Half Million in Legal Fees from Campaign War Chest for California Congressman

October 17, 2006 8:06 PM

Jerry_lewis_nrCalifornia Congressman Jerry Lewis (R-CA), who is facing multiple federal corruption probes, has used campaign contributions to pay over half a million dollars in legal fees in just the past three months, according to quarterly reports filed last Friday with the Federal Election Commission.

The reports show Lewis paid the Los Angeles-based firm Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher a total of $569,096 in legal fees.

"This is an extremely unusual, large expenditure in a short period of time," said Kent Cooper of Political Money Line, a Web site that tracks money and politics. "This will shock many people on the Hill to the reality of the seriousness of his legal problems and also provide a clue to the depth of the investigation," said Cooper.

In a written statement a spokesperson for Rep. Lewis told ABC News:

"Congressman Lewis has availed himself of excellent legal representation so that this matter may be resolved expeditiously. We are confident that Congressman Lewis has honorably served his constituents and that he will be fully exonerated once this investigation is completed."

Campaign finance experts said the half million dollar expense is not illegal as long as the money is spent on legal issues related to the congressman's official duties in office.

More evidence that The Republican Led Congress is a Congress of "Moral Values" See Randy Cunningham, Tom DeLay, Bob Ney, Mark Foley, Jim Kolbe, etc, etc, etc.

Republican Democrat what difference does in make, they are all politicians and as such they are above the law, and very arrogant besides. TERM LIMITS was the only answer, they is lost forever, just as our country will be by the people allowing politicians to have free rein over the country. Politicians and lawyers, scum bags!!! Oh! most politicians are lawyers??

"Campaign finance experts said the half million dollar expense is not illegal as long as the money is spent on legal issues related to the congressman's official duties in office."

The above quote from your last paragraph says it all. Quick research on California legal fees revealed one S.F. lawyer charging $350 an hour. So $550 an hour for a top notch firm is in the realm of possibility. The $550,000+ 3-month total would mean about 1,000 hours of legal work spread between, say, 3 attorneys working 33 hours a week for 10 weeks.

Sounds to me like we should be more outraged at the cost of CA attorneys! If he's guilty...throw the bum out. But don't insinuate illegality based on legal use of campaign funds to defend himself.

What is so great about our country is that we can send off our kids to die in meaningless wars to protect our congressmen's right to steal our money and morality, and then hide behind their corrupt part structures. Isn't freedom great for those with the power and the ability to fool you fools into voting them into office in the first place.

The idea that all politicians are the same is another myth perpatrated by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and the and the Republican party.
What has the Republican Party ever done for the people of America, accept install false hate, destroy the middle class, the unions voting block, rob the US treasury, produce hideous acts throughout the world and create misery for the human race. You show me a Republican that does not lie, steal,or hide behind a pseudo Christian faith. And I will show you a misslead Liberal about to happen. If Republicans go to Heaven, send me to Hell, I couldn't bare the thought of spending an eternity with such untrustworthy, unpatriotic, trash.

So Jackie, not all politicians are the same? But all Republicans are? Do you actually believe that there has never been a Democrat who lied or stole? There's good and bad on both sides of the fence.

The survival of democracy is dependent on succcessful representative government; and that is conditioned upon the practice of electing to public offices only those individuals who are technically trained, intellectually compent, socially loyal, and morally fit. Only by such provisions can government of the people, by the people, and for the people be preserved.

The evolution of a pratical and efficient form of representative govern require Statesmanship Schools.

How can using campaign donations for legal fees (against criminal prosecution) be legal? Maybe such a realization will make American taxpayers pause and think long and hard about donating to PACs, which may in turn take the money out of politics.

Legal can trump moral in a physical world. Morals are all you have in a spiritual world. Make your choices wisely.
Do Politicians see legal first and stop there?
