Follow the Bouncing Bribe Scandal: Keeping Tabs on the Abramoff Lobbying Investigation

October 31, 2006 10:48 AM

Abramoff_scandal_nrWith another figure in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal beginning an 18-month prison sentence, here's an update on the key players and where the investigation stands:

Jack Abramoff: The once powerful D.C. lobbyist pleaded guilty to bribery and corruption charges last January, but sentencing has been postponed twice to give him more time to cooperate with government investigators. ABC News has learned he's spending "hours and hours" talking to FBI agents and detailing his relationships with dozens of members of Congress. Abramoff is scheduled to begin serving almost six years in prison on Nov. 15 for a separate Florida fraud conviction.  He will go before a federal judge in Washington for sentencing in the bribery case in December.

Apg_safavian_061027_nrDavid Safavian: Former chief of staff of the General Services Administration, Safavian is the only one implicated in the scandal so far who didn't cop a plea; he went to trial and was convicted in federal court last June. Safavian was convicted of accepting lavish favors from Abramoff, including a 2002 golf trip to Scotland, while helping Abramoff make business deals with the GSA. Safavian was sentenced Oct. 27 to 18 months in prison.

Bob_ney_court_nrRep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio): Ney pleaded guilty Oct. 13 on federal charges of conspiracy and making false statements. He lied on financial disclosure forms about the now infamous golf trip to Scotland and also permitted a Syrian businessman to bankroll two gambling trips to London in 2003. Sentencing is scheduled for January. House Republican leaders say they'll move to expel Rep. Ney when Congress reconvenes after the elections, but until then he continues to draw his $165,200-a-year salary.

So far this year, Ney has spent at least $296,500 in campaign funds on legal fees, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Delay_tom_nrFormer House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas): DeLay stepped down from Congress to fight unrelated charges of illegal fundraising in Texas. ABC News reported DeLay took numerous trips at Abramoff's expense, including a first-class golf trip to Scotland in 2000; DeLay claimed he was unaware of the "logistics" of paying for that trip. Sources told ABC News that Abramoff was providing details of his dealings with DeLay, but DeLay has not been charged in that investigation.

Burns_conrad_nr_1Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.): Sen. Burns received $150,000 in campaign contributions from Abramoff and his clients -- more than any other member of Congress. The money has since been returned to its original donors or given to charity. Abramoff said in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, "Every appropriation we wanted [from Burns' committee] we got," but Burns says, "I have done nothing wrong," and he has not been charged with any crime.

Ap_ralph_reed_061031_nrRalph Reed: Former director of the Christian Coalition and a business associate of Abramoff's, Reed was tarnished by his Abramoff connection and lost his primary race for lieutenant governor of Georgia. Reed maintains he did not know Abramoff was breaking the law, and he has not been charged with any crime. He and Abramoff are being sued by a Texas Indian tribe that claims they used fraud and racketeering to shut down the tribe's casino, allegedly to benefit an Abramoff client who owned a rival casino.

Ap_scanlon_061031_nrMichael Scanlon: Scanlon left his job as an aide to then Rep. Tom DeLay to work at Abramoff's lobbying firm. He pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to corruptly influence public officials and is cooperating with the Justice Department.

Ap_rudy_tony_061031_nrTony Rudy: Another former DeLay staffer who went to work for Abramoff, Rudy also pleaded guilty and is cooperating with investigators.

Ap_volz_niel_061031_nr_2Neil Volz: Rep. Bob Ney's former chief of staff, he admitted conspiring with Abramoff to influence the congressman and is cooperating with investigators. His testimony helped convict David Safavian.

Ralston_susan_nr_1Susan Ralston: A former Abramoff staffer who went to work for White House political strategist Karl Rove, she resigned on Oct. 6 after a Congressional report showed she accepted gifts from Abramoff. A White House spokeswoman said Ralston "did not want to be a distraction to the White House at this important time," a month before midterm elections.

