FBI Investigates American Connection to London Terror Plot

August 11, 2006 8:21 AM

Flag_connection_nrU.S. law enforcement sources tell ABC News the FBI is investigating new leads that involve a possible connection between people in the United States, in major east coast cities, and the London bomb plotters.

In an interview with ABC News this morning, White House Homeland Security Advisor Fran Townsend said while there is currently no indication of any plotting in the United States, she confirmed, "There are leads that the FBI is running."

With at least five, and maybe more, suspects still at large, it is the missing plotters who are the greatest security concern. Among those still at large are some of the suspected ringleaders of the London plot.

Congressman Peter King (R-NY), Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told ABC News authorities are extremely concerned about the missing suspects. "They are on the loose," said King. "These are desperate, vicious people, who have a good degree of sophistication. And they're out there, if nothing else, they're available for future operations. The more deadly threat is that there is a plan B that they would be able to implement."

Intelligence officials tell ABC News the plot's trail leads directly to al Qaeda and to the Pakistani city of Karachi, where money for the plot was wired to London.

Officials say two of those arrested in London came to Karachi in the last few months for explosives training with known al Qaeda commanders.

The terrorists had planned to use a peroxide-based liquid explosive, dyed red, to appear as a sports drink. A $10 disposable flash camera was to be used as the detonating device.

Pakistani officials have made as many as nine arrests, but the suspected ringleader remains at large. Pakistani officials say this 29-year old al Qaeda commander, Matiur Rehman, was known to be planning a terror spectacular to mark the fifth anniversary of the 9/ll attacks, and some believe the London plot may have been it.

ABC News consultant Alexis Debat, a terrorism expert at the Nixon Center in Washington D.C., says, "[Rehman] is the interface between al Qaeda's leadership and thousands, if not tens of thousands, of Pakistani militants who are able to provide the muscle for al Qaeda's operations not only in Pakistan but around the world."

WOW. You seemed to have attracted the nutballs en masse. These people will think its a conspiracy up until their heads plop on the ground. Its an amazing lesson in denial under the guise of being smarter than all. Ego - the ultimate enemy.

Terrorism is not totally concerned about how many people it can kill, but more so the disarray, confusion, and fear it can spread into societies. This terrorism war is flawed. Focusing primarily on islamic terrorist groups, as opposed to other terrorist groups(communist groups still exist). The media doesn't help the case much either. I'm not saying we should totally ignore the issue, but by all means, we should certainly not play into their hands. What good is a rule that doesn't allow people to bring carry-on bags? You just put the explosives somewhere else.

Wow. If the people on this thread are any fair representation, then I can only conclude that people in this world are dumb.

to walter66 - the US has not "cut & run" from Afghanistan; my son happens to be serving over there with many other fine Americans. You people that spew meanness and hatred infuriate me; you are no better than the people trying to hurt us. They use your ignorance and hatred to fuel their cause. I would ask each and everyone of you to get the facts before you make stupid, untrue comments.

If my facts are coordinated, FDR gave isolationism a try for the USA and the result was that the Nazi party proliferated in Europe. (Still sounds like a cozy option, but history seems to indicate the contrary).

To continue with my original thoughts, after the 3rd Reich was basically way out of hand the USA and Great Britain (overwhelmed, mortally wounded and angry as a rabid rhino) got together and kicked their butt, at great cost)...

Somehow, the Middle East was liberated in the process.

I'm very impressed with the Jewish culture for surviving such a nightmarish ordeal and offer them my sincere condolances and repsect.

