British Authorities Search for More Suspects and Warn Attack Could Still Be Underway
August 10, 2006 8:25 AM
Scotland Yard officials do not believe they have captured all the members involved in today's terror plot out of Heathrow Airport and are urgently searching for more suspects.
Authorities are concerned that those still at large may well have instructions to act now if the plot was disrupted, and they have not ruled out other cities and airports as possible targets of attacks. ABC News has been told that this is a well organized, "for real" plot, not an informant's suggestion.
The 21 suspects already in custody are almost all British citizens of Pakistani descent reflecting the growing influence of Pakistani members in al Qaeda. The operation is eerily similar to an earlier al Qaeda plot uncovered in the Philippines in 1995, in which 12 airplanes were supposed to have been blown up midair at the same time.
The terrorists captured overnight in London were planning to use a liquid acid explosive that can either be clear or milky depending on the formula and could be mixed up in a bathtub. A container the size of a water bottle could be enough to blow a hole in an airplane and bring down a major passenger jet, which is why airport authorities are stopping passengers from carrying liquids onboard, in particular baby bottles.
Onboard explosions were successful in two previous terror attacks in August 2004 when two Russian airliners that crashed nearly simultaneously were believed to be brought down by explosives. In 1994, a Japanese passenger was killed when a bomb hidden under a seat exploded midair on a Philippine Airlines flight.

Thank you, Thank you to the UK!!! If I were a Muslim, I would be working the hardest to find these terrorists because they are making all of Islam lose face.

As a passenger on a recent flight from London, I'd like to express appreciation for the fine work of Scotland Yard in uncovering this plot.

Now is OK to use all available means to gather intelligence? Still want "better" treatment for terrorist at GITM? Wake up USA!

This could be the nail in the coffin for the Airline Industry.
Imagine mothers trying to fly with NO bottle for their baby.
Total pandamonium!!!!
I fly one to two time a month, which I am planning on changing at great cost to me.
All becuase these idiots have made their weapon of choice passenger airplanes.

we all have to be aware and thanklul that this plot was stopped

Simple solution to the chaos - allow no carry ons - airline provides all liquids including baby formula and milk. Everything should be checked in - As for purses - have women start carrying necessary documents in wallets like men.

What is wrong with these people? How can a religion/culture (or at least part of one) grow to have such a warped vision of the world where they feel that blowing up airplanes will actually accomplish anything?
Posted by: John | Aug 10, 2006 12:11:59 PM
Follow the money, if the funds were cut off for these organizations they could not function. It all boils down to money, but the bush administration has drop the ball big time with fighting this "war" with intelligence instead of muscle

I'm glad the authorities caught them but there will be more people in line to take their place. As fast as we can catch or kill these terrorists, more step up to take their place. There seem to be no easy answers or solutions to problems in the Middle East. These people only know two ways of life; death and war. Heck, they even celebrate people killing themselves and others around them. What kind of screwed up society do these people come from?
Posted by: Ryan | Aug 10, 2006 12:36:06 PM
I believe AlQueda is all over the place, and they are going to get us sooner or later, wake up USA!!!
Security on airlines should of figured this out sooner too, liquids not allowed on flights. We always need a catastrophe to learn. American home of the free. How true!!!!!!!!

Oh great. Why don't the British take these terrosists and give them equal justice under the law and spend millions of dollars tring to do just that. Equal justice as far as I am concerned is making these boneheads wear vests made of bombs and let them detonate the vests themselves. And then they can die for Allah and not harm anyone else.
Posted by: Paul Cameron | Aug 10, 2006 12:39:19 PM
I don't buy all this BS!
Every single major terror alert issued by either the US, Canadian or UK governments has proven to be either a manufactured facade, an entrapment sting or an outright hoax.
The Bush and Blair approval ratings are very low, what a perfect way to try to bring them back up some.

Don't lose your heads. This may have been a big event in the fight against terrorism, but you're all freaking out about long lines and conspiracy theories.
Also, stop taking snipes at other people. A few bad apples shouldn't be responsible for condemning an entire race of people.

