New Foley Instant Messages; Had Internet Sex While Awaiting House Vote

October 03, 2006 1:22 PM

Apr_mark_foley_061002_nr_1Former Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) interrupted a vote on the floor of the House in 2003 to engage in Internet sex with a high school student who had served as a congressional page, according to new Internet instant messages provided to ABC News by former pages.

ABC News now has obtained 52 separate instant message exchanges, which former pages say were sent by Foley, using the screen name Maf54, to two different boys who began their exchanges with Foley at the age of 16 and 17, and continued through the age of 18.

This message was dated April 2003, at approximately 7 p.m., according to the message time stamp at a time when the teen had been 18 for just six weeks. (Some sharp online readers spotted that the boy was technically legal when the exchange took place).

Maf54: I miss you
Teen:   ya me too
Maf54: we are still voting
Maf54: you miss me too

The exchange continues in which Foley and the teen both appear to describe having sexual orgasms.

Maf54: ok..i better go vote..did you know you would have this effect on me
Teen:   lol I guessed
Teen:   ya go vote…I don't want to keep you from doing our job
Maf54: can I have a good kiss goodnight
Teen:   :-*
Teen:   <kiss>

The House voted that evening on HR 1559, Emergency War Time supplemental appropriations.

According to another message, Foley also invites the teen and a friend to come to his house near Capitol Hill so they can drink alcohol.

Teen:   are you going to be in town over the veterans day weekend
Maf54: I may be now that your coming
Maf54: who you coming to visit
Teen:   haha good stuff
Teen:   umm no one really

Maf54: we will be adjourned ny then
Teen:   oh good
Maf54: by
Maf54: then we can have a few drinks
Maf54: lol
Teen:   yes yes ;-)
Maf54: your not old enough to drink
Teen:   shhh…
Maf54: ok
Teen:   that's not what my ID says
Teen:   lol
Maf54: ok
Teen:   I probably shouldn't be telling you that huh
Maf54: we may need to drink at my house so we don't get busted

This is not just a republican thing, and it should not be made political. This is about sick perverts that need to be run out of town. Before this is all over, there will be blood on both sides of the isle.......

This is a SETUP! Who ever saves instant message?

Posted by: Field | Oct 3, 2006 2:08:53 PM

Regardless of any political affiliation if what the former pages are saying is true, just about any member of congress should have known about this. Throw them all out!

If he's blaming alcohol, that means he was drunk AND having virtual sex while he was supposed to be voting in congress! This is beyond sick. Shame on anyone who is trying to change the subject and blame Clinton for this (believe it or not, Sean Hannity and Brit Hume both did). And shame on those who tried to cover this disgusting offense up.

We'll never know who knew what, or when, but as the father of a teen, and a conservative, I'd like to see our side "clean house" on this predatory issue. There's no place for it in our Congress or society and we voters need to take a good look at who we're sending to DC to represent us. Foley and his ilk certainly do not represent me.

Why is all this information coming out now?

Foley deserves to be locked up.

But the timing reeks of politics.

Why is ABC News, and Brian Ross specifically, drip drip dripping these IMs so slowly? This is why people think this is more about politics than the public's need to know. These are all IMs between Foley and the same 2 pages but, for some reason, it has taken 5 days, so far, for ABC News to leak this out? Why not release it ALL at once? Why is ABC intentionally dragging it out so that they have a BREAKING NEWS headline everyday? JUST RELEASE IT ALL! Or is this all simply for ratings??

JCJC makes a good point, if his excuse was that he was an alcoholic and that these episodes occured when he was drunk, then he has to have by his own admission been drunk while voting on legislation.

This is a serious issue and has been dealt with as Rep. Foley has resigned. Now comes the politicization of the whole affair. If there was so much of a concern for the kid involved this would have reported a long time ago, especially since ABC and other news outlets have been sitting on this for awhile now. Wow, what a political hit job. Lets now get on with what affect our lives- the war, economy, etc.

How convenient that ABC news trickles this out over a period of days. How long will you be able to get ratings over this perversion? How long was ABC a party to this? Ratings over children - typical American media. Foley isn't the only party that is disgusting.

Posted by: chicago | Oct 3, 2006 2:12:32 PM

I don't remember "stop propositioning underage children" being listed in the twelve steps . . . and the issue isn't Foley, it is leadership, coverup, and decisionmaking.

I hear rumors that the FBI knew about some of these e-mails months ago. This is all too sicko for me. Its time for regime change. And since power corrupts so thoroughly, we ought to legalize term limits - and throw Foley and a few other folks in jail. Show the world that the "I'm an alcoholic" excuse is no excuse.

Posted by: Debo | Oct 3, 2006 2:12:48 PM

So What does this do for profiling preditors? is anybody safe anymore.?

Posted by: Ron | Oct 3, 2006 2:14:43 PM

I remember how angry the speaker was when the FBI dared to approach their hallowed offices. Im a life-long conservative but it's time for all incumbents to leave Washington. The speaker is a hyrocrite as he makes himself a wealthy man. Doesn't any resign anymore?

Posted by: Ed Flynn | Oct 3, 2006 2:15:05 PM

I am appalled at those of you who are calling for the Republican leadship to resign or to be put in jail before having seen any facts to implicate them. We have a system of Justice that should be followed. You may find that it is the other side of the house that actually knew about this.

Posted by: honestypays | Oct 3, 2006 2:15:23 PM

I think they should take away any pension that he had coming and use it for the counciling sessions that the pages need. If this is what goes on in Congress, no wonder the world is in the shape it is in. This is disgusting!!!!

Posted by: sharon | Oct 3, 2006 2:15:36 PM

What a twisted, sick man! You don't do this with kids! What a shame.

Posted by: Mike | Oct 3, 2006 2:15:41 PM

This is so unreal. He is a sick man to even be typing this to a child! But this also reads like someone is telling him what to type. Is this whole thing a set-up for political gain? It makes me wonder???? The answers this child comes back with almost sounds coached?

Posted by: tipton | Oct 3, 2006 2:15:41 PM

i am wondering who has also endangered these kids. Ross is saying he had the emails back in AUGUST! Several FL newspapers had the bad on Foley as well back then. Foley is not to be excused one bit, but looks like this was also a nicely conducted Oct political surprise that was surpressed! what about that, aren't these people also endangering kids if they knew earlier as well? My guess dems/liberals are giddy as a school boy page over this now! Politics have been played over this at the expense of getting FOley out and away from male pages by all parties! Brian Ross said he was too busy to look at the emails, HaHa..LOL too.
