U.S. Embassy Asks Bush Twins to Leave Country

November 27, 2006 1:18 PM

Joe Goldman and Rhonda Schwartz Report:

Bush_twins_soccer_nrAmid a growing barrage of front-page headlines, U.S. embassy officials "strongly suggested" President Bush's twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, cut short their trip to Buenos Aires because of security issues, U.S. diplomatic and security sources tell ABC News.

But the girls have stayed on, celebrating their 25th birthday over the weekend and producing even more headlines about their activities.

Officials say the media coverage upstaged publicity plans for the new U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne, who had only recently arrived in the country.

Neither the White House nor the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires responded to requests for comment.

The Argentinean press blitz followed a report on "The Blotter" last week that Barbara Bush's purse and cell phone were stolen last weekend while dining at the popular San Telmo outdoor marketplace despite being guarded by the Secret Service.

Stories of the twins' visit took on wild proportions in the Argentinean press. One tabloid headline had the young women running nude in the hallway of their hotel, a report the hotel staff denied to ABC News.

According to sources, the U.S. embassy encouraged the two girls to cut their stay short because the added attention was making their security very difficult.

But to the dismay and anger of some U.S. embassy and security staff, the girls stayed on.

Thursday night, an ABC News producer was able to walk into their hotel unchecked and engage Barbara Bush in conversation while she checked her e-mail on a computer in the lobby. Jenna sat talking with friends on a sofa nearby. No Secret Service agents were anywhere to be seen in the lobby, according to ABC News' Joe Goldman.

And yesterday the Bush twins were spotted at the Sunday soccer matches, wearing team jerseys and sitting in the owner's box, watching Argentina's top team Boca Juniors compete. Several games have been canceled due to violence in the crowds this year. In fact, last weekend no spectators were allowed to attend the match other than season ticket holders.

Sources tell ABC News the twins plan to stick to their original itinerary and stay in Buenos Aires until Thursday.

Official response from the US Embassy in Argentina:

We have seen a report from news sources stating that Embassy officials strongly suggested that President Bush’s daughters curtail their visit in Argentina.

This is false, as are other aspects of the report referring to the Embassy’s position on the visit.

The Embassy welcomes the visit and has provided close support and cooperation.

You really cannot expect these young girls to take their security issues seriously, but their parents, being the President and First Lady, surely ought to be able to order their daughters home. Apparently he isn't any better at being a father than he is at being a President (and this, sadly, from someone who voted for him)......

Spoiled Brats.

Posted by: David | Nov 27, 2006 1:55:09 PM

once again, why is this news? so what they are the daughters of the dumbest leader on this planet? I do not wish them ill but, once again, I personally do not care to know that most likely it is my tax dollars paying for their security and financing a senseless war.

I read through this article twice. Can you please point out to me WHERE there is substantive news in this drivel?

Posted by: Cliff | Nov 27, 2006 2:10:35 PM

They just young ladies having a good time. Let's not make them a political target because they don't belong in the equation. Leave them alone.

Posted by: carlos a. garcia | Nov 27, 2006 2:12:06 PM

Does no one else find it odd that ABC doesn't have a problem with the fact that these two 25-year-old women are repeatedly referred to as "girls" throughout this article?

Posted by: Daph- | Nov 27, 2006 2:16:44 PM

Looks like they are becoming just like their father — arrogant and cocky.

Posted by: Jamie | Nov 27, 2006 2:29:50 PM

Is USA so bad at security that it cannot guarantee the safety of the president's children when they travel overseas?

Let the young women enjoy themselves. But, why aren't the Secret Service standing watch over them in the hotel lobby?

Posted by: TFG | Nov 27, 2006 2:36:38 PM

"...a report on 'The Blotter' last week that Barbara Bush's purse and cell phone were stolen last weekend while dining at the popular San Telmo outdoor marketplace...."

Which raises the question of exactly what the purse and the cell phone were eating....

They are spoiled brats. Why would they do anything to help, even if they are being asked to help themselves!

