NFL Refuses to Run Ad to Recruit Border Agents

February 13, 2007 4:06 PM

Super_bowl_program_nr The National Football League refused to include a print ad recruiting U.S. Border Patrol agents in its 2007 official Super Bowl program because they were uncomfortable with "the sensitive political nature" of the spot, according to a league spokesman.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees the Border Patrol, had offered to pay for the advertisment, which was part of a campaign to boost the number of agents by 18,000. But money wasn't the issue, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told ABC News.

The ad "was specific to border patrol and mentioned terro rists," he said. "The game was in Miami, where [immigration] is a sensitive political issue...[it] made us a little bit uncomfortable."

Aiello said the league's discomfort stemmed from the ad's mention of terrorism in a program for the high-profile event as well as how it intertwined terrorism and immigration.

The league told DHS it would be willing to run a more generic recruiting ad but never received a response to the offer.  "We take recruiting ads from the military that are generic," said Aiello. "We were willing to take one from DHS."

The issue came to the attention of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who raised it before Congress last week. "We tried to put an ad in the...Super Bowl program this year, and it was rejected, much to my chagrin," he told a panel of lawmakers.

DHS spokesman Mike Friel said he could not confirm the NFL had offered to take a "more generic" ad. He said that other organizations had accepted the same ad the NFL rejected, including the NBA, which ran the advertisement in its official program for its annual All-Star Game, the NCAA, which will publish it in programs for its Final Four championship tournament and "Pro BullRider" magazine.

The ad the NFL didn't want you to see...

I wonder does the NFL also refuse any of the free forms of security it is provided by various federal (and local) agencies too. I think any kind of free security for NFL games should stop immediately.

To Steve: Murder? The drug-runner that they shot in the butt survived and even testified against them, gaining immunity from his own crimes of bringing drugs into the country for sale. The agents need to be punished - but why is their sentence 5 times greater than these crazy women that kill their own babies? No justice here.

WHO EMPLOYS ALL THESE ILLEGALS? HOW DO THEY SURVIVE? OH THATS WHY CRIME IS ON THE RISE, BUT THEY ARE BEING EMPLOYED BY ALL THE BUILDERS BUILDING HOUSES, BY ALL LANDSCAPERS BUILDING NEW SUBDIVISIONS. MAYBE WE SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT HOW WE AS A SOCIETY SUPPORT THESE ILLEGALS.

Way to go NFL!!! You can't support your country, I can't support you!!!
Don't watch
Don't buy

Steve wrote....
"The truth behind the border agents who shot two traffickers dead is that they were unarmed, posed no risk to the agents themselves, the agents had commented just prior to the incident that they wanted to kill some immigrants, and the agents then tried to cover it up by omitting it from their report. It was murder."

Steve, you're an idiot. This did NOT happen the way you describe it. What TWO traffickers were murdered by Ramos & Compean? As well, the story that they publicly stated that they wanted to "kill some Mexicans" has already been exposed as a fraud - the person (another BP Agent) who reported hearing them say this has recanted and is facing disciplinary action for lying to investigators.

After what DOJ and Homeland Security did to Ramos and Compean, I would not recommend anyone to work as a BPA. They are not authorized by their superiors to do their job and will probably be passing out water bottles and cell phones to drug runners, smugglers, and coyotes.

Sorry to sound so negative, but, the left wing wackos have taken the law enforcement duties away from Border Patrol Agents.

The President want amnesty and open borders. Carl Rove does not want his children working in any manual labor jobs. Our republicans have turned into elitists along with the DNC.

Welcome to donkey land.

In response to Tammy above:

Get your facts straight Tammy. The agents that are in jail right now DID NOT KILL ANYONE. If you think that criminals crossing our borders pose no threat then you can go live with them and get out of my country.