It sickens me that countries who know there population has been infiltrated by extremests don't do more to root them out and destroy them like a cancer. When has Pakistan done any public action towards those who preach violence and terrorism? Sometimes I wish this country and Britian would just come down so hard on terrorists to make them examples to all the little disenchanted brats who wish to become terriorist in the name of allah. I wish we were allowed to hang their bodies in the streets like in the 16th century!

The airlines better start offering meals again...
Seriously, we're dealing with highly determined people that also happen to be zealots. No matter how tight the security becomes, they will find a way to thwart it.
Either we unleash bombs over everyone we think are out to harm us and destroy every last person or we deal with the fact that there will always be civilian casualties in war. They aren't terrorists; they are a well organized guerrilla army. Until we start treating them like an army, we may never win this "war on terror." The "war on terror" will just become another "war on drugs."

Until we shut down our borders, there is always going to be a threat - whether they come from overseas, Canada or Mexico. Stop the student visa's. Probably none of your readers remember when they deported several students back in the 1980's. Obviously, we are not bright enough to have learned the lesson.

I'm no wacky conspiracy theory guy...but find it interesting that when the administrations political outlook plumets deeper and deeper towards the shitter, these things pop up.
I mean...take a look at the 11 egyptian students. Why didn't they post pictures of them on the news or internet? just seems a little timely.

July 16, 1945 Hiroshima. "Little boy" was dropped and to this day I still can not fathom why? Today it is August 10th 2006. Forgive me god but if there was a time to perform such a criminal tragedy it is now. “little Boy” or a “Bigger Brother” should be dropped immediately. I see no other way. See this is exactly why people are discriminated against in the US. If you are "brown" and catch an awkward look or people acting differently around you, you need to blame folks like these people. These people simply ruin the chances for the normal people in the world that are just trying to make a living and raise a family in a country that allows them to prosper. Why do white people "hate" muslims and other brown people?? Because of the stupid acts like this that they perform. Maybe they should try to not blow up things for awhile and maybe no one would hate them.

We should immediately restrict all persons who wish to come to the U.S. from any Muslim country. We are far too soft with our liberal laws. Time to realize we are in an all out war with Islam. Yes, I am saying Islam. There are almost 100 verses in the Koran that dictate that the Muslims should convert or slay all non-believers. NH

This is crazy what the terroist are doing to America. Now that they know they can't do terroist plots in the United States due to our security they are going to the UK to get on planes torward the United States and are now blowing up planes? This is crazy. Airports need to have way better security. I'll also add that we might have not captured all of the terroist. Their might be some in-air RIGHT NOW planning to attack citys like Chicago, New York, Boston, Miami every big city in America is at risk.

I agree that we should CLOSE OUR BORDERS and not allow any students or other immigrants into the U.S. - especially not middle eastern people. It if sounds harsh, that's too bad. They have their own country, let them stay there. I'm sorry if someone is offended by racial profiling, but if that's what it takes to keep U.S. citizens safe, then so be it. It's a big world, and there's room for everybody....and they should all stay in their own countries!!! Women in the U.S. don't cover our faces, and I believe that it is dangerous to allow immigrants to do so. They could be hiding explosives between their teeth....or under those long flowing robes that they wear, or under those towels they wear on their heads. "When in Rome (or in the U.S.), do as the Romans do". Not all Islams are terrorists, but nearly all terrorists are Islam!!! Wake up U. S. politicians...you are endangering all of us with your permissive, liberal policies and practices!!! If this continues, it is only a matter of time until we experience daily acts of terrorism in the U.S. It is really out of control!!

If we go by most of the posts above, it would seem that the majority of Americans continue to see war and violence as the solution to provide peace. Do people not see the connection between the violence we perpetrate in the Middle East and the violence we reap?
Posted by: MT | Aug 10, 2006 1:11:31 PM
As sorry as I am to say this, terrorism has always and will always exist. I am afraid that our Administration uses Terrorist attacks at calculated times in order to get the popular vote back, even though I hope that is not the case. God has the last say always. We need to ask him to help thwart the Terrorist because man has proven that they can not.