Posted by: Liz Morris | Nov 27, 2006 2:37:08 PM

NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO THEM. THEY ARE AS SAFE AS THEY WOULD BE BACK HERE IN THE STATES.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THEY HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN GOOD FOR AMERICA'S IMAGE IN ARGENTINA AND LATIN AMERICA.

MOST LATINS SEE AMERICANS AS BEING STUCK UP AND DISTANT. THEY ARE INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE ON ALL LEVELS. THE SOCCER MATCH THEY WENT TO SEE WAS IN BOCA JUNIORS HOME STADIUM, IN A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT IS IN THE MOST WORKING CLASS AREA OF BUENOS AIRES.

Who said they would listen to someones advice?

Posted by: bob graham | Nov 27, 2006 2:39:10 PM

Holy Horrors - an ABC reporter was able to talk to Barbara Bush without being attacked by the Secret Service! Like an ABC reporter who covers the Bush's is the same as a random person walking around.

Typical journalists, trying to make up news.

Posted by: biznarich | Nov 27, 2006 2:40:53 PM

It's just sad that the twins don't understand what effect they have on their father - regardless of whether any of us agree with his politics - any public figure and his or her spouse / child will be scrutinized more closely than an average person's family.

That being said, if this is all about upstaging an ambassador, then that is sad.

If it is about national security or our relationship with Argentina, then so be it, get them home now.

Posted by: chris | Nov 27, 2006 2:42:59 PM

WHO CARES?

Posted by: Douglas Lang | Nov 27, 2006 2:43:49 PM

I don't understand what the Bush twins did to warrant the Argentine government to ask them to leave. The government thinks that they are a security risk? What do they think 2 young girls are going to do? Overthrow the government? Start a riot? Over reacting? or Anti-American.

Posted by: Molly O'Neil | Nov 27, 2006 2:44:02 PM

ABC really wants to trash the Bush family at any cost.

I don't remember Chelsea Clinton getting this much scrunity and if so, not in a negative way.

Posted by: Lisa | Nov 27, 2006 2:45:23 PM

If it's true that an ABC producer could engage Barbara while no Secret Service personnel were to be seen, and Jenna was similarly unprotected, this is a very serious and dangerous situation. We Americans don't realize how patriotic and protective of our people we are until the worst happens.

Posted by: AG | Nov 27, 2006 2:47:04 PM

What are these two girls trying to start, another war. We the American people cannot expect the secret service to protect them if they insist on making themselves targets for anyone to take revenge on them for what has happened in the Middle East. Just goes to prove that some of the very rich feel that they are untouchable and get away with anything they want to. Just goes to show also how they were raised without respect for others and their wellbeing.

Posted by: Nancy | Nov 27, 2006 2:48:42 PM

Molly, can you read??? the Argentines didn't ask them to leave, it was OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.

Posted by: Rick | Nov 27, 2006 2:49:05 PM

Molly: Read the article again. It says that the US Embassy is asking them to leave, not the Argentinian government. Doh!

Posted by: Mike | Nov 27, 2006 2:49:58 PM

Again, who cares?

Posted by: Rip | Nov 27, 2006 2:50:18 PM

Some jerk like Chavez or Castro might order someone to kidnap the twins in order to blackmail the U.S.A. Communists, Deomcrats- Chavez - whats the difference. If they can hurt the USA, they will do it.

Posted by: Richard | Nov 27, 2006 2:50:27 PM

Ah let them have fun, if they have problems they can blame their stupid father.

What do they expect when the father is a world renowned terrorist.

Posted by: Billie Bob | Nov 27, 2006 2:50:38 PM

its not about what the twins did! do you not understand that if it is easy to get to the twins then anyone can get to the twins? Imagine the power a rogue nation or terrorist would have over the United States if one of the twins were kidnapped? Argentina wants them to leave because it is too hard to keep them safe- as is evident by a reporter being able to just walk up to one of the twins and start talking to her. The twins and the President should know this and be more responsible

Posted by: heather | Nov 27, 2006 2:50:43 PM

It's a pity they don't have the same zeal for their father's war/invasion/occupation.