Brian this is the real problem with your party. You can not for the life of you talk about the presant or the future as you are too busy talking about stuff that has ran its course. If you bleeding liberals would stop acting like idiots and join your country in defeating the enemy this war would go a lot more quickly and much smoother. The liberal media meaning cnn, nbc, abc and the new york times has set themselves up to be America's worst enemy. You talk a good game but the folks see right through you losers!Did you not learn anything from cbs and dan rather?

John Counts posting sounds like a
page from Carl Rove's playbook, but like all "Bush-ites" offers no substance what so ever. Brian Ross
and other true journalists expose
the corruption of Abramoff and others and you think it's nothing
then you change the subject to Iraq and "stay the course" with one cliche after another. Make a point with out name calling if you can.

You know who is America's worst enemy, an uninformed citizen. That is America's worst enemy.

I think anyone involved with Abramoff should be stripped of their title and benefits. Its a sad day when the voice of the American people is not heard over the glow of presents from lobbyists, that is when Washington has lost touch with the people. They sold our voice.

I think people can sit there and blame the media for the story, but the media didn't accept the gifts from Abramoff, the people who are supposed to be serving us did. Therefore I don't think its the media's fault. If exposing a story of corruption is liberal reporting, then I want more of the liberal reporting. Republican or Democrat, wrong is wrong, Period. Good work, Brian Ross.

Response to John Counts:

Here is an article about how congressional staff and representatives have been selling out the American people for $$ and you claim that the media is "America's worst enemy"?

I for one thought, upon seeing this article, "Good, someone is going to wrap up where things stand." The number of indicted and implicated Republican lawmakers is too long to be able to follow this story piecemeal.

I had no idea so many had already plead guilty in the Abramoff scandal!

Oh, come on Mr. Counts! You seemed to be programmed to tout the party line that is exposed and now failing. You pull the liberal media card to fan the smoke of fear and corruption. So where do you get your information? Rush Limbuagh? Mr. Hannity of Fox News? Your type is the blind, leading the blind.

Thank god for the press, elections, and the "liberal media."

-and that's just petty Republican organized crime in comparison to the covert activity conducted against the American People since the NSA became Karl Rove's personal political dirty tricks machine. It makes the Boulis murder look like child's play.

It was very depressing when I looked at nightline in regards to the earmarks with american for prosperity piece. to know that 100,000.00 was spent on story telling in tennesse, and 1/2 a million went for a teapot musuem in sparta north carolina, is this the way government intends to spend tax payers money, what about the homeless, the people with aids the kids that are abused, people being homeless because america decides to out source jobs so no jobs are available, what about the prisoners that has been released or about to be released why dont we spend some of the billions in fixing our own first, then go abroad.

wait till we see how many Dems are involved. Politicians are all crooks to some degree. It the nature of the business.
I cant wait till the media gets a hold of this scoundrel Harry Reid. And what about the suspicious land deal that Obama was involved in?
It apprears Dems, who have always been slicker being crooked than stupid republicans, are now using real estate transactions to wash their and their contributors cash. Republicans take golf trips and Dems take millions in personal profits.

Has Mr. Ross chronicled the $90,000.00 found in Mr. Jefferson's freezer? Unfortunately, many politicians take advantage of their power. Reporters like Mr. Ross label themselves as leftist media by consistantly hammering the conversative leaders. The wrondoings of the Clintons, Kerry's SUV's, Kennedy's swimming expeditions go unmentioned which explains why informed America sees through them. Remember Dan Rather and Mary Mapes? Case closed.

"Republican organized crime?" and "Karl Rove's personal political dirty tricks machine.?"
Get off the pot! It takes both to really screw out congress up. Both democrats and republicans. You democrats act like you are saint peter or some holier than thou person.
Trust me, democratic heads will roll too. I am going to laugh my head off when all that is left is the tiny little party of libertarians like me! Then we will just make legal all the things that cause the scandals and set the country back on its feet and give it a fresh start saying good riddance to the dirty dems and rotten repubs!!!!!!!