NFL has been trying to get a team in Mexico for a while. Putting that kind of ad would have slammed the door shut on that possibility. Nice job NFL. I've been a Bear fan for 22 years, spent thousands of dollars on merchandise, games, etc. but after this the NFL will get $0 from me and my family.
They made a statement to everyone where their priorities lie and it isn't with the interests of the US citizen.
It's ok to show the offensive Sniker's commercial but military recruitment ads are not allowed! Traitors!

What as surprise!? It's typical.

Posted by: Jeff | Feb 13, 2007 4:30:27 PM

Steve! are you ignorant? Those agents didn't kill anyone, only one dope trafficker got shot in the butt, after struggling with the officer and then trying to get away. And...His supervising officer at the scene said not to make a report. Why don't you look up all the current reports, there's more to this than you even think.

obviously, none of you have any business sense. nor is our government run any different than what the nfl based its decision on. really, this is like that game telephone. not one post ive read to this article made any sense at all. bottom line, if you own a business you are not going to support ads that offend in the way the bpa ad did which IS NOT the same as the snickers ad, and if your panties werent in such a tight bunch, you might have found the snickers ad funny like i did. get a clue, would ya?

Wow, the level of knee-jerk incompetence is so blindingly stupid that I can only shake my head and wonder.

This admin is corrupt and association with it is bad business - no brainer.

To the Bears' fan - you're full of it. You'll still shell out the merch money so stop lying.

The Snickers commercial was funny, and I'm fighting homophobe idiots in small town Texas. I just know funny without someone having to tell me.

Most Americans are so dumb their lips move while reading streets signs. Didn't use to be that way.

Shame.

Side topic; The NFL is full of whiny babies that break the law & make millions in reward for bad behavior. What's more important; your childrens' education or a bunch of egotists playing a GAME? Wake me when the revolution's here. America sucks.

Posted by: Lana | Feb 13, 2007 6:49:49 PM

Why is this even news? Who care's if they didn't run an ad? They even claimed they would run one that wasn't so politically sensitive in that region. It isn't like they told the DHS to screw off, and claimed to love illigal immigration.

the NFL won't help recruit people to protect our borders, but it will allow a has-been pipsqueak to make phallic shadow puppets during the halftime show. this in between million dollar commercials foisting alcohol on our young people. i weep for the country my son will inherit.

I'm disgusted by the NFL's decision not to run the Border Patrol ad. National security should trump upsetting folks in Miami.

Posted by: Phil | Feb 14, 2007 12:31:43 PM

I will never watch another NFL game for the rest of my life. This way, by the time a criminal record is required, rather than just a desired qualification for the players, my family won't even remember that there is such a thing as the NFL.

Fortunately, I live in a mild climate, so I will be spending my Sundays on the golf course rather than supporting the NFL with any of my time or money.

The NFL had over 35 players arrested in 2006, for drugs and alcohol, spousal abuse, and weapon charges, yet they won't run an add because it made them uncomfortable, Maybe they ought to move their whole organization elsewhere. If it was 60 years ago the head of the NFL would be arrested for sedition.

I SHOUT - shame on the NFL for not having the guts to run an ad for the boarder patrol this past super Bowl because the ad "was specific to border patrol and mentioned the word terrorists,” this Master Chief, United States Navy, (Ret). urges everyone to treat the NFL with the contempt it so richly deserves – turn the NFL off this coming season just like the NFL turned off the request by Home Land Security to run an ad that dare mention the word TERRORISTS... β€œThe issue came to the attention of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who raised it before Congress last week.” We tried to put an ad in the...Super Bowl program this year, and it was rejected, much to my chagrin," he told a panel of lawmakers. Just in case football fans are unaware, the NFL intends to start playing football in Mexico in the near future. I would like to know how individual NFL players fee about this? Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said that other organizations had accepted the same ad the NFL rejected, including the NBA, which ran the advertisement in its official program for its annual All-Star Game, the NCAA, which will publish it in programs for its Final Four championship tournament and "Pro BullRider" magazine.SCREW THE NFL.

The ad was in English... half of Miami probably could not have read it.