Posted by: William Justice | Nov 27, 2006 2:50:49 PM

Molly,

The article says it was the US Embassy not the Argentine government that asked the Bush twins to leave. Maybe the US ambassador is anti-American? lol

Posted by: dr__dawggy | Nov 27, 2006 2:51:01 PM

This is Another example of the Bush administration being run by everyone but President Bush.

Posted by: Chris Baker | Nov 27, 2006 2:51:24 PM

Just another example of the irresponsible press and other media which has ruined so many lives and cost others theirs.

When will a sense of decency come back to the press.

Posted by: John Jouett | Nov 27, 2006 2:51:52 PM

The U.S. EMBASSY asked the girls to leave because they are behaving in a manner that puts themselves in danger. It sounds as though they are acting irresponsibly even for an average U.S. citizen in a S.A. country, and they are the president's daughters (that means, they are in even more danger).

Posted by: Lisa | Nov 27, 2006 2:51:57 PM

Why aren't they serving in Iraq?

Posted by: Kevin | Nov 27, 2006 2:51:58 PM

The story should be focused on why it's apparently so difficult for the Secret Service to secure the twins. The sensationlistic press coverage is inane; what are two 25-year-old daughters of the president doing wrong in attending soccer matches, hitting the clubs and or being a victim of a purse snatching? Where is the story?

Posted by: Patrick Connole | Nov 27, 2006 2:51:58 PM

reading comprehension for the win.
IT WAS NOT the Argentine Government that asked them to leave
it was the US embassy.
in order to be informed you must be able to understand what you are talking about

Posted by: Warren | Nov 27, 2006 2:52:07 PM

The US embassy asked them to leave Molly, not the Argentine government. This fact is clearly stated in the headline.

Posted by: David B | Nov 27, 2006 2:52:21 PM

Fantastic! Always knew they were special but boca fans?!

Posted by: Ramses | Nov 27, 2006 2:52:21 PM

So why aren't the dear twins signing up for duty in Iraq? For their father's holy war to spread democracy around the Middle East. We're short of manpower there, and it'd be a great way to show the world that Bush and Cheney are absolutely right about how well things are going in Iraq.

Posted by: John Woods | Nov 27, 2006 2:52:23 PM

To the previous poster (Molly), please re-read the article. It was the US Embassy that asked them to leave, not the Argentine government. The request was made, ostensibly, for their safety, not for the collective safety of Argentina.

Posted by: Joe Hoff | Nov 27, 2006 2:52:27 PM

Molly: There's nothing in the article about the Argentinian gov't asking them to leave. It's the US Embassy in Argentina that wants them to go home.

Posted by: robbie | Nov 27, 2006 2:52:58 PM

Just more evidence of the Bush legacy of arrogance . . . the apples didn't fall far from the tree. "A real lady knows when it is time to leave a party. . . "

Posted by: Deb | Nov 27, 2006 2:53:37 PM

Molly, read the article.

"U.S. embassy officials "strongly suggested" President Bush's twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, cut short their trip to Buenos Aires".

As you can see, it was US Embassy officials and not the Argentine government that "strongly suggested" that the Bush twins leave.

Posted by: DallasNE | Nov 27, 2006 2:53:57 PM

Such odd behavior. You would think they were spoiled or something, but who would have thought . . .?

Dear Molly O'Neil,

The US Embassy suggested the girls leave early. Not the Argentine government. I think you had an Emily Latilla moment......next time read more carefully before OVER REACTING.

Posted by: Tarry Davis | Nov 27, 2006 2:56:20 PM

I applaud their moxie. Good for them! Let them enjoy their lives as any 25 year old girls would like to.