I am British, and it pains me when I see such prejudiced and sometimes outright comments as are posted here. Are so many Americans so heavily anti-Asian?
In Britain a large part of the population is Middle Eastern, particularly in cities. If there are even as many as a thousand Islamic active terrorrists in the UK, does that mean we should condemn and suspect millions of innocent civilians in a desperate attempt to attatch blame?
Is it fair that THEY should fear racially charged attacks on their homes and families every time a threat like this is uncovered? No!
Our governments are feeding their own campaign of terror to us through our media.
I am not attempting to suggest any resolution to the conflict as it is simply never going to end. However hysteria and racism will not quell this conflict.

come on everyone. let's not all become racist bigots because we are afraid. this foiled attack is all a reaction to a war which we started for unlcear reasons, which was our reaction to 9/11, which was someone else's reaction to how America handles foreign affairs, which goes unchecked by us because most Americans don't speak out when those running our government are often acting in self-serving ways. we need to rule our country if we are going to preach freedom.

Men and women are putting themselves in harms way every day protecting your right to say whatever you want. These peole mean to eliminate our way of life. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS VACATIONED IN THE UK FOR THE PAST WEEK WITH HER BROTHER, SISTER IN-LAW AND 17 MONTH OLD CHILD WHO WERE SUPPOSE TO RETURN TOMORROW WHICH MAKES THIS WHOLE RED ALERT EVEN MORE PERSONAL TO ME. I REALLY DO FEEL SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE RETURNING, I WOULD BE SO SCARED, BECAUSE I KNOW HOW SCARED I AM NOW.
THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO TAKE THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND. HOW DO 11 STUDENTS GO MISSING ON 7/29 AND EVERYONE JUST READS ABOUT IT NOW? FBI NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATING THE PEOPLE WHO KEPT THEM. THE EXPLANATION FROM THE RESTAURANT OWNER FROM MANVILLE, NJ NEEDS TO BE QUESTIONED. I REALLY HOPE THIS IS BEING THOROUGHLY EXAMINED WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB. ALL OF THE 11 STUDENTS NEED TO BE SENT BACK HOME. RIGHT NOW THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PUT A TIGHT LID ON ALL EXCHANGE PROGRAMS, ETC. I TRULY HOPE IN REPORTS THAT ARE RECEIVED IN NEWSPAPERS, RADIO AND TELEVISION EVERYONE IS LEAVING CERTAIN DETAILS OUT.

Hey Joe, WAKE UP! It is unfortunate but there is a large group of people that want to destroy you and me. I don't care what has happened in the past all I know is that we have to do what we can to protect ourselves. Some of these groups have migrated to our country for a better life and now their family members back in the "old country" want to do us in. Of course, after they have established businesses here that provide them with the cash to fuel their terrorist propaganda. IF we are such Bad Guys then why don't you find a better place to live. This may not be a perfect democracy but it is ours and I defy you to find a better one in this world.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's try to remain as calm and rational as possible. The goal of these extremists is to disrupt our way of life, to diminish our freedom, and to create chaos as we fight amongst ourselves. Look to history and recognize that hate of any kind, even ours against them, can only bring more pain and suffering. Stay strong and stay united above all else.

One thing we must remember, these people were TAUGHT to hate us, at a very young age. They just didn't decide to try to kill us, last week. It's been in their heads for years many years. It's ingrained in them, and they act it out. We may hate some of our society, but we don't act it out. If we do, we will go to prison. If these people get killed while inflicting horrible act of terror on us, they are gone, and their family left here, think the family member is a hero. We have to fight against HATE in everyone.

Tom, the reason was to save American lives and to end the war! Based on how the Japanese fought for their homeland, it was estimated that it would cost over a million American casualties to invade the Japanese main islands. The objective of war was and still is to inflict heavy casualties on you enemy so that he would lose the will to fight. If you were the President and faced with the decision to invade and have over a million of your countrymen casualties or drop the bomb and save your people and end the war, what would you do?

