Top al Qaeda Man In Pakistan Nabbed

August 17, 2006 9:31 AM

Rehman3_map_nr_1 A senior al Qaeda commander allegedly tied to the London airplane bomb plot has been arrested in Pakistan, Pakistani intelligence and law enforcement officials have told ABC News. Matiur Rehman, one of the most wanted men in Pakistan, is known to have met with the alleged plot ringleader Rashid Rauf, according to the officials.

Rehman’s capture could provide the most important leads in months to the whereabouts of Al Qaeda’s top two leaders, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri. Rehman was believed to be in frequent contact with Zawahiri.

Rehman was taken into custody in the southern Punjab city of Bawalpur, the same town where alleged London plot ringleader Rashid Rauf was arrested last week. ABC News saw a copy of the police report on Rehman, with an attached copy of his photo.

Pakistani officials told ABC News earlier that 29-year Rehman was known to be planning a terror spectacular to mark the fifth anniversary of the 9/ll attacks, and the London plot may have been it.

ABC News consultant Alexis Debat, a terrorism expert at the Nixon Center in Washington D.C., says, "[Rehman] is the interface between al Qaeda's leadership and thousands, if not tens of thousands, of Pakistani militants who are able to provide the muscle for al Qaeda's operations not only in Pakistan but around the world."

To the person who made the comment about Bill Clinton:

Bill Clinton actually had many chances at Bin Laden in the 90s but bungled everytime! The most damaging point is this: he treated Bin Laden as a law enforcement problem - not a terrorist problem.

Now, please clear your noggin of the blues and try to figure out precisely why we do NOT need anymore bungling Clintons in the WH.

ive been hidin is a laugh. all he does is hide and make video tapes. have any of you ever seen video of these areas in afghanistan and pakistan where these mountain goats hide? it so high up you cannot opperate equipment. this guy, khalid and zarqawi were bigger threats than bin hidin is now. whos more important, ones trying to attack us now, or a crimminal that cannot show his face anywhere in the world, without being gunned down. sounds like success to me. ofcourse, wolfowitzs iraq plan is a different subject, ouch!

Hey Smartguy.
If Clinton were president he would be chasing skirts not terrorists!!

Probably the Democrats want to first apologize to the man for whatever it is he dislikes us for (usually their shortcommings); Then name a commission to FIX whatever they dislike of the USA and its citizens; and last, sit and wait for another 9/11 to happen. GAR

Why don't we stop wondering who to give credit to. Rather, be thankful that this guy was caught, regardless of who's in office or not.

Good. Now all we have to do is get some innocent people out of these countries and nuke em!

Maybe they should get Mike Wallace to sit down with him and interview him about why he wants to do this to us. We could also find out what he likes to do in his free time and how his family is. I think that would definatley help us understand, dont you? I have really been wondering what he thinks of President Bush and Tony Blair.

Pakistani officials armed al Qaeda for us when Afghanistan was under Soviet rule.

I still firmly believe all this is a massive hoax.. Centralization of power is the objective, along with spurring the drug trade in order to finance our larger corporations, as well as oil...

It's all about the money.

Some very interesting comments. Where to start?!? First off get what ya can out of the guy and then kill him. Any other country in the world wouldn't care and would kill the guy. No terrorist should be left alive. Hey is they want us to live by Allah then I say hey why not. Allah says kill infidels. This man is an infidel and well kill him. In fromt of everyone. Eye for an eye like the bible says. Secondly, yet Clinton had many chanes to rid the world but politics got in the way. Do you know that before all this started we actually did have bin laden in the cross hairs but the shot wasn't fired. Just like Saddam. Before the First gulf war we had a special forces team practically sitting in Saddams lap for years. But no, we could not be the assassins. What a shame.

Bill Clinton handling terrorism better than the Bush administration? We can thank Clinton for not capturing Bin Laden when the Afghanistan government offered him up. The Democrats have no idea what it takes to defend freedom they want a dependent base of voters that elect them into office. They only can complain about problems, too bad they are not smart enough to solve them.

