Tom, the reason was to save American lives and to end the war! Based on how the Japanese fought for their homeland, it was estimated that it would cost over a million American casualties to invade the Japanese main islands. The objective of war was and still is to inflict heavy casualties on you enemy so that he would lose the will to fight. If you were the President and faced with the decision to invade and have over a million of your countrymen casualties or drop the bomb and save your people and end the war, what would you do?

What's really terrifying is reading the comments on this page. If this is representative of a cross-section of America, then God help us all. Nearly six years into the Bush administration, it is clear that Bush administration policies are increasing the number of terrorists around the world, not decreasing them. Certainly, the threat of terrorism will never go away completely, but does it make sense for Bush to repeatedly and severely inflame the Muslim world and isolate the United States from almost all of our former allies?