What's really terrifying is reading the comments on this page. If this is representative of a cross-section of America, then God help us all. "Ban all Middle Eastern people", "Drop the ABomb" (on whom?) The only consolation is that I'm guessing half these postings are from white supremacist trolls. And to see the number of posts that link "freedom" to these ideas is truly nauseating.

Nearly six years into the Bush administration, it is clear that Bush administration policies are increasing the number of terrorists around the world, not decreasing them. Certainly, the threat of terrorism will never go away completely, but does it make sense for Bush to repeatedly and severely inflame the Muslim world and isolate the United States from almost all of our former allies?

How can you say that to Ismael? Telling a muslim man or woman to stop the racists and terrorists within their own religion is as hopeless a task as (for example) asking a white man to root out members of the KKK in their societu that would profess to be Christian. And can you imagine trying to change the opinions of people like that?
There is no cure for hysteria.

I agree with MT. People are so quick to judge based up on a few bad apples. And to overlook what violence we have perpituated in the Middle East.
The second largest terrorist attack in the US was done by a White (Timothy McVeigh). Don't hear of anybody wanting to drop a bomb on Arkansas for retailation.
And thinking the Republicans have the corner on handling Terrorists. Consider that after 9/11, the CIA felt that the total number of AlQuida was around 500-1000. Since GW's little war on Iraq and his hands off (pro Israel) stance in this war. The number of potential terrorists now have increased to the point you can start adding 1-2 or more zero's to the orignal CIA estimates.
Thank you GW for making this a safe world.

It's interesting to see everyone so upset and surprised that something like this might happen. Remember, we have declared war on terrorist. Did everyone expect that we could invade a couple of Arab countries and expect that we (except for a few military folks) would be immune from any notion that a war is going on. I doubt that a country can be engaged in a war and not feel it in their homeland. Let's face it, we aren't even really feeling the economic crunch. When will that hit? Our good Christian country and those evel Islam countries.... how many civilians have been killed - 9-11 (a few - since none) Afgan and Iraq (more than a few but who's counting) --- buckle up you chin straps folks, maybe they way will come to our shores. We should know that an enemy in this game plays for keeps.

The real danger is that the terrorists may be more clever than we surmise, and this may be a planned failure and a diversion for another attack of a completely different nature.

SELL YOUR STOCK HOLDINGS. The market is going to crash. Even the fed pausing the rate hikes couldn't help the market to a gain this week. This is a SERIOUSLY bad time for the economy. I just liquidated all of my holdings. I am OUT of the market for the near term.

I blame George Bush for all this. Instead of curtailing terrorism, HIS Iraq war has inflamed the Islamic world. Now, we have our own Muslim citizens to worry about, not just foreign terrorists. The world is far more
dangerous now due to this tragic, immoral war in Iraq. George Bush will be remembered as one of the worst Presidents in our country's history. His father was far more savy in world politics.

Just imagine if this administration reacted differently to 9/11? Image we stayed in Afghanistan, where we had the whole world's support to go after the Taliban. Imagine we kept our $$ and resources there... to find bin Laden, bring him to justice through our judicial system. What we've done by taking our eye off the ball and going into Iraq, is what doctors say about operating on cancer victims... it's a last resort, because almost ALWAYS.. after they open up, the cancer spreads wildly. This is what this stupid !@#$ administration has achieved. Fan the flames of whackos by saying things like, "Bring 'em On". Maybe the pres can be a little more vocal and publicly take it back, more than what he tried to do about 6 weeks ago. Well... they brought it on. Jack-ass.

It certainly is starting to feel like WWIII here in America. I am sure it has felt that way for quite some time to the Lebanese, Israelis, Afghans, Iraquis and Sudanese. More victims of islamic terrorism are muslims than Americans, by far. That's mighty cold comfort on a day like today though. It looks like there is no where to run or hide from this geo conflict that has masqueraded as a "Middleast" problem.

I cannot believe what I am reading in these responses. I am shocked at the barrage of ignorance, intolerance and hatred. What – drop another “atom bomb” on the terrorists? Where are you going to drop it? On every country in
