Postmaster General Praised Big Spending Official

September 01, 2006 9:35 AM

Postal_letter_nrThe U.S. Postmaster General John Potter praised his vice president of communications Azeezaly Jaffer upon his resignation shortly after an inspector general report revealed that Jaffer spent thousands of dollars in postal funds on extravagant meals and hotels.

Potter said Jaffer "maintained a strong focus on public service in every position he has held," according to a June memo obtained by ABC News.

Potter went on to ask other Postal Service employees to join him "in thanking Azeez for his outstanding contributions in his almost 30 years of government service," the memo says.

Jaffer resigned in June less than two weeks after the postal service Inspector General's report revealed his extravagant spending and also alleged that Jaffer drank in excess at business events, at times to the point of unconsciousness, and sexually harassed female employees.

Potter's memo made no mention of the allegations in the report and said that Jaffer was leaving the service "to pursue other career opportunities."

Jaffer's attorney issued a response claiming that the Inspector General's investigation was triggered by a disgruntled postal service employee who had been having an affair with a subordinate. Jaffer had recently reassigned the subordinate, and "the employee retaliated against Mr. Jaffer by making unfounded allegations," according to Jaffer's attorney.

Regarding the expenditures, the attorney's statement said that they had all been reviewed and approved and that given the number of people that had been in attendance at the events, the cost was reasonable.

Jaffer's attorney's statement also said that no employee has ever filed a sexual harassment claim against Jaffer and that the allegations about his excessive drinking were unfounded.

As vice president of communications, Jaffer earned $164,000 a year, supervised a staff of 160 employees and managed a $20 million budget.

A spokesperson for the Postal Service said that Jaffer has resigned and is no longer performing any official duties, but he is still collecting for two months worth of accumulated vacation days. No official action was taken against him following the release of this report. He will continue to collect a paycheck from the government until Oct. 1.

This has been taken so out of content it is unbelievable. Do we live in glass houses all of the time? Look at the big picture. Any time a person leaves an organization contributing more than 20 years, they are in most cases praised for their contributions, as they very well should be. It is only the media that beats people up on their exit and get caught up in the sensationalism. Geez!! There is no perfect man or woman on earth -- Nadda! Mr. Jaffer made some bad judgement calls as an executive, but does that make him a monster and erase the many great things he has done. And does that give us a right to sit in our glass houses as if we're spotless in wrongdoing and point fingers at him. The PMG did what any great leader with character and dignity would have done. He looked at the overall big picture instead of sitting on his throne of judgement and getting petty. Give it a break already.

I'm amazed at how many people come to the defense of guys like this (see ABC's other post detailing his embezzlement).

Do you people NOT PAY TAXES?!!

(Or, is it possible that these are other embezzlers just looking out for one of their own?)

I understand he's human, and therefore not perfect, but come on -- he's not even close! We can't afford to further lower our expectations of our fellow citizens.

Who is advising and protecting the PR interests of Mr. Potter and the USPS in this PR crisis? UHM....HELLO!...it's the original Jaffer cronies themselves and they are still in contact with AJ on a daily basis. Mr Potter needs a neutral and competent PR advisor whose sole interest is the PMG and USPS. The current advisors have betrayed Mr. Potter and the USPS and need to get the hell out. Did anyone advise Mr. Potter about the PR risks involved if the OIG report was FOIA'ed BEFORE they let him praise A. Jaffer? This is serious stuff and personal AJ loyalities should NEVER interfere with the duty of protecting the USPS and PMG. Clear the entire PCES slate on the 10th floor!

This is so 'business as usual' - public official misbehaves & spends a lot of tax $ - then gets a cheery sendoff. Yes big business does that too but at least there it's not really tax revenues.

I was aware of a govt. base 10 yrs ago in San Diego where the top guy had repeated sex complaints from several of his top staff. Personell dept resolved them all quietly because 'he was a popular boss!' He should have been fired (as should Jaffer) with very little notice!

I guess I'm missing something. As a taxpayer, I'm trying to figure out why the Postal Service even has an OIG. If Mr. Potter disregards, or simply doesn't care, about wrongdoing, maybe the Postal Service should eliminate the OIG. That way, arrogant executives in the Postal Service would have more money to "appropriate" for their own benefit. I think I'm going to check with my congressman on this one.

THE POST OFFICE DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT,
DOES NOT.
USE TAX DOLLARS TO RUN ANY OPERATION.

GET A CLUE!!!!

Funny thing is if a "regular joe" employee goes 5 minutes over on lunch they talk removal, if a "regular joe" employee steals a dime they are fired and prosecuted... If the public only knew how much money is wasted on useless grievances from mismanagement...

To be able to leave a job, collect a check, not be prosecuted and not have to pay any money back while under investiagtion- man he must have the goods on someone, or have pictures.

You think he's bad. Just take a look at his clueless replacement who is enjoying this frenzy. Keep your eyes open.

The USPS seems to consider sexual harassment and other employee abuse an accepted business practice. It has been happening in our office for years. When I reported it management ganged up on me to make my life miserable! One girl committed suicide! I just filed in federal court over the abuse!

The USPS does not take tax Money! Postage is their means of support! Stamps are supposed to go up again in 2007, how do you like paying for their antics every time you mail a letter!

Posted by: employee | Sep 10, 2006 3:25:16 PM

The USPS doesn't use our tax dollars, eh?

They receive millions of dollars in tax support and subsidies each year.

And, since they're a government-owned monopoly, they do not pay state or federal taxes.

Either way, the point is that we can and should expect more from our government and corporate leaders, and they should be held accountable for their misdeeds.

If the U.S. Post Office were a private business, it would have gone out of business a long, long time ago. I OFTEN receive mail addressed to people who's address doesn't even remotely resemble mine! In your keynote address this year, you talked about how the U.S. Post Office is dedicated to customer service but there is no such thing within your system! In addition, most of your employees are minorities and they KNOW that they will not be fired because they are FAVORED! If you go to ANY post office, they are NOT customer service oriented in the least! They take their sweet time and you're lucky if there's two people working at one time to service as many as 25 people waiting in line. But do they care? Not one bit. They are the US Post Office and they know we have the choice of WAITING on them, or having to pay much, much higher prices to alternate carriers. And what do you do about it? Raise our postal rates and continue to coddle the lazy employees who know they won't be fired! You think you have such a good system in place but I have had more pieces of mail totally lost and the most likely cause has been because it was delivered incorrectly and when that happens, most people just toss the mail in the trash if it doesn't belong to them. I've also received certified mail at least 4 times in the past few months where I SHOULD have signed for the letter. Instead, the lazy carrier just stuck it in the mail box and off he/she went. If you're paying for this service, what good does it do when things like this occur? In this particular case, this has cost me a GREAT deal of money.

Is there anyone out there that has stories from their offices of abuse of employees and managements failure to provide an environment free of hostility and harassment.

Recently in the small town of Burwell, Nebraska a local boy who was killed in Iraq was laid to rest. All of the national flags in town were flown at half staff except for the flag at the United States Post Office. To think that a presidential order was required to fly the federal flag at half staff in a small town for a young man who died while wearing an army uniform in the federal servide staggers my imagination. Could not the postmasters of the towns in which military burials for service personnel who died while on active service are conducted lower the national flag on their own authority?
