaboration not isolation. Give me a break.

Posted by: John Gault | Aug 10, 2006 5:17:44 PM

Isn't it great that our Government has the international cooperation and systems in place to catch these fiendish plots? It very well might have been the wire transfer that brought the authorities. Way to go Bush and Blair!

Posted by: George Leonard | Aug 10, 2006 5:19:14 PM

Al Qaeda is jealous of Shite Hezbollah prominence. So, it tries to recapture the Islamist leadership by showing it too can. This failure is a major blow. I worry they are going to try again and soon.

Posted by: Judith | Aug 10, 2006 5:23:45 PM

A terror attack just before the election in November would help the hawks in the war on terror win... not lose... in fact, every terror plot defeated helps the Bush position concerning the issue. And Lieberman will defeat Lamont in November!

smarten up america, they don't play by any rules, measure success by how many innocents they kill and have a 7th century view of the future.

Posted by: lew miller | Aug 10, 2006 5:53:41 PM

Good thing the NY Times did find out the investigation was going on. They would have exposed it, called it freedom of the press and then we wouldn't have cought these guys.

Posted by: Jim Swartz | Aug 10, 2006 5:54:40 PM

Sounds as if the Brits stooped to spying on the bank transfers of UK residents. Thanks to the whistle blowers the feds would have a harder time doing that here.

Posted by: Mark G | Aug 10, 2006 5:54:43 PM

A lot hangs on that word "alleged." Before becoming completely hysterical and surrendering more of what little remains of our Constitutional rights, how about a conviction or two? Or will the "alleged ringleaders" simply be "detained" indefinitely without trial?

Posted by: Kevin | Aug 10, 2006 5:56:44 PM

One wonders if intercepted international phone calls or bank transactions aided in saving perhaps thousands of lives?

Posted by: Mike | Aug 10, 2006 5:58:11 PM

Posted by: Buck Howdy | Aug 10, 2006 5:58:29 PM

Posted by: Keith | Aug 10, 2006 6:02:18 PM

The above comment by Lori Price shows how ignorant many in the public are. They would rather believe that our government is the problem rather than fanatical religious zealots that believe suicide is preferable to living. The sooner we wipe out the crazies and terrorists, the sonner we can all get on with building a better, safer world for our children. Go get them Bush! Lori, if you don't like our government, get out of my country. I have travelled the world and there is no place better than America.

Posted by: Gary | Aug 10, 2006 6:03:57 PM

Anybody who says that Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rove are behind these terrorist plots is a complete moron! Furthermore, we need to seriously look at changing our educational systems, because the sad fact is these idiots really do believe this kind of garbage and they are going to bring the united states down to her knees.

Posted by: Christopher Jones | Aug 10, 2006 6:11:10 PM

Heavens.

I hope we (NSA/FBI/CIA) didn't violate the rights of these poor dears by tracking their funds transfers thru the SWIFT program.

Posted by: Azmus | Aug 10, 2006 6:19:26 PM

Note that both electronic surveillance and the monitoring of bank transactions were important part of breaking this plot before it was executed. Exactly the same techniques that are opposed by those in the U.S. who don't think the Islamo-fascist threat is real. Thank goodness that brighter minds are prevailing.

Posted by: Zachary | Aug 10, 2006 6:19:35 PM

If they were discoved because of an international money transfer, it must have happened before the NY Times blew that secret program. Maybe this is why the President was so concerned. Oh well, the next group of crazies will be more careful, thanks to the NY Times.

Posted by: Bill Stanza | Aug 10, 2006 6:22:35 PM

I agree that if you think BushCo is behind 9/11, you're probably wearing a tin-foil hat to keep "them" from reading your mind. I don't think killing a bunch of people is the answer, either. They said the would be bombers are all "home grown" terrorists from the U.K. Islam needs its leaders to stop preaching fire and brimstone and scapegoating the west and focus on family values and modernize their religion.

Posted by: p.k. | Aug 10, 2006 6:24:42 PM

The problem with our gov't is that they brand everyone as a terrorist and there's never in between. Our gov't fails to see how they much hatred they create by our unfair policies. If anyone voices that, they are of course a terrorist! Of course true terrorists exist (and should be punished accordingly), but the majority of these people in other countries are not terrorists, they simply hate the US gov't and quite frankly, I would too if I was the recipient of Bush's policies.

Posted by: D | Aug 10, 2006 6:25:16 PM

Hmmmmm, maybe the NYT should explain to us how they could be so wrong about the terrorists not being tracked by their money transfers since they already knew intelligence agencies were tracking this prior to the NYT releasing their story on this subject.

Posted by: allen | Aug 10, 2006 6:41:36 PM

Posted by: Tiffany | Aug 10, 2006 6:43:02 PM

Jay, they wired the money to England, not USA.

Posted by: Rob | Aug 10, 2006 7:11:08 PM

I'm happy that the Brits caught these jokers, but let us remember: There have been MORE terrorist attacks worldwide AND on US soil DURING the Bush admin than prior to it. The good news: Any culture that represses its women and subscribes to a close-minded, hateful ideology is destined to fail. The West is too nimble and innovative!

Posted by: Erik | Aug 10, 2006 7:12:42 PM

Citizens for Legitimate Government? Would that be a government that appeases terrorists as instead of trying to stop them? Would that be a government that would allow the transfer of money to terrorists and their organizations and not try to stop them? Under Bush, Cheney, and Rove we haven't had a attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. That is the true sign of a legimate government, one that protects it's citizens.

Just wondering Chris are you a member of the ACLU?

Posted by: Gregg | Aug 10, 2006 7:18:16 PM

Now Pakistan will demand its pound of flesh. More F-16s, military aid, nuclear cooperation and easing of pressure that built up after the Bombay blasts. To a lay man it may appear as if the US and UK have some leverage with a country like Pakistan. But I am afraid that this leverage is being bought at the cost of feeding the establishment of a country that has become adept at sponsoring terrorism in the first place and then reaping the rewards of appearing to selectively curb it. Pakistan's co-operation is usually timed to reap maximum gain with the least impact on its primary export to the world, violent jihad. The swamp that Pakistan has become, needs to be drained. Pakistan helping swat a few mosquitoes doesn't cut it. The focus should shift to Pakistan (where it should have been from day one after Sept 11). In turn, Pakistan needs to dismantle the jihadist infrastructure whose rise it has tacitly supported and should be rewarded non-militarily for doing so. Doing otherwise will only compound the problem in the future and will entail a prohibitive cost to fix.

Ned Lamont winning the senate primary proves that the Dhimmicrats strategy fo fighting terrorism is: give them what they want/ leave them alone and they'll go away.

- the London bombings
- bombings in the Egyptian Sinai
- Seattle Jewish Federation shootings
- Bush-Cheney Abu Sayaf bombings in the Phillipines
pre 911
- USS Cole
- Tanzanian & Kenyan embassy bombings
- Kobar towers bombings
- All homocide bombings in Israel.
- I could go on and on bombings.

Perhaps Gary would like to ask himself how those zealots came to be zealots? No-one can get on with building a better, safer world when that world is predicated on inflicting further violence on others, and on America being 'better' than everywhere else.