Posted by: Scott | Nov 27, 2006 2:56:22 PM

Let Them Play!
Let's get real. These girls just want to have fun. I believe the words are more like "experience the culture and savoring the local flavors..." versus "the Bush twins beam with pride over Argentine-U.S. relations...". An itinerary was well thought out and should be explored to its fullest, but maybe the girls can skip a trip to the shopper's bazaar or the latest fashion show/charity event. It's about that pesky paparrazzi and tabloids looking for the next "international incident," cataloguing every step and stop by these young ladies. Maybe the Argentine gov't can step up, provide a little more security and then sit back and enjoy the publicity about the Bush twins travel to the great country of Argentina. The US Embassy should shut up and back the girls and work with the local police and gov't.

Posted by: Tom | Nov 27, 2006 2:56:32 PM

It's about the potential for something stupid ... like a kidnapping by some terror type or political extremist looking for attention. The girls are adults but also appear a bit numb ... but that's not news is it.

Posted by: Al | Nov 27, 2006 2:56:36 PM

Molly - what article are you responding to? No where in THIS article does it say the Argentine government asked them to leave. It says the US Embassy in the headline. It says US Embassy in the body of the article.

So, you should be asking, the US Embassy thinks they're a security risk? What does the US Embassy think 2 young girls are going to do? Overthrow the government? Start a riot? Over reacting? Or Anti-American.

So, you think the US Embassy is Anti-American, huh?

See how YOU over reacted?

Posted by: Mike | Nov 27, 2006 2:56:51 PM

The bush twins were asked by U.S. Embassy officials to cut short their trip, not the Argentinian Government. I'm sure the Argentinian government doesn't mind the negative press generated by the Bush twins, since americans already have a bad rap in most of the world for its arrogance ... the Bush twins merely feed this view.

Sounds to me like the ambassador feels a little like they stole his thunder. It is a little disconcerting that a reporter was able to get that close without getting his arms and legs broken. But, why should they need to leave the country? Boy if they cloistered themselves in Washington you guys would accuse them of being small minded snobs. Cut them some slack....

Posted by: joe | Nov 27, 2006 2:58:36 PM

Hey, take it easy, Chelsea would have had the same problem, it's just no one wanted to party with her...

Posted by: Robert | Nov 27, 2006 2:58:46 PM

Are the Bush Twins serving our country in Argentina? Why they don't go to Iraq? Maybe partying in Argentina is the Bush equilivent of "serving our country".

Posted by: Jimmy | Nov 27, 2006 2:59:19 PM

I'm glad President Bush's daughters get to enjoy the night life and soccer in Argentina while our son's and daughters get to fight, suffer, get maimed, and die in Iraq because Saddam tried to kill President Bush's daddy. As the elder Barbara Bush said "You don't mess with the Bushs'."
They would be doing a much better service to our county by visiting our wounded at Army and V.A. Hospitals instead of living the life of royalty.

Posted by: Steve | Nov 27, 2006 2:59:34 PM

Uhh. . .Molly - maybe you need to read the story again. Just a wild guess but I'd say you might want to start at the first paragraph. . .but I could be wrong.

Toodles.

Chill! Have we all forgotten what it was like to be 25? Just because they are members of a well-known family doesn't mean they should be locked up in solitary till its "safe" to come out and play. My only thought was I know they are rich but don't these women have jobs?

Posted by: jaclyn | Nov 27, 2006 3:00:19 PM

lots of critical readers out there, eh. Here's one: "No Secret Service agents were anywhere to be seen in the lobby, according to ABC News' Joe Goldman." Lets all assume Joe Golman knows every secret service agent! Isn't that a bit like saying, "No air marshal was visible on the plane?" Kind of defeats the purpose if an idiot news reporter can ID them all doesn't it? Goes to show that as a result of little or no reading comprehension, people like Billie Bob and Dan can make far reaching conclusions about them watching a soccer game from the owners box...

Posted by: Mark | Nov 27, 2006 3:00:20 PM

It's sad how much attention the children of politicians get. Let them live their lives. It was bad enough that Chelsea Clinton had to go through puberty when her father was in office. Now these girls get looked down on for doing what any girls their age would do. Let them take their birthday vacation. They would be targets for a kidnapping even in the US.

Posted by: Anne | Nov 27, 2006 3:00:20 PM

Are you people serious? What are they doing that is so horrible? If anything we should be knocking the secret service for incompetence.

