Federal Air Marshals Subject to Search
August 11, 2006 9:51 AM
Federal air marshals flying out of the Dallas Ft. Worth airport were dismayed to learn they would be subject to searches by airport contract security guards.
An internal memo issued yesterday in the Dallas Field Office, obtained by ABC News, instructs FAMS "not to carry any type of liquid, including water or gel (toothpaste)" and to identify themselves as air marshals prior to inspection of their bags.
"At DFW, the airport has contract security guards that will be monitoring the bypass doors and inspecting employees, including FAMs, carry-on baggage."
Air marshals, who are specially trained and authorized to carry weapons on board flights to prevent hijackings and terrorists attacks, were surprised to learn they were to be subject to search.
"Why are federal agents, who are authorized by law to carry deadly weapons on a plane, being searched for deadly weapons? Is DHS [Department of Homeland Security] afraid that there is now the possibility an air marshal will try an smuggle a liquid explosive onto a plane?" said one working federal air marshal who requested anonymity.
In recent months, numerous air marshals have complained to the media, including ABC News' 2020, that current airport boarding procedures needlessly expose the identities of air marshals who are supposed to be traveling undercover. The new Director of the Federal Air Marshal Service Dana Brown acknowledges a morale problem among his working officers and has pledged to change it.
But this latest memo issued to Dallas area FAMs yesterday has some air marshals wondering if their own safety and that of the passengers they are supposed to protect has been further compromised.

FYI, FAA Inspectors who are charged with inspecting flight crews in the cockpit are also required to be screened/inspected for dangerous items prior to boarding.

They can't have it both ways! First they are unhappy because the special treatment they receive at security checkpoints is blowing their cover, and now they are complaining because they are NOT receiving special treatment at security checkpoints. Procedures should be in place so that they appear to pass through all security measures exactly the same as any other passenger, otherwise an observant terrorist will know who they are. It's only logical.

Where will it end?....nowhere..because you have somebody watching the watcher...then who is watching somebody..then you ned to ask who is watching that person who is watching....i will soon get mxed up in this . but its good food for thought. lol

Air marshals had vacation and off days pulled in order to fly to the UK and assist with american flights in and out of the UK..
air
marshals jumped to the call! But, now they find out they are not being paid for it?

Okay so we take away their gels and liquid, but we leave them with their fully loaded 9mm. Who is really in charge? Does logic or common sense even prevail anymore?

The scene:
Federal Air Marshal who is armed walks up to an illegal immigrant hired as a security guard at DFW.
The "guard" takes the Air Marshals toothpaste and the country is now a little safer.
After all, we wouldn't want a terrorist to slit the Air Marshals throat and get ahold of the that toothpaste.

In reference to Mike,
(the first comment)
"FYI, FAA Inspectors who are charged with inspecting flight crews in the cockpit are also required to be screened/inspected for dangerous items prior to boarding"
FYI Mike. The FAA inspectors are NOT ARMED federal law enforcement personnel specifically charged with protecting the aircraft from a terrorist threat, and authorized to use deadly force with that weapon if necessary.

lets hope these air marshals enjoy a comprehensive dental plan!

The entire TSA is just eyewash... the illusion of "something being done" presented to calm an ignorant and complacent American public. There are probably at least 100 ways to circumvent TSA "security". It's like a tripled deadbolted door on the front of a house whose windows are wide open. How long will TSA inanity continue? As long as the American public remains stupid - that is, forever.

It is a shame the public is upset, but does not understand the central issues well enough to care about this issue for the right reasons.
Dexter, FAMs don't carry 9 milimeter pistols, the the FAMS management has repeatedly told the press exactly what they do carry.
Mike, an FAA Inspector is not armed and does not need dangerous articles to do their jobs. FAMs need guns, knives, cuffs, medical gear, and other tools. Do you think the Prez' SS detail turns in their nail clippers when they board Air Force One while they maintain control of their pistols and rifles? Think buddy.
Steve, I don't know where to start... Yes I do. I WOULD like fries with that order. Thanks.
Finally, but not least Brian... I am afraid the FAMs do not enjoy great dental coverage, but I agree they may continue to need it.
This whole issue keeps coming back to mismanagement by incompetant supervisors and politicians who are unable or afraid to do the right thing. Management needs an overhaul soon. The other option is to find FAMs who put up with integrity violations and mismanagement, the current FAMs are quitting in droves.
I am saying a prayer.

We all need to pray. We need to get together, work together to solve these issues and pray.

Guys, they aren't removing the toothpaste and such from the FAMs to make sure they aren't bringing a liquid explosive...they are taking it away so they look like any other passenger. If we let all FAMs carry toothpaste and the like, then they may be more easily identified.

Smartone needs a new name. Dippy or Slow1 might work.
They were taking away articles from FAMs and aircrews for only a short time before they knew what to do. FAMs and flight crews are smart enough not to take out generally prohibited items on a plane. They hide guns, knives and handcuffs. I think a Fam is smart enough to remember not to pull out his bottle of water or protein shake until he gets to a non-sterile area of the airport.

C'mon smart one. Jenny points out a good one. Trust 'em with guns, toothpaste is a no brainer. They are fine with whatever they want to have in their baggage.

I say search the Sky Marshals. What if one of them goes crazy and tries to take over the plane?
Posted by: Aunt Betty | Sep 1, 2006 11:59:41 AM
Uhh, Aunt Betty, they got guns in the first place. What are they searching Sky Marshals for, sharp scissors?