Hey Jimmy,

Unless you suddenly lost the ability to comprehend the written word, it appears that the person in question was...arrested. You know like a police kind of law enforcement effort. Sort of like the law enforcement effort in London that lead the authorities in Packistan to him.

So apparently, law enforcement is an effective means of dealing with the issue, no?

And please, enough with all of your "its all Clintons fault" nonesense. The most disasterous policy decisions and terrible attacks all occurred under the current administrations watch, period. Grow up and accept some responsibility for a change.

Best way to extract information from these murderers ??
Tie them up against a tree in a wooded area filled with fireant nests, drizzle maple syrup in their pants, and leave them alone overnight.. and.. Voila..!! Come back next morning and they will be more than willing to spill the beans.. Simple, aint it ?? Hey, its not torture.. We are just feeding the ant colony.. ;)

I'm perplexed by the idiocy of some of these comments. Few Democrats, save Nancy Grace, would actually apologize to any terrorist. In fact, if you remember the 2004 presidential campaign, John Kerry, indeed a liberal, opposed the Iraq war because he felt it did not address the prime concerns of the misnamed War on Terror; Sen. Kerry thought that focusing on the capture of Osama bin Laden was the key to disrupting al-Queda.

To label Democrats as all being left-wing, angst-driven, spineless bleeding-hearts would be a mistake; one could just as well argue that Republicans are all elitist, trigger-happy, cold-blooded, fascist baby-killers. The facts support neither conclusion.

In reality, the left-wing "feels" whilst the right-wing "thinks"; the conservatives favor less government whilst the liberals favor more; the Democrats and Republicans simply attack and complain about each other (while standing for nothing).

Can somebody please explain to me how is it that they can find all these other "bad guys" but not bin laden? And can we please bring our troops home, it is rather obvious that they do not want our help or training that we are providing them. No matter what we do they are going to keep killing - let them kill their own people and bring our people home!! Bush needs to focus on the problems here within the US. For instance, the child abuse issue, the sexual acts against children issue, the children that are starving or being neglected or beaten just because. As for Bin Laden - he is probably sitting right here in the US on a Beach sippin' Margaritas. - and who is laughing at who these days? Get a F'n clue Bush and focus on your own country and let the others deal with their own problems for awhile!!!

Why can't our 2 party system get along? Since the minority party always tries it's best to destroy whatever the majority party is doing, I want to suggest that the party that has the most seats after an election gets ALL OF THEM so they can't 1)blame someone else for their failings and 2)be held back by someone else in their efforts. This war will never end until we ALL pull together in the fight, yes, it's a fight regardless of who thinks they can talk their way out of it with these nut cases who won't work unless it involves killing.

Why does everyone think that keeping the arrest quiet will lead to more arrests? The very second that he was arrested, word was on its way back to Bin Laden.

Posted by: Kevin | Aug 17, 2006 2:30:50 PM

Great news! Why shouldn't the press give it, all of the terrorist already knew he'd been caught. I hope Pakistan exports him to the USA so we can try and sentence him to some deep hole in the ground for life while feeding him bacon, pork chops and ham every meal. Oh, and free lard based hand lotion to keep his hands soft!

As far as the political comments, they just intend to split and divide the USA--cut out that crap and join together in joy at Rehman's capture! Another of Satin's own is down the tubes!

God bless our troops!

At least no one died while Clinton was having his consensual dalliances with Ms. Lewinsky!!

Bush has killed almost as many Americans as bin Laden and his boys.

1st of all to Brandon. Do you honestly believe that we have forgotten about Bin Laden, just because the CIA does not dissiminate to everyone what their operations section is doing? Get real, and pull your head out.

2nd to Rex. How many cutouts do you think that tape goes through, before it ever gets into the hands of the man delivering it? Dead drops, blind cutouts, and such have been a part of tradecraft since the intel business got started. Then again, it's probably in the CIA's best interest to have everyone thinking they are incompetent.