What is it about the Bush Dynasty, inviting themselves and refusing to leave?

Posted by: BJ | Nov 27, 2006 3:01:01 PM

While young men and women are in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting and putting their lives on the line, these two idiot-chips-off-the-old-block are making fools of themselves. They should be donating time in military hospitals rather than partying while their contemporaries are serving.

Posted by: Jay | Nov 27, 2006 3:01:26 PM

Maybe you reporter need to leave people alone sometimes. Was there any reason to print this articeal except to embaress our president. Were the girl rising hell or are they on a vacation like so meany other americans. Was anyone else ask to leave. I do care for most of our nes reporting any more it is to tiled.

Posted by: Charles | Nov 27, 2006 3:01:53 PM

I like their independence. No one had a problem with Chelsea Clinton's independence. Just because the Republicans screwed up, doesn't mean that the Bush girls have to submit to the gloating desires of others. Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes. How DARE the Bush girls travel the world and broaden their knowledge of other cultures. Isn't that what Dems say Bush lacked? A clear understand of other cultures? Yet they don't want the twins experience and grow as individuals. Are these people worried that one of the Bush daughters could be a much more effective elected official than their father?

Posted by: Tim | Nov 27, 2006 3:04:10 PM

Why should they have to leave? They are on vacation. Yes, it might be safer for them to leave, but we all make decisions about our safety daily and if it's more important for them to feel free to travel the world, then good for them.

This has nothing to do with their father. They are 25 years old.

Can we please stop judging people?

Posted by: B | Nov 27, 2006 3:04:26 PM

Posted by: Karen | Nov 27, 2006 3:04:53 PM

There is significant disklike for Bush and his policies within Argentina. The fact their presence is public is a threat to their security. I do not blame the US Embassy for asking them to leave. But they seem as stubborn and as ignorant as their father.

Posted by: Evo | Nov 27, 2006 3:05:02 PM

Some of these posts make me laugh. The girls are traveling and having fun. I wouldn't leave either. No one is being upstaged, the girls are on vacation and are having a good time. I give them props for staying and doing what they want. They are adults, capable of making adult decisions. If there is any harm, they are responsible and no one else. Let them be...

Well if the US Embassy in Argentina doesn't want the Bush girls to stay in country, they are welcome to come to Honduras and spend their money. Posted by: Lori | Nov 27, 2006 3:06:05 PM

If you read the article, it's UNITED STATES officials (from the embassy) who are asking them to leave early, NOT the Argentine officials. Let's get our facts straight before we start making Argentines (or, more acurrately, their government) the bad guys.

Posted by: FSB | Nov 27, 2006 3:06:11 PM

Posted by: B | Nov 27, 2006 3:06:19 PM

Security Risk in this case means they cannot guarantee the safety of the twins. The Argentine gov't trying to be helpful. Too bad our gov't and the twins refuse to reciprocate, but then again, that's W's devil-may-care attitude towards foreign nations.

Posted by: Underwhelmed | Nov 27, 2006 3:07:09 PM

MLW: Wild and unruly? Aside from an underage drinking incident (gee, what college student hasn't done this) give any other example of their wild and unruly behavior. Last I heard, they didn't have a DWI like Gore's son did. How about the behaviours of some of the Kennedy clan? The big story here is that the Secret Service is NOT doing their job. BTW, one of the Bush twins is a volunteer and the other works at an inner city school in Washington. What is Chelsea doing? Oh yea, making hundreds of thousands of dollars doing PR work. Good for her and good for the Bush twins as nome of them were ever elected to anything and are therefore not accountable to any of us. Your leftist hatred is so clear.

I suggest ALL you hyperventilators re-read the article. It mentions nothing of any misdeeds on the part of the girls themselves. They went to a popular club, they went to soccer matches, they sat around in the hotel lobby - one had a purse stolen. No information was presented to suggest the "wild" local tabloid stories were valid. If anyone should be called to account though, it should be the shoddy work of the Secret Service.
