Mayors' Request: Police Need More Access to Gun Ownership Records

January 23, 2007 1:07 PM

Fifty mayors gathered in Washington, D.C., Tuesday to demand the elimination of a law that restricts the ability of local police to trace ownership of guns used in crimes.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it was "ideological nonsense" to suggest the ability of police to trace criminals' weapons would infringe on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

The law, a temporary amendment, has been attached to House appropriations bills since 2003. Police officials say the law prevents them from investigating the connection of the gun to crimes other than the one in which the weapon was seized and from sharing the informaton with other cities.

The head of the American Hunters and Shooters Association, Ray Schoenke, said that gun rights "extremists," including the National Rifle Association, have taken positions that have "tarnished" the reputations of hunters and shooters.

The NRA tells its rural members that "guns purchased in their backyard and used in violent crime are not their problem," said Schoenke. He is the first gun rights advocate to join the mayors in their cause.

"Our coalition has refused to fall into the same old trap that this is an either-or issue, either respect the rights of gun owners or keep illegal guns out of the hands of criminals,"  Bloomberg said of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition.

In conjunction with the mayors' meeting, New York Democratic Congressman Charles Rangel, who is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, along with three other congressmen, announced a coalition in support of the mayors' legislative priority to eliminate the restrictions of the law.

Each year 30,000 people are killed by guns in the United States.

"Violent crime is again on the rise," said New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, "even in New York where overall the crime rate was down last year, we saw an increase in homicides and shootings."

This is just one more example of the blatant dishonesty of the liberal lobby. Who would rather blame an inanimate object then the failure of its ideology. Simply enforce the laws we have, increase personal accountability and STOP blaming INANIMATE objects.

"ideological nonsense" but some countries are doing this nonsense.

he does not see other example at all.
This is not good.

The head of the American Hunters and Shooters Association, a duck does not like you at least.

The NRA is selfish and does not care social criminal rate and incident at all.

Only want to have an adult toy , the gun is a tool to only kill or hurt, they don't see the point.

People have a right to not to be hurt and threaten by gun users.

Some countries are gunban and in those countries, gun criminal rate is almsot zero.
Americans have never understood this system, gunban to make safety.

Gunowners are really selfish and they don't see dangerous gun crime cases, they don't think what they are doing by their own ego.

I think a law about gun users have to strict.
Gun users hurt people should stay in jail over 30 years, no bail.

if gunuser killed people, they should be excuted!

Sooo...

JUST REMEMBER FOLKS THAT YOU ARE THE NEXT TARGET OF COMMUNISTS IF YOU SELL A GUN HONESTLY AND SOMEONE ELSE USES IT INCORRECTLY.

Deceitful polticians who desire to demonize anyone who dares to own or sell a gun.

Beware AMERICA! The Communists have arrived! They REFUSE to show in this story that over 2 Million lives are SAVED EACH YEAR BY THE PROPER USE OF GUNS IN AMERICA. Don't fall for this propaganda from mass media they keep pushing! If it is true that an average of 30,000 people die each year from PEOPLE who use guns then imagine the death toll if they succeed in taking them away once EVERYBODY IS REGISTERED WHO OWNS A GUN! 2 MILLION OR MORE MAYBE?

Notice that violent crime is up in cities where they pass laws to circimvent the second amendment!

Look out America! Take a stand. Don't let them demonize groups and people who adhere to the US Constitution.

Sincerely...

Recipient of Defender of the Constitution Award 2002.

Bloomberg ignores the fact that NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly publically said that releasing trace data would be bad as it could negatively affect legitimate law enforcement operations.

The American Hunters and Shooters Association misrepresents itself as representing gun owners, hunters, and the 2nd amendment. The president of the AHSA was previously the president of Stop Handgun Violence. You can't change a zebra's stripes. And don't believe the reports that countries such as England that outlawed guns have no gun crimes. The criminals always find ways to get armed. It's the good folks that get burned if the 2nd amendment is trashed.