Now, I will make the assertion that if the Nazi regime had been successful, the Jewish people and everyone else in Europe who was deamed by the Nazis to be imperfect or whatever would have been utterly anihilated. My simple question to the people who are commiting murder, condoning hatred and performing ditressingly horrible and disgraceful acts in the name of Islam is this: What do you think Adolph Hitler and his cohorts would have done with regards to the native people of the Middle East if the United States of America and its steadfast friends and allies had not intervened and literally kicked the Nazi's butts straight back to Germany?
Do you think Adolph Hitler had a place in his "master plan" for the men, women and children of the Middle East? I'll make another assertion and it would be: Sure he had a place for the people of the Middle East and it was something very similar to poison gas, hellish flames and mass extermination! Thats what! I could care less for the fact that a vast majority of the Middle Eastern culture has no sense of empathy and can't even imagine a feeling of gratitude towards those who literally saved them from complete anihilation, but it would be in their best interest to show some respect and leave us completely alone. The callous and detestable acts being committed are quite distasteful and rude (understated). Frankly, if the Jewish people would have become extinct then you would have had the opportunity to learn first hand what they had endured. Perhaps then, at the expense of the Jewish people of the World, you would know humility, pain and suffering and act accordingly. However, thats all just hypothetical, instead Muslims appear to encourage and support the radicals of their faith to commit these terrible acts, not at all disimilar to the acts of the Nazis of Europe. I realize there are some who do not belong in this category and with all do respect, if that is the case then MUSLIMS OF THE WORLD STAND UP AND BE COUNTED. NOW IS THE TIME TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR MORAL AND ETHICAL CHARACTER! Otherwise, stand aside while The United States and all of its mighty friends and allies kick these meek, pathetic and garbage filled bags of wasted human potential all the way back to the stone age where they belong. History is our witness. We will prevail and the cause is just or we wouldn't be bothering. We only want to live in peace and enjoy the gift of life. If we wanted your property, desired to control you (ultimately an illusion) or otherwise were corruptly interested in anything that you have then we would have done so years ago after we eliminated Hitler. Figure it out, you are here to do as you please simply because the USA stepped into World War II, at a very great cost. It is very disheartening to realize that those who were saved by our costly sacrifices are now at our throats for petty and delusional reasons.

By the way, The Jewish people have really had enough pain and suffering for one entire eternity. Leave them alone, too. Because you know what, they do have a full can of whoop-@$$ and if they take the lid all the way off of it, you will be in for a very chilling and extremely unhealthy awakening.

Not all is lost.

Friendship and Peace or Hatred and horrible death! Olive branch or talon-full of arrows? The choice is yours.

May God as you know him grant you understanding, compassion and peace.

I find that the word "terrorism" or the label "terrorist" is equivalent to a modern day witch hunt. I dare Condi Rice to define to me what that means. More people have died in pursuit of the "Global War on Terror" than have died as a result of this terror. And by more people, I mean civilian casualties. There is a major inequality of value of life so long as it's ending terror?!? No conspiracy, just wrong. Morally, ethically and humanely wrong.

Mayur, I find it amazing that people like you believe the only reason terrorists want to kill us is because we're in Iraq. This latest plot was actually conceived of in 1993 and luckily was foiled back then as well.

Posted by: marc | Aug 11, 2006 5:08:32 PM

Jon, its your willingness to negotiate with people who want to kill us that has led to all of these deaths. Placating terrorists for the last 20 years has gotten us to this point. wake up and realize that this isn't a fantasy, it isn't a utopia we live in. Just because you beleive the world can solve its problems with hugs doesn't mean the other side believes that as well.

it's amazing how easily people like you forget what/who provides the freedom you take for granted

I AM SO GLAD terrorists never make a threat against Buses I think Buses are the Safest way and Airplanes are Dangerous

Hair gels and liquid soap are not the problem (or the solution). Profile! Before we are all dead.

Marc:
You are correct, it is not Iraq, it is ,and always has been , Israel-Palestine and the west´s involvement therein.

The plot was foiled in 1993 ? Is this a rerun or delayed reaction?

You are incorrect, negotiation with those who wish to kill us is the ONLY way to stop them from wanting to kill us. Whoever us may be.

when are people in america going to wakeup and realize that the military industrial complex (3.5 million employees) thrives off war and conflict, promotes it,initiates
it,arms it, its survival depends on it(war, death, misery and destruction) most americans do not read and they believe whatever BUSHWACKER tells them. White people in america have always lived off and benefitted from the oppression of others. Our elected officials are heavy invested in the arms industry, especially the bush adminstration. Just checkout the Bush family connection to the Carlye group. Our country is run by some political savvy gansters. They are damn good at deception, experts.

As merley a spectator, here are my thoughts. Since I see so much of you arguing to one another about the truth, I can only come to this conclusion:
None of you know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There is a whole lot more going on behind the scenes(top secret) then you or I will EVER know. It looks like ALL of you have fallen victim to eroneous reporting and misinformation a.k.a. POLITICS. I have yet to see anyone from the top down, on either side, give a convincing, persuasive story.
Come on people! You have to do a better job than this. Get me off the fence! And I'm not talking about repeating what you heard a politician say. I've heard all of that nonsense. Do some real research for once.
