Rep. Foley's Opponent Calls for an Investigation into Allegations of Inappropriate E-mails with Former Page
September 28, 2006 3:40 PM
The Democratic opponent of Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) is calling for an investigation into allegations that a 16-year-old male who had worked as a congressional page alerted Capitol Hill staffers after an e-mail exchange with Congressman Foley that the young man said "freaked me out."
"This is a matter for the appropriate authorities to investigate," said a spokesperson for the campaign of Tim Mahoney.
Rep. Foley's office says the e-mails were entirely appropriate and that their release is part of an "ugly smear campaign" by his opponent.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
Mahoney's campaign spokesperson, Jessica Santillo, said the campaign only recently became aware of the e-mails between Foley and the page.
"The seriousness of these allegations goes far beyond the tit for tat of a political campaign," she said in a statement to ABC News. "The allegations of the Foley campaign are without merit."
In the series of e-mails, obtained by ABC News, from Rep. Foley to the former page, Foley asks the young man how old he is, what he wants for his birthday and requests a photo of him.
The e-mails began within weeks of the end of the young man's stint as a congressional page. He did not intern or work for Rep. Foley's office.
The concerned young man alerted congressional staffers to the e-mails. In one email, he writes to a staffer, "Maybe it is just me being paranoid, but seriously. This freaked me out."
Mahoney's campaign spokesperson said that they believe the matter should be fully investigated.
"It is our understanding that a complaint was filed by the alleged victim, and that complaint should be fully investigated," said Santillo.
Foley's office said there is no official investigation into the matter and that Foley is only guilty of being friendly.
In response to the Mahoney campaign's calls for an investigation, Foley's spokesman released this statement: "The emails in question were a response to a handwritten thank you letter from a former page. There have not been any allegations made by anyone except by Tim Mahoney and the Democrats who are attempting to misrepresent a series of innocent communications to prop up a failing political campaign."
Read the entire statement from a spokesperson for congressional candidate Mahoney.

Some of these apologists for unprofessional, un-Congressional, just plain weird and suspect behavior, are astounding.
It's just more of the Karl Rove School of Tactical Response, i.e., deny, deny. deny. They got pictures?...they don't tell the complete story. They have you on tape?...been doctored. They catch you having carnal knowledge of a goat on Main Street?....hey look, the goat was part of a terrorist plot, I was only investigating to protect the American public. Oh, and there is a Representative in Nigeria who has a billion dollars stashed in a bank for you if you will just send him your account number.

What a coincidence! All these "lifelong" Dems and independents reciting the GOP talking points -- and so promptly. Amazing.
Now if Foley were a Democrat, would this strangely belligerent "shoot the messenger" approach be EXACTLY the same? Or would it be used for more Swift Boating that we all remember so well?

LOL - another Republican scandal sure makes the apologists jump on the old keyboard to slam the victim and defend the creepy old Rebulican guy trying to engage with a minor no less! SHAME on you people, Foley wanted this kid for his own sexual purposes period. VOTE DEMOCRAT.

Foley resigned pretty darned quickly with an apology for letting down his family, which is telling in itself. I am guessing there is even more to this scandal than what is already known. At least the scandal broke before the election and not after.

I surmise that Foley has deep, deep personal and sexual problems and the whole thing should be taken off the front page - for his sake, his family's sake and the boy involved, plus any other victims' sake.
Sigh, Rick

after researching the emails suppsoedly sent by congressman foley, the conclussion reached is that he is a sick individual that needs help.

No matter what political party you are affiliated with, a pedophile is a pedophile. There aren't "nice" ones and "mean" ones, they are sick individuals who pray after children, your children. So, for those people who say that this is all a misunderstanding, what if we didn't catch Foley this time, and your child happened to be his next victim? Stop making this a Republican vs. a Democrat issue and about a crime against our children.

He is just sick and that's all there is to say about it. I don't understand why he would think he could actually get away with that?

I'm seriously laughing endlessly at the posts on top defending this man.
