Chief Suspect in Madrid Train Bombings Sentenced in Italy

Madrid_train_bombing_mohamed_nrOne of the chief suspects in the Madrid train bombings of 2004 was sentenced in Milan, Italy, today for "subversive association aimed at international terrorism."

Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, also known as "Mohamed the Egyptian," was sentenced to 10 years in prison but is expected to soon be extradited to Spain to join a larger upcoming trial for the Madrid train bombings.

This February, 29 suspects will be face trial in Madrid on charges ranging from terrorist killings and attempted murder to lesser crimes, such as forging documents.

On March 11, 2004, 190 people were killed when terrorists planted 11 bags containing bombs with cell phone timers on commuter trains in Spain. The suspects in the bombings are thought by Spanish authorities to be part of a larger European al Qaeda network.