Brian,
How aggresive will you dig to get the facts and do your daily drum beat to expose who the 6-8 corrupt Democratic Senators are?? why keep them on the back burner?? .I am sure ABC knows who they are or as we often are told "our sources tell us"...why deal with staffers???small people in the power structure...all they do is offer acess. The real corruption is with our Senators...Again 6-8 Democratic Senators versus one Republican..were is the fair and accurate reporting?? ...Seems like the Democrats are the party of corruption....when will ABC and Brian stop being a schill in that echo chamber of liberal and bias reporting and beat the drum every day for 2 years ,as you delighted in your lame attempt to say you are exposing Republican corruption .The bigger story would have been the 6-8 Democratic Senators.....It will come out,not by main stream media but from alternative media ,the depth by which the Democratic party was up to their necks in corruption. Then you will be forced to address the issue...The public would then ask themselves...When did the main street media know about them and why did they not report this ...It will come out that the Democrats will make Republicans look like a novice in the scope and depth of the duplicity and corruption .The main stream media will carry thier water and make it a one day story. That is why in less than a generation the main stream media and your echo chamber of liberal bias deguised as investigative reporting...If a story does not fall in your lap and does not meet your bias you pass on it..that is why the term investigative reporting is a joke...and that is why this type of media will continue to shrink and become even less of a factor in American life.....keep it up ....

Not to worry, you libs and media, you won't be left out. Abramoff is singing like a canary and soon those "uncorruptable" dem senators will be running for the hills. The culture of corruption lives on!

Wow! What blind idealism from both sides.

Republicans: They may be corrupt but by golly they fight a better war.

Democrats: They may be weak on defense but boy can they route corruption.

You all need to to see how many congressmen are on the take. Democrats need to ask themselves why they support Murtha if the want to clean up corruption.

The real actuality of the situation is congress has two type of congressmen; those visibly corrupt and thos not caught yet. The only way I can see to reduce this corruption is term limits on congressmen. Don't give them enough time to build their good ol' boy networks.

It's not that Democrats are slicker it just they don't resign when caught. IE William Jefferson, the man with 90,000 in bribe cash found in his freezer.

Posted by: pcnav | Nov 15, 2006 12:49:20 PM

Is this amazing or what- the MSM finaly does it job AFTER the election! Hannity had the dirt on Reid last year-66-68,000 from Abramoff clients but the MSM was not interested in the story then. This is just like Dems, even if they are caught/found guilty the NEVER resign(Jefferson, Clinton, Murtha) because their people(liberal) continue to vote them back in office. If a Republican does something wrong( Ney, Foley) it becomes a NATIONAL story and all republicans are BAD, according to MSM and Dems. What a double standard !!

As a member of the Eastern Pequot tribe in Connecticut, I'd sure like to know if and to what extent Abramoff's influence reached into Connecticut/New England and whether he cut deals with Senators Dodd or Lieberman or other Reps, the Mashantuckets or Mohegan tribes, or someone at the Interior Department or the Bureau of Indian Affairs to have our approval for federal recognition [and likely casino plans] overturned on appeal for the first time in BIA's history. It's very unlikely he'd overlook the most profitable Native gaming venue on earth during his conquests.

When you finally get around to moving that old piece of furniture to clean, it's amazing at how much dirt has collected underneath and behind it. Yet, you dusted it everyday. After six years of Republican control of our government, the people have seen that the fox has truly run amuck in the hen house. When you have free reign of the cookie jar and no oversight, what happens? You think you can just 'make more cookies'. Well, America has had enough of One Party Rule. Look at where it's gotten us? Whether it's the Liberal Media or Bush slanted Press, the one thing that can't be twisted are the facts. If you dig deep enough, they'll eventually come out.
