Citadel Faces Sexual Harassment Problem Head On
August 24, 2006 12:15 PM
Almost 20 percent of female cadets at the Citadel military college say they have been sexually assaulted since they enrolled, the school said yesterday.
A cadet survey also revealed that almost 70 percent of female cadets say they've experienced some type of sexual harassment. Instead of downplaying the survey results, however, the school's president held a press conference saying the school must act now.
"Some will wonder why I would release internal information that reflects negatively on the college," said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John Rosa. "My reason is simple. People must be able to communicate about these issues if we are going to resolve them."
The school conducted its first ever comprehensive Values and Respect survey among cadets last spring, and the results indicate problems of sexual assault and harassment among both female and male cadets.
Twenty-two female respondents said they had been sexually assaulted, as well as 19 male cadets. Women make up about six percent of the student body at the Citadel.
The survey also addressed issues regarding the school's honor code and cadet morals. A spokesperson for the college said the results of the survey will be addressed in the classroom and with peer mentoring.
Lt. Gen. Rosa, a Citadel graduate himself, talked to reporters yesterday, and the school has even posted the survey results on its website.
"Communication requires openness and honesty. And honesty requires courage," he said. "The Citadel instilled these values in me."

Oh great, young men and women together aboard ships, in dorms, and in barracks, gee I wonder if that would create a problem. Let me count the ways. Here we go again ladies and gentleman, political correctness raises its ugly head and hides the truth. No one will tell it like it is.(Gutless).

why not compare the same numbers of all the colleges and universities that have coed dorms and living quarters...maybe then this wouldn't be such a big deal.

This is not new information.
Women in the Military have been sexually harrased for years. New policies are needed to combat this problem. Hopefully Lt. Gen. Rosa's open approach will help.

I like the approach used by General Rosa. Too bad he is not the SecDef.
America could use some integrity at the top of the heap.
General Rosa has the Right Stuff.

Segregate and discriminate, like the not too old days gone by.
Then offenses of a sexual nature will be limited to a same sex environment which should be much easier to sort out.

Perhaps if the male students are castrated it would be a more suitable environment for these young ladies and give harmony cohesion to this social experiment. Form troop of eunics perhaps, It seems that common sense apparently has been deemed unconstitutional and anything that undermines our national strength acceptable. Like no one could see this coming. Our nation is eroding from underneathe feet.
I am no sexist but will retain sympathies for victims real sexual harasment. This sounds like a joke to me.