Is it really true that 30,000 people in the U.S. die from gunfire each year? That would make the number around 120,000 in the U.S. since The beginning of the Iraq war, in which much less than 4,000 American soldiers, in battles daily, have been killed in Iraq. That, in my humble opinion, is major success in Iraq, and maybe if there were more responsible armed adults in the U.S., there wouldn't be as many predators on our shores.

Violent crime is on the rise, the NRA doesn't care who gets killed. 30,000 gun deaths in America, the highest in any civilized country, and guns SAVE lives? What a bent mentality. Rational gun laws are needed in this country, gun nuts ARE the problem. They defend anyone who kills with a gun or sells to a murderer. This mayors group is a small first step. Let's see some more sanity in our gun laws. The second amendment says IT clearly: WELL REGULATED.

Registration will eventually lead to confiscation. Keep your schemes to yourself and leave us law abiding citizens alone.

Posted by: darrell | Jan 25, 2007 12:50:23 AM

The Gun Banners always seem to overlook the NRA and Gun Owners main concern: Enforce existing laws, stop plea barganing with violent felons and finally - We WILL NOT give up the right to protect our families and ourselves. As much as the Police may try, typically they cannot, and are not leagally required, protect us.

Ask a Canadian if their gun crime has gone down since handguns were banned. The only folks ther who no whave them are criminals. You do the math.

Posted by: Howard | Jan 26, 2007 2:31:51 PM

To Chuck:

Let's be be very clear here. Left out were the most important 5 words of the 2nd amendment that defines who has the right to keep and bear arms, the same 5 words that are stated in the 1st amendment that defines who has the right to peaceable assemble and in the 4th amendment that defines who has the right to be secure: the right of the people. The 2nd amendment clearly states, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

For all you who believe, all be it in correctly, that banning guns stops gun crimes, here are the following statistics from Great Britian as Reported by the BBC.

"Gun crime has risen by 35% in a year, new Home Office figures show. There were 9,974 incidents involving firearms in the 12 months to April 2002 - a rise from 7,362 over the previous year. That represents an average of 27 offences involving firearms every day in England and Wales, with guns fired in nearly a quarter of cases. The new gun crime figures also show that handgun crime has soared past levels last seen before the Dunblane massacre of 1996 and the ban on the weapons that followed. The ban on ownership of handguns was introduced in 1997. It was hoped that the measure would reduce the number of handguns available to criminals. According to internal Home Office statistics, however, handgun crime is now at its highest since 1993."

You see, the catch to gun laws is it only applies to law abiding citizens. Criminals don't obey the law that is why they are criminals and couldn't care less if they break it. When you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns and John Q Public is left with no defense to protect his person our property. That is a criminals dream come true just like outlawing booze is a bootleggers dream.

If the liberal/PC crowd would follow your advice, we would have less gun toting criminals on the street. Then the "gun haters" could get off of the backs of the peaceful gun owners.

"Those willing to give up a little liberty for a little security deserve neither security nor liberty."

Ask the Darfuris how their imposed gun ban is working out for them.

As a Viet Nam disabled veteran, who defended his country, its just another hidden reason to make sheep out of all the american people. We have the right to own and defend ourselves. Now, they want to change it.We shall not give up having the means to fight, bar none.

Chuck, internally regulated, i.e., internally disciplined. You really should read some of the writings of those who wrote the Constitution and the BoR. You will quickly see that the intent of an armed populace is as a check on a (would-be) tyrannical government.

It's another of the checks and balances, only instead of it being one of the C&B existing between the three branches of government, it's a C&B between the government and its bosses: The citizens.

In the face of the Founding Fathers' desire for an armed citizenry to stand as a C&B against an overreaching government, the claim that "well regulated" allows the government to legislate that check against itself out of existence... is nonsensical.

In a similar way, they used "militia" to mean every citizen, NOT to mean the various states' National Guard units (which weren't to come into existence for many years), as some people claim.
