Football, Baseball Stars Linked to New Steroid Probe

February 27, 2007 2:58 PM

Steroids_raid_orlando_nrMajor league baseball players, football players and other athletes are at the heart of an investigation into an Internet-based performance-enhancing drug scam, allegedly linked to a Florida pharmacy which was raided today, federal law enforcement sources tell The Blotter on ABCNews.com.

Federal and state drug agents served warrants today on the Signature Pharmacy, in Orlando, Fla., as part of grand jury investigation in Albany, N.Y.

The raid was first reported in the Albany Times Union, which also said a series of arrests were being carried out in New York.

Federal Drug Enforcement agents told ABCNews.com the investigation involves the illicit sales of prescription drugs, including steroids and testosterone.

A number of current and former major league players who have been implicated in past federal steroid investigations are on the customer list for the pharmacy, which allegedly did $36 million in business last year, according to the Times Union newspaper.

The newspaper reported that a doctor connected to the Pittsburgh Steelers football team purchased more than $150,000 drugs through the pharmacy last year.

Dave Lockett, a spokesman for the team, said, "We are aware of the situation but don't have all the details or enough information to comment."

According to the Albany newspaper, the probe is expected to yield a customer list that extends well beyond professional football into professional baseball, bodybuilding and college sports.

Jason_grimsley_1The paper said that one of the players on the pharmacy's customer list was Jason Grimsley, a former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher who left baseball last year after federal agents raided his home as part of an investigation into mail-order steroids.  While Grimsley has not been charged with any crime, according to court papers, he has admitted using performance-enhancing drugs and has since been suspended for 50 games for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy.

A spokesperson for the Albany District Attorney would not discuss customers identified in the investigation but stated that the focus of the illegal drug prescription probe was taking down the producers, distributors and dealers.

So....Professional sports will stonewall this like they have in the past. We know, they know performance enhancing drugs are running rampant throughout pro & college sports. But doing major fines, suspensions or outright bans would cripple ticket sales and they can't have that. So a token or two sacrifices will surface along with another set of unenforceable rules for dealing with performance enhancing drugs and this will fall by the way side...again.

Steroids, as the common media calls it (testosterone, a steroid, is the correct word) have been used in athletics since it was first synthesized back in the 1950's. It was used fairly openly in sports until the 1980's when Congress made testosterone a controlled substance against the advice of both the AMA and DEA. Never mind that there were no real studies to support the politician's claims. The first big study on high dose testosterone appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1996, and like most of the studies since then, the danger claims cited by politicians and media were found to be overstated and misleading. The bottom line is they are in sports to stay, as are synthetic vaulting poles, specially designed running shoes and swimming speed suits. Congress just ins't staffed by bright enough people to realize their mistake and correct it, and put testosterone's use back in the hands of the health care professionals where it belongs.

While doing abdominal movements are well-connected to energize the muscle, they order not get rid of the nimiety fat on your stomach. The alone way to see your abdominal muscles is to cut your density fat share, since you light fat from within and not outdoor (the areas you hold the most fat force be the ultimately thrive you see changes). Incorporating cardiovascular training, denial training, and a robust food is the not way to downgrade your essence fat part and perhaps see the “six die” you’ve been hiding
