Musharraf Losing His Grip in Pakistan?
February 07, 2007 8:00 AM
The growing violence in Pakistan has raised concerns that President Pervez Musharraf is losing control of his country, a senior U.S. official tells ABC News.
The official said there are growing fears he could either be killed in an assassination attempt by the resurgent Taliban his country once fostered or be ousted in an Army coup of the kind that he led to seize power in 1999.
Tuesday's suicide bombing at the international airport in Rawalpindi follows a series of suicide attacks against government forces in northwestern Pakistan and a bombing on Jan. 29 at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.
THE BLOTTER RECOMMENDS
Pakistani intelligence officials tell ABC News they believe the attacks are in retaliation for government strikes against suspected Taliban and al Qaeda strongholds.
An estimated 40 people, including 17 Arabs or foreigners, were killed Jan. 17 in an air strike on a camp belonging to Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud. Mehsud, considered the Taliban leader closest to al Qaeda, warned there would be retaliatory attacks.

Pakistani and U.S. officials tell ABC News there are "credible" reports that at least 15 Taliban fighters were sent to Islamabad to carry out suicide missions. American citizens have been warned by the U.S. embassy in Islamabad to avoid public places.
Pakistani media have reported another major offensive is planned soon on Mehsud's operations, with several thousand troops moved into North and South Waziristan. Pakistani officials say they cannot confirm ongoing operations.

And what will we do when the fundamentalists (and no one is even *discussing* any other outcome) take over and own the working warheads?
Will we wait for AQ to blow us up real good? Kick off the draft and invade from the West while India invades from the East a la Germany in WWII?
Oh, wait, Hitler didn't have nukes, so an invasion won't work. What will The Decider decide?
We are hosed.

I really think we need to go in and clean up!! Use all the military power WE HAVE and level the place. Then ask for forgiveness later. Secondly, We know were the other strong holders are just go in and do the same thing there. Eventually they will get tired of being killed and give up or they will all be DEAD!! :)

I'm perplexed that "Dewey's" desire to 'level the place.' This blow-em-up mentality is a mirror reflection of Bush who has gotten us into this mess. Remember WMD's? Now it's 'get the terr-er-ists'? Give me a break already. War is not the answer.

The mess like Bush got us into? So you think hiding our heads in the sand and they will just go away and not want to kill us? Only one waqy to stop them and I agree take them all out and quit fighting a passive war on terror!

"I told them I would be the UNITER and I turned into the DIVIDER....Now I am the DECIDER but I will soon be seen as the DERIDER"...HEEHEEHEE GWB
The violence in movies, TV, and video games was well laid by those that know the self-fulfilling prophecy it will wreak means MORE MONEY...MORE MONEY...

('Antonia' This blow-em-up mentality is a mirror reflection of Bush who has gotten us into this mess.) All though the 1990's and beginning of 2000 we lived a passive World presence and look what happened we lost nearly 2900 people. If you want we can give the terrorist your address and sit back and watch what happens. Since we have gone into Afghanistan and Iraq there has NOT been a directed attack against the US. There have been numerous attempts but nothing that could not be stopped. The only way to fight the terrorist is to take it to them. I am fear of what will happen when a new President comes into office. I hope the New Commander in Chief will keep up the battle in there back yard and not on our soil because that is what will happen if we leave the Middle East. Also I know we are still not 100% protected at home but we are better then we were before.

The situation in iraq is perfect to foment the hatred that it was supposed to squash. nader was right when he said that juniors war was to show up daddy and at the same time get revenge for his supposed attempted assasintaion

Chris-- Is your head in the sand? Us being over in the Middle East is not formenting the hatred. Ignorance like that is what has got us in trouble and is continuing the trouble. Fanatical Islam goal is to rid the World of the infidels. Just like the Wacko Christains blowing up the abortions clinics. There are extremes in every Religion. What is scary is I do not think people realize the numbers we are talking about. In every Religion there are about 10% which go Fanatical. For the Religion of Islam they have over 1 Billion members which mean that there are over 100 million Fanatical members. That is almost 1/3 of the US population. So if my math is correct that means there are 100 million terrorist out there Now that concerns me (I am not sure about YOU) so if we can keep the battle in there back yard for now I am fine with that! I think OUR TROOPS are doing a GREAT and wish there hands were not tied by the Liberals and the Media!!!

Dewey -
You had a good point until you stated 10% of all religions go fanatical. Not sure whose backside you pulled that number from. And our troops hands werent tied by liberals and the media, they were tied by Iraqi politics and Bushs unwillingness (until just recently) to force the Iraqi's to deal with the situation fairly without political interference. Bush's screw-ups are another ball of wax.

Dewey, you kill me...not literally of course! Although I guess if I was a "fanatical" Muslim, you probably would.
Your fear of the rest of the world coming to destroy us doesn't surprise me. It tells me that you know N..O..T..H..I..N..G about the rest of the world. No one is going to argue that there are not terrorists who want to destroy anyone (which includes this country) who disagrees with their world perspective. But why you think YOUR world perspective is any better (let's go "level the place") makes me sick. You would cut off your nose to spite your face or, in this case, destroy all humans in an area (innocent or not) just to "get them". Everything is either black or white with you. How pathetic...
I'm not even going to debate with you about our "passive" attitude of the 90's, nor who can carry a bigger warhead. You and the other bozos with the "My god, a terrorist is everywhere" attitude need to take a deep breath and learn something about the WORLD you live in and not just the COUNTRY you live in.

Bush is an idiot. But what's worse is he doesn't listen to the experts or learn from his mistakes. Iraq never made sense. Iran made a lot more sense. Now, because of Dumbya we will end up with two Irans to deal with. God help us all.
