Mark Foley Back in Florida

November 16, 2006 8:55 PM

Ld_foley2_061017_nr_3 Mark Foley has interrupted his stay at an Arizona rehabilitation facility to return to West Palm Beach, Fla., to attend private funeral services for his 85-year-old father, who had been ill with cancer.

Foley also faces possible state criminal charges in Florida as a result of an ongoing investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, ABC News has learned.

"The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an active criminal investigation into incidents, which may have occurred in Florida with regards to inappropriate communications between Mr. Foley and former House pages," a spokesperson told ABC News today.

The Florida state criminal investigation was initiated at the request of Governor Jeb Bush on Sept. 30, the day Foley resigned from Congress, following the revelation of sexually explicit e-mails between Foley and underage congressional pages.

While state law enforcement agents have been assisting the FBI with the federal inquiry into Foley's conduct, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting its own separate criminal investigation as well, a spokesperson confirmed to ABC News today.

The Palm Beach Post newspaper first reported that Foley had returned to Florida on Wednesday to attend his father's funeral.  WPTV, an NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach, published a photo of Foley leaving the home of friends.

Foley's attorney David Roth did not return phone calls from reporters, but issued a statement requesting the media permit the family to grieve privately.

Why is it that if it were me, or any other "Joe," we would have already been arrested and tossed in jail? What about all those men who were arrested for sending instant messages to underage girls on MSNBC's "To Catch A Predator?" Why did he go into alcohol rehab? Why did he accuse a Priest of molesting him decades ago? What in the world does any of that have to do with what he's done? I don't get it...

You know, while we are waiting to see what charges are going to be pursued in the Foley case...Why don't we go ahead and draft a few for the other members of our "esteemed government" who knew of these horrible crimes against children. I do not believe the "Don't ask; don't tell" policy should extend to child predators and those who turn a blind eye to child abuse. I am staunch conservative and shame on all of those, Foley included, who once again gave us a black eye.

Without a doubt Mark Foley has engaged in unacceptable communication with a teenager. Without a doubt he has violated the trust of his constituents as well as basic moral responsibility. The alcoholism and previous molestation charges are just as they appear, distractions that quite frankly insult the popular intelligence. With that having been said, to say "What goes around comes around" when a persons father has passed away is qute frankly a mere gross act of karmic reductionism and quite plainly speaks poorly of the poster . Of course our government is corruptable as it is comprised of people. Checks and balances - thats the magic of our system, not the pseudo dieties whom we sometimes find in office. I for one wish Mr. Foley peace in his time of sorrow, which should not be confused with approving of his conduct.

Where's that Foley scandal report we were promised? Did the Republican "Hide the evidence" machine "Misplace" it? Or is it simply "still being investigated"?

oh, that report is somewhere with the outed CIA agent report

I think it's great that Florida is investigating the private instant messaging between Mark Foley and the adult former page. (Of course if President Bush had initiated it, everyone would be screaming "invasion of privacy" and "domestic spying" and the lot.)

By the way, speaking of presidents, how's that investigation going into President Clinton's actual sex with interns and campaign workers, both consensual and non-consensual?

I'm sure that anyone with panties awad over the internet messages of a Congressman must be exponentially outraged over actual sexual predation by the leader of the free world. No hypocrisy among this crowd, right?

The age of consent in Argentina is 15.

Eagle,
Cute.
Bush hasn't investigated anything on his watch. You know that.
Clinton?
Get over it! He's been investigated as much, to date, as Bush will in '09...and that, my friend, won't be pretty.
As far as his daughters go; well, apples don't fall far from the tree.
